Worried about my 18 year old son buying joke shirts from Afflecks Palace

ForSparklyFatball · 14/05/2026 19:50

Hi everyone, I’m after some advice because I’m really not sure if I’m overreacting or not. My son is 18 and has started going into Manchester at weekends with his university mates. They’ve been spending time in Afflecks Palace, which I know is full of alternative stalls, but he came back yesterday with a couple of t-shirts from the shop on the top floor that does the t-shirt printing.
One of them says “Don’t bully me, I’ll cum” and the other was along similar lines with crude sexual humour. He thought they were hilarious and just a bit of edgy fun, but I’m honestly concerned. At 18 he’s an adult, yet these kinds of slogans seem to normalise really objectifying and inappropriate attitudes, especially towards women and sex. I’ve tried speaking to him about it calmly, explaining why it bothers me, but he just laughed it off and said it’s only a joke.
Has anyone else come across these sorts of shirts in Afflecks or had their own son or daughter bring something similar home? Am I making too much of it, or is this worth having a firmer conversation about? Any thoughts on how to approach it without it escalating would be really helpful. Thanks.

You’re not a very nice person are you? Why the superiority complex?

What have your wages got to do with that offer?

It’s an S&M thing if you really want to get pedantic about it. What would normally be classed as Bullying-name calling , humiliation etc. turns them on. Nothing to do with non consensual sex.

Isn't it more a defence move than an S&M practice? Like a fake warning to a bully that they risk invoking a sexual response they neither expected nor want? I think I may have heard it in a Ricky Gervais routine. Anyway, the lack of consensus or awareness around its meaning suggests it might often not be taken the way the wearer thinks.

OonaStubbs · 14/05/2026 22:39

If you still do his washing, just make them mysteriously disappear. or wash them on a hot wash to make them shrink.

Thank you for understanding. I cried last night about this. Xxx

Get a grip. If you're crying over your son choosing some tacky t-shirts you need help, ffs.

Her way of saying she’s better than us?
Although she’s no idea how much any of us earn!

I’m local to Manchester and feel the need for some new slogan t shirts! see you there on Saturday @ForSparklyFatball

BringBackTheLight · 14/05/2026 22:41

I love Afflex, I go with my teens and we have a laugh and buy daft stuff! You really need to relax or you're going to alienate your son.
I'm 54 a mum and grandma. I don't find milf or gilf offensive and they're definitely not new terms. I bought dh the breakfast of champions one with a picture of a pussy on it.

SpaceRaccoon · 14/05/2026 22:42

And? I’ve experienced some awful things in my life. It hasn’t made me act like a dick to other people though.

Feis123 · 14/05/2026 22:48

Men and women joke and talk utter filth, men to men and women to women. Unfortunately, it is normalised these days.
What is shocking though is that he felt it appropriate for his mother to see it. This is so vile, I can't get my head around it. You have bigger things to worry about then inappropriate attitude of his towards rando women in general and sex in general. This is awful.

MILF is offensive and sexist.

I dont think that MILF is offensive or sexist really, I've always been happy to be called that. I think my response would be "too right I am" 😆
Although I did wear a t-shirt in my late teens which said "Sugar Tits" and my friends said "Butt Slut" and "16's legal?" so I'm not really one to get easily offended haha. Lighten up and let him wear the t-shirt

Is this an advert for afflecks ?

man I loved that place, I’m in my 50s and still appreciate an inappropriate tshirt

Me too.

When I was a teen, I had the one with a mushroom. It said, ' I must be a mushroom. They keep me in the dark and feed me bullshit ".

Dad went nuclear but I wore it til it fell off me.

When you're at university is the time to do stupid shit like this. I had one of those FCUK t shirts that were popular in the late 90s with the slogan "FCUK me on the beach." I'm sure my parents didn't approve but meh, I grew out of teen edginess in due course.

Haha I remember me and my mates all buying the fcuk French connection tops. I was so scared to wear it at first 🤣

This has to be an advert for Afflecks Palace surely. OP gets all irate ‘advertising’ t-shirts and suddenly business is up….

I want to go now. It's a long way from here and I'm not well but....I want to go there so badly now : )

Buy the same shirt yourself and wear it next time he’s home.
i don’t think you’ll see much more of it

He'd probably love it. The fool that he is.

It's t-shirt. Afflecks Palace is an amazing place for alternative clothing. That t-shirt is mild compared to some of the other stuff they sell. They also sell false nails, plushies, top hats and have a lot of variety for different people. I'm in my 30s and I still buy stuff like that. Hell I have an 'I hate people' top, it's one of my favourites!

His money, his choice. You don't have to like it. He might be young but he's still an adult. He's the right age for figuring out his own humour and boundaries, let him!

This thread is making me so nostalgic for my Saturdays at Affleck’s 25 years ago 🥲 I miss that place so much!

I was a student at Manchester in the early 1980s and I remember then it had some really good vintage clothing sellers. Loved it.

Last time I was there was about 15 years ago when DD was a young teen and the two of us were having a day in Manchester for something, can't remember what. We had time to kill so I suggested we go to Affleck's. I remember she was actually quite shocked because there was one shop selling drug paraphernalia and another selling novelty condoms. I think she disapproved!

Well, Maybe. But the least HE could do is, respect his mum's wishes.
