To think paying £102 to change to a “better” mobile number isn’t completely ridiculous?

Long story short, I’ve had my current number for years and there’s a bit of emotional baggage attached to it now due to family boundary issues / people having access to it who I don’t really want having access anymore (posted about the situation a few days ago).

I’d already been considering changing it, but every replacement number EE offered me felt worse than my current one, so I kept saying no.

Today they offered me a “gold/VIP” number with triple 7s in it that I genuinely really like and would actually prefer to my current number. Problem is, it costs £102.

I know logically it’s “just a phone number” but equally people keep numbers for years and years, and if I’m going to go through the faff of changing it, I almost feel like I’d rather do it properly and actually like the new number.

Part of me thinks “life’s short, just get the number you want.”

Another part thinks “£102 for digits is objectively insane.”

You are being scammed

Well, who even knew that this was a thing? I think mine would actually qualify as a VIP number, but it's just one assigned to me by BT Cellnet in about 2001! I do also have an email address that is just my name, no numbers etc like [email protected] (not that!) It pays to be nearly 50!

I signed up early for a @google.com address and was also able to get my name with no numbers. Which also works with a dot between the first name and the second name and with the gmail.com ending.

Zerosleep · 16/05/2026 19:04

The most important thing is can you afford it. If you can and it gives you peace of mind then just do it.

Laura95167 · 16/05/2026 19:05

So i understand changing it. And keeping your peace.

I think paying for a specific number is nuts but I spend money on stuff others would consider nuts so if you want this triple 7 get it

KitsyWitsy · 16/05/2026 19:34

if you want it, get it. Do what you want. I wouldn’t but I bet I spend money on stuff other people wouldn’t. We’re all different x

Ottersideofthebridge · 16/05/2026 19:50

I've had my mobile number donkey's years, actually sat on the floor in Tesco going through a mound of sim cards in order to pick a nice number. The number has a pattern and lots of zeros, I'm actually quite attached to it, it gets commented on, I'd pay to keep it.
We had to get a new house phone number last year, it's a random jumble and will just not stick in my mind, it can be nice just to have an easy number.

Leavesandthings · 16/05/2026 20:10

I don't think it's insane. I've always had quite a good one ("double X double X double X")
I could understand being a bit meh about a random list of numbers.
Spend the money if you want, there is no guilt attached.
It only affects you as you are the one who needs to ever say it aloud or type it, and maybe for the next thirty years.

CDTC · 16/05/2026 20:56

While I wouldn't spend money on a phone number I have just spent £103 on a family meal out so yeah, if you want it and it'll make you happy just get it. People spend money on all sorts, it doesn't really matter if anyone else would spend theirs on a number or not if you want to.

mumatlast14 · 16/05/2026 21:14

How will you feel about the new number if the people you want to avoid get hold of it?

JayJayj · 16/05/2026 21:21

Do I think it’s a lot of money? Yes!

BUT if it is going to help you and ease some anxiety then it’s 100% worth it.

Libertoo · 16/05/2026 21:58

Arlanymor · 15/05/2026 12:56

I don't understand why all of the other numbers feel worse to you? They're just numbers. You want to get rid of your current one so that people from the past cannot contact you - fine. But why are 'all' of the replacements offered worse? I don't understand that? I think VIP numbers are like vanity registration plates - if you have the cash and want to spend the money on it then fair enough, do what you like. I can think of better things to spend £100 on however.

Edited to add this disclaimer - unless the phone number or the reg plate relates to a business, that makes a lot more sense as it's brand building and memorable.

Edited

There are worse numbers when they don’t have good cadence or flow or memorability.

Bettermuseli · 16/05/2026 22:03

Some numbers are more memorable and back in the day that was an advantage, but now people rarely memorise them. But if it makes you happy to choose a number, why not.

I had a number that ended in 666 years ago and I loved it, was sad when I moved network and didn't realise I could transfer it. So I say get it!

A close friend has a phone number ending 666, she's with EE.🫣

sunshinestar1986 · 16/05/2026 22:32

Gosh just get it
Its not a 1000

2children3dogs · 16/05/2026 23:05

ThatJadeFawn · 15/05/2026 13:08

It’s basically a number with a memorable/repetitive pattern in it (like repeated digits etc.) that networks classify as a “gold” or “VIP” number and charge extra for (there are even platinum numbers that people pay £1k/£2k/£3k for). Most replacement numbers they offered me were random and honestly worse than my current number but this one was the first one that actually felt like an upgrade rather than just different.

Wow I wonder what my number is worth- it has 6 of the same digit in a row eg 07X111111XX

If it gives you peace of mind, do it. People waste money on far worse things.

Going Live would disagree with you. As would most music teachers. Anything can have good cadence. Memorability is a non-argument as different things have more or less memorability according to different people.

SevenYellowHammers · 17/05/2026 15:15

I learn phone numbers by pairing them and attaching memories to the years so 97 Tony Blair got in, 77 Star Wars, 66 we won the World Cup and so on (discount the first 0) . My dyslexic brain would be confused by multiple repeated numbers like loads of 7s or whatever. I definitely don’t think you should waste 100 quid on a number. I don’t get personalised number plates either. What a waste of money!

HiEarthlings · 17/05/2026 16:11

JacquesHarlow · 15/05/2026 12:57

Also, the weird bit for me is, how many people actually "remember" friend's mobile numbers these days?

You just put the number in once and forget it? It's not like the days where we had to memorise people's landlines or else take a small book of numbers with us?

YABU

Exactly this! I've been with my partner for 16 years and wouldn't be able to tell you her number. I put it in my phonebook at the start and now simply click her name when I want to call her. I just asked my daughter and granddaughter how many of their family/friends numbers they know, and they both said, "none of them".

A number is a number is a number....

Who doesn't love a weirdo friend?...so my friends tell me...although they said they drew the line at me saying i wanted a Georgian mourning ring with hair in it from the 1700s 🤭🫣

I have a Victorian DARLING ring - no hair, but gems to spell out the message. I wish this stuff hadn't fallen out of fashion to be honest! I'm also cool with hair - we have a family bible (goodness knows why, the biggest heathens on the planet!) that goes back to about 1816 and next to everyone's name... is a lock of hair! It's quite lovely really and not remotely creepy.

Oohhhhh is that the ring with emerald, ruby, garnet, sapphire and so on? If so my gran had a more modern style version. You need to still wear this!.

Ohhh that bible sounds very fascinating, id love to see this 🥰.

My dad has a folder with all the families death certificates (on his side) that goes back to the 1800s, i have asked him to make sure I get this when the time comes as id love to look back into the history.

Greengage1983 · 19/05/2026 11:08

It is objectively insane. I feel like this is the sort of thing where, if you were to force yourself to wait 3 months, you would no longer want it. No one notices other people's phone numbers. Perhaps if you had a business, it might pay to have a more memorable number, but otherwise it's madness. If you've got the money to spare, go and spend it on something you'd actually enjoy.
