Would you give me the replacement chips?

Im with a group of mum friends at a food court. We all go off to different kiosks. Order our food. We find an available table.

I order from a Thai cuisine, a noodle dish and some chips for the little one.

I pick up the food, put toddler in highchair, put the chips infront of her. I’m about to take my first serving of noodles and baby kicks the chips all over the floor.

The chips cost £5. One of the mums says that it’s been less than 5 mins and they didn’t touch the chips, I should be able to ask for a replacement.

So I go to the kiosk, politely explain that I was just here and the baby annoyingly dropped all the chips. I show them the picture (we are sitting on the other end of the food court).

They say no. But I plead a little bit - I do have a soft voice so I’m being nice. Then they go on and on about how every mum will be asking for freebies. I should pay for another one. And I should go to another one of their stores who would provide me free chips.

Turns out she was also the manager.

I worked in waitressing many years ago, and honestly, we would have just given a portion of chips. Id be hesitant if it was the whole meal - but a couple of chips for a baby?

Was I being unreasonable?

Team shop assistant here. Why didn't you just buy more? It was your stuff up. And stop saying baby - 2 year olds are toddlers. Entitlement central

Molly2135 · 16/05/2026 06:16

I live about a 3 minute walk from my nearest Sainsburys.. If I went shopping and dropped a 2 pint milk bottle and it went everywhere shall I walk back and ask for a replacement 🙄? as it’s been under 5 minutes!! The audacity of done people 🤦🏼‍♀️

Fair enough.

I would have never spoken to a customer the way she did.

Good for you OP - I hope you got this awful woman fired for your incompetence...

If you had bought a sandwich from m&s to eat on a park bench and dropped it, would you go back to m&s and expect to get another one for free? It's your fault a whole portion of chips fell on the floor, you should have given the baby a few at a time (or packed a more suitable lunch that didn't cost £5!). The vendor shouldn't suffer your foolishness. Serious CF. And what's with the other mum's odd reasoning?? Bunch of entitled fools.

@Houseofdrums would

Owly11 · 16/05/2026 06:53

Sorry, why should they give you a second portion of chips for free? I thought you were going to say your friend said they had been on the floor for less than 5 seconds and so were perfectly edible. That would have been a much more sensible answer. No sorry you pay for your own mistakes and it is a terrible attitude to expect others to pay for your mistakes.

What a nauseating post. YABVVVU

Cakeandcardio · 16/05/2026 07:01

Cannot believe you a) asked for free chips and b) asked on this forum whether they were wrong to deny you chips.

Maybe reflect on when you became so entitled.

I think once you’ve walked away from the counter it’s too late. If you literally dropped them in front of the server then I think they might (but would not be obliged) to offer a replacement. I wouldn’t even think of asking once I’d walked away and found a table.

Agreed. OP didn’t drop them on their property.

These kiosks pay high rent, they don’t owe favours.

Here in Scotland we take our plates o chips very seriously. I was in a cafe in Arran once and the portion of chips my kid received with his scampi was undersized. I knew this had to be an error because what kind of animals would serve a shite plate o chips? I asked the waitress if she could get him more and she did not hesitate, rushing back with a massive plate and sincere apologies.

Little Rock cafe, you are Scotland's finest!

I think I’m taking this as a recommendation for my upcoming trip to Arran! Any other tips?

Yabu. Why should they give you free chips. I'm shocked a baby, a child under 1 is eating chips anyway.

QueenOfThorns · 16/05/2026 07:33

Brown rice and spinach stew 😂

OR chips! 😆

ZenNudist · 16/05/2026 07:35

Don't ask don't get. It's only chips and for a child. Profit margin is high on them. The goodwill of a returning customer or recommendation on Google is worth more.

My child dropped their Fanta bottle at the theatre as soon as they got it. It exploded everywhere. It was expensive. I turned around and asked for another one. It was my childs fault it burst. I had my purse out to pay and the bar staff checked with the manager and gave me one for free without me having to ask (with 4 proseccos I'd paid for!). Shout out to the Palace Manchester!

sofreaaa · 16/05/2026 07:36

You begged for food for your toddler in a food hall. Poor toddler, poor judgement.

And £5 for chips?

WTH

Sartre · 16/05/2026 07:36

Can you imagine asking an ice cream man for a new one because your child dropped it? Why would you have the cheek to do this?

user1481216133 · 16/05/2026 07:41

Not unreasonable at all. Goodwill goes a long way and I think that’s what’s missing with everything these days.
Same as if a kid dropped their ice cream right in front of the ice cream van. It should be replaced. It never is, but it should be.

I think you were rude and entitled to expect more chips. As others have said it's a food hall not a restaurant. You could have easily dropped the food carrying it to the table. Would you then have wanted more chips?!
It sounds like you put on a baby voice, possibly turned on the water works and were still told no and you didn't like it.
While you may have got your refund they probably were eye rolling you and said all the comments that have been made on here about your entitlement.

Also to clarify, is it a baby you had with you or a toddler? As you keep mentioning the baby but then said they are 2. Maybe they threw the chips for a laugh. Not the fault of the food hall.
Perhaps you should take snacks in the future to avoid such scenarios and if your child is so hungry go home after the activity.

Heylittlesongbird · 16/05/2026 07:41

Please can we have the brown rice and spinach stew recipe?

I think the difference here is you were ready to pay - I’ve had this scenario where I’ve dropped food/ drink etc and been ready to pay and then had the restaurant/ cafe cover it anyway. However going in straight away expecting it for free usually gets people’s backs up
