Would you give me the replacement chips?

Im with a group of mum friends at a food court. We all go off to different kiosks. Order our food. We find an available table.

I order from a Thai cuisine, a noodle dish and some chips for the little one.

I pick up the food, put toddler in highchair, put the chips infront of her. I’m about to take my first serving of noodles and baby kicks the chips all over the floor.

The chips cost £5. One of the mums says that it’s been less than 5 mins and they didn’t touch the chips, I should be able to ask for a replacement.

So I go to the kiosk, politely explain that I was just here and the baby annoyingly dropped all the chips. I show them the picture (we are sitting on the other end of the food court).

They say no. But I plead a little bit - I do have a soft voice so I’m being nice. Then they go on and on about how every mum will be asking for freebies. I should pay for another one. And I should go to another one of their stores who would provide me free chips.

Turns out she was also the manager.

I worked in waitressing many years ago, and honestly, we would have just given a portion of chips. Id be hesitant if it was the whole meal - but a couple of chips for a baby?

Was I being unreasonable?

Why would it be their responsibility more than it is yours? You’re the parent!

DalmationalAnthem · 15/05/2026 19:01

This is so embarrassing to read. You were pleading for free food to the point where you asked for a manager?

Schrödingers chips which are simultaneously a £5 portion and also a couple of chips for a baby.

AnneLovesGilbert · 15/05/2026 19:01

What happened next though? Did you buy more chips? Share the noodles? Go to the local paper? I need to know please.

Uptightmumma · 15/05/2026 19:01

If you had gone over and ordered chips you probably would have got them for free instead of being a CF

Thingsthatgo · 15/05/2026 19:01

I think you deserved them ‘going on and on’ for pleading after they said no.
In future it is always a good idea to give baby little and often - that way they don’t get overwhelmed by the quantity, and you avoid the situation where they dump all their food in one go.

Error404FucksNotFound · 15/05/2026 19:03

No. I would not have given you a free replacement.
It was ridiculous of you to even ask and as for going on about it,

Happyjoe · 15/05/2026 19:03

It would've been nice - but of course don't have to. Your baby am afraid, your chips. They may have had some sympathy had they seen it happen but I think you were wrong to ask, I'd never be that cheeky, lol.

Sometimes people are kind though, once dropped entire Chinese takeaway outside the shop I just bought it from. The owner came running out, helped me clean up and cooked me another order for free, refusing to let me pay. Hassocks takeaway, you were ace!

Mumandcarer80 · 15/05/2026 19:04

I wouldn’t expect a free replacement unless it was staff at fault. My dd was trying to cut up some gammon once the plate went flying chips gammon and pineapple all over the floor. I picked it all up put back on the plate and ordered her another one. Lesson learnt to keep a closer eye on her. When the other meal came she actually let me cut her gammon up.😂😂😂

Oh look, another rage bait thread by a non returning op.

...time for Gin!

Peakyblinder18 · 15/05/2026 19:04

@Houseofdrums did you buy another bowl?

7238SM · 15/05/2026 19:04

This is clearly a reverse from the shop manager about the CF customer!

Spiffingdarling88 · 15/05/2026 19:05

Why didn't you just do 5 second rule?

Krevlornswath · 15/05/2026 19:06

Yes, very cheeky - why on earth would they replace this, there is no fault on their part and nothing wrong with the food they prepared.

Do you think being a mum makes some sort of difference in this case? curious to know why, if so.

Canonlythinkofthisone · 15/05/2026 19:06

Lol
Bye OP

likelysuspect · 15/05/2026 19:07

You're even unreasonable to ask the question

You dont honestly think you're entitled to replacement chips do you?

Oh right, that makes more sense

Spiffingdarling88 · 15/05/2026 19:05

Why didn't you just do 5 second rule?

I would at home, but not in a food court!

74username52 · 15/05/2026 19:09

A bany eating chips..? Only in the UK.

StephensLass1977 · 15/05/2026 19:10

Technically cheeky BUT I'm sure this was a lot more common in the 80s and 90s when I was a kid. I seem to remember if a child dropped a drink etc in a restaurant, it would be replaced.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 15/05/2026 19:11

If you were in a cafe or restaurant where everyone was eating they might have done it as a gesture of goodwill but not in this case. Why did you put all the chips out in one go? I’d always put one or two out at a time to avoid this happening.

SnappyUmberLion · 15/05/2026 19:11

You are being entitled and very unreasonable. And your friend is talking rubbish.

Spiffingdarling88 · 15/05/2026 19:11

DoYouLikeYourNaneFred · 15/05/2026 19:08

Im joking, I think its cheeky to ask.

PeachySmile2 · 15/05/2026 19:13

Why should they foot the bill because your child kicked the chips all over the floor? Are they the child’s mother? No, you are, so you pay to replace
them.

Harriet36 · 15/05/2026 19:13

Unbelievable!
I would be mortified by you if you were having lunch with me and my DC.

Frikkinperiod · 15/05/2026 19:13

HawkersWest · 15/05/2026 18:29

I agree with everyone. I'm not sure why you'd think you would be entitled to a free replacement. 🤔

Because she's entitled?
