To hide all the current political threads?

They are just a magnet for all the same posters competing to drive stakes through every British political party.

I've hidden every single one and feel so much better!

YABU: you should get involved in all the frothing discourse and attempt to prove your point at any opportunity

YANBU: hide them, leave them to it, they clearly have an agenda and it's not worth getting involved

Do whatever you want. You are under no obligation to care what happens to your country.

I care immensely.

Do whatever you like but just recognise that basing everything 'on your own eyes' is a very narrow way to view the world.

It's less narrow than believing the well funded bias that is thrown at us daily on social media and the news.

Inevitably the threads will be dominated by the same posters if other posters like you choose not to contribute. I mean, it would be great to see a wider range of posters sharing their ideas and insights, but if they choose not to engage, then there isn't much that anyone can do.

It's too exhausting. Those with an agenda also seem to have endless time to shout the loudest.

I would contribute more if it was less of a pile on constantly.

It matters. When I was growing up you had a lot of young women who felt it was almost fashionable to say ‘ i don’t really know much about politics’.
But then would know all about prices of holidays, clothes, houses, you name it. All of which is governed by politics. And impacts on your day to day life.

luckylavender · 15/05/2026 09:47

You just started a new one 🤔

Hmm, mixed feelings about this. I remember spending a huge amount of time following things online during all the Brexit problems in parliament- anyone remember the indicative votes, the Malthouse compromise etc etc?- I followed it all in real time, posted earnestly about it to other people posting earnestly about it etc etc, and what did it achieve? Obviously fuck all except making me feel stressed and powerless.

I think being engaged with politics online gives you a false sense that you are doing something but you aren't really- at best you're just killing time by explaining your views to people who already agree with you, and you may be actively making things worse by contributing to a dialogue that just makes people more polarised and angry.

These days I follow events by watching the news and reading the paper and I support causes I believe in in the real world with my money and time. Happily steer well clear of 99% of politics threads on places like this. That is absolutely nothing to do with not caring about the country, quite the reverse.

CurlewKate · 15/05/2026 10:02

Political threads would definitely be improved by people not confusing being disagreed with with being bullied, or being piled on.

If people care deeply about something, then they may well make more time to post about it.

It's up to you to decide how much you contribute, or if you contribute at all. Likewise, it's up to other posters to decide how much they want to engage - and if that means posting a lot, then there is nothing to stop them from doing so.

Theolittle · 15/05/2026 10:13

I don’t blame you. I’m interested but it doesn’t make me happy to read some opinions from others that I think are deluded, entitled, unfair, unkind, unreasonable. We blame politicians for the state of the UK but I blame the British people for their lack of understanding and ridiculous expectations in the face of extremely difficult challenges.

i have to keep reminding myself that we are incredibly lucky to be born in this country, despite what many seem to think!

Sorry I got a bit political there which is what you don’t want to read 😂

@Needtosoundoffandbreathe @TenderChicken

I am posting because I am interested in how many other people feel the same as me.

I am not disengaging from politics in real life, just online, as it seems to be full of people with endless time to argue the same points over and over.
I am so sick of reading the phrase 'two cheeks of the same arse' for example.

So I have blocked all.

It feels good.

Where do you get your ‘debate’ from, out of interest?
The danger with ignoring this stuff is ending up in an echo chamber. If you are ensuring that doesn’t happen, YANBU.
If you prefer an echo chamber existence, YABU. We all need to engage and listen to others with differing views.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 15/05/2026 11:12

I still fail to see the need to post about it. It's obvious which threads are political from the titles. So just don't open them. Don't engage. The end.

ChocHotolate · 15/05/2026 11:17

Yes. I’m sure some (most) are bots. Hide function is great

I work with lots of different people and within lots of different communities. I observe all the problems and can see who's working hard to solve them and who is just paying lip service and doing the least.
I've been working across many communities for my whole career. I can see what benefits people and makes them have safety, security and health. I can see what is detrimental.
Debate is constant to look for solutions and improve things, but it's easy to see the motives and agenda behind peoples/groups actions (or lack of).

I'm sure people managed to engage with politics before internet forums existed. A lot of mumsnet posts are clearly fake.
People who are paid by a political party to stir up fear and anger to push a certain agenda on mumsnet obviously won't want OP encouraging people to hide posts of course. It looks from the poll a lot of people agree with her.

fabstraction · 15/05/2026 11:43

There's so much bias that they're generally pointless. I wouldn't use them for information, and they're not much use as entertainment, either. (More depressing than anything else!) If you don't have the 'correct' political opinions according to the loudest people, it's practically a form of self-flagellation to read political threads. I don't go so far as to hide them, usually, but I understand why some might, for a variety of reasons.

Theolittle · 15/05/2026 11:48

I’m not sure about it all being bots - I sometimes suspect that and check by looking at previous posts (sorry feels a bit stalkery, I don’t do it often) but I always find normal varied posts so far

I do think these are real people. The rudeness they aim at people with a different viewpoint to themselves seems very real.

I don't mind debate but there is one poster that will quote you and tear it apart over a minor detail but will avoid answering any legit question.
If see that user name ..I hde it

RockItLikeRocketFuel · 15/05/2026 23:58

YANBU. One of my first acts on seizing power will be to ban political threads from AIBU.

FudgeFudy · 16/05/2026 06:43

I totally understand the sentiment, and as is so often the case there are a number of people who are determined to misconstrue what you're saying in order to have a pop. The idea that if you can't be bothered with political threads on MN then you 'don't care' or 'won't know' what's going on in politics is hilarious. They contain waaay more heat than light, you know exactly what's going to be in them anyway, and I too have come to the conclusion that they are generally more bother than they're worth.

Blundl · 16/05/2026 07:00

There are a few posters that pile on if you don't share the same views as them, it's generally the same names, they must stalk all the political threads

WildEnergySupplier · 16/05/2026 07:01

If you're absolutely fine with the far right taking over and putting your children's futures at risk then of course it makes sense to not educate yourself

Because MN threads are the only way to 'educate youself' about politics. Gotcha.

TenderChicken · 15/05/2026 08:43

It's not unusual to disengage from politics, not sure you need a whole "look at me" post about it.

I agree. Why do you need to hide them? And not just hiding them, telling a bunch of randos that you've done it - just don't open them!

WildEnergySupplier · 16/05/2026 07:01
