To hide all the current political threads?

PeakSheep · Yesterday 08:41

They are just a magnet for all the same posters competing to drive stakes through every British political party.

I've hidden every single one and feel so much better!

YABU: you should get involved in all the frothing discourse and attempt to prove your point at any opportunity

YANBU: hide them, leave them to it, they clearly have an agenda and it's not worth getting involved

Of course you're not as it's down to personal choice but why do you feel the need to post about it?

TenderChicken · Yesterday 08:43

It's not unusual to disengage from politics, not sure you need a whole "look at me" post about it.

Blundl · Yesterday 08:44

I think the whole thing is going to get on my nerves, whether on here or on the TV, it's going to be relentless for about the next 6 months so YANBU

PuttyTat · Yesterday 08:45

Nope, I hide all political threads, too.

PeakSheep · Yesterday 08:48

@Needtosoundoffandbreathe @TenderChicken

I am posting because I am interested in how many other people feel the same as me.

I am not disengaging from politics in real life, just online, as it seems to be full of people with endless time to argue the same points over and over.
I am so sick of reading the phrase 'two cheeks of the same arse' for example.

So I have blocked all.

It feels good.

Fair enough.

It's hard to know what bias we are being presented with anyway. It feels constant.

Well if you hide everything then you will have no basis upon which to form an opinion of your own will you? Own goal.

And don't complain when the result leads to a worse life for you or people you care for.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · Yesterday 08:59

If you don't want to engage in conversations about how our country is governed, then that's entirely your prerogative. However, like a pp, I find myself wondering why you might feel the need to announce this to the world, or indeed why you would need to know whether there are other people who are as disengaged as you are. Why would that matter?

As for people who are politically engaged and contributing to the political threads "having an agenda" - well yes, of course, that's kind of inevitable in any political discussion because it's about what people want for the future of the country and people will have opinions. There will be some agendas that you might agree with and others which you might disagree with, unless you have no opinions at all, but there is nothing inherently wrong with people having particular views about how the country should be governed.

If you don't find the threads interesting, then by all means, hide them.

Chemenger · Yesterday 09:01

I’ve done this too. I’m not disengaged from politics but most political threads on here are so polarised that they don’t help me get a grip on things.

Same here. It’s a shit show now with a useless bunch and always will be.

Because feeling bombarded by high emotion feels chaotic and unsettling to some.

Our nervous system isn't meant to be on high alert at all times.

I don't see anything wrong with being selective about what information you are exposed to, when and how.

I think that's healthy emotional regulation.

Yes, like I said, it's your choice as to whether or not you engage.

That doesn't mean that others are wrong if they make a different choice.

The threads are available for those who want to discuss stuff. There are plenty of other threads available for people who want to talk about other things.

Did someone suggest that political threads were wrong, though? Did I miss that statement?

I don't think I read through the original description of the threads by the OP.

Apologies!

You can't form a rounded opinion based on the political threads on mumsnet!

They are dominated by the same posters!

I get my opinion based on what I see happening in real life around me with my own eyes.

The OP's tone certainly implies some criticism. And she is, of course, free to post whatever she likes. Equally, though, others are free to respond.

ETA Cross posted, sorry.

No I'm not criticising. I just find them very domineered by the same people and the same arguments and phrases over and over, so I have decided to opt out.

I’m finding current politics fascinating. We have an unprecedented situation unfolding in our country. I’d far rather read about politics than some of the absolute drivel you get on Mumsnet.

Inevitably the threads will be dominated by the same posters if other posters like you choose not to contribute. I mean, it would be great to see a wider range of posters sharing their ideas and insights, but if they choose not to engage, then there isn't much that anyone can do.

CurlewKate · Yesterday 09:17

Do whatever you want. You are under no obligation to care what happens to your country.

Do whatever you like but just recognise that basing everything 'on your own eyes' is a very narrow way to view the world.
