Angela Rayner's tax affairs

Ihateboris · 14/05/2026 08:10

I was a few days late submitting my Tax Return due to being in hospital last year and as result I was charged £100 late filing penalty.

AIBU to think that Angela Rayner should have to pay interest and penalties for underpayment of Stamp Duty. This makes me so fucking angry.

She used her disabled son’s trust fund to buy herself out of the property he lives in. What Mother does that to move in with her boyfriend 100’s of miles away?

One who wants her child to have housing security for life.

Jesus, start your own thread about Farage.

So you don't think all politicians whose financial affairs may look a bit dodgy should face the same amount of scrutiny then? It's OK to hound Rayner but leave Farage alone? Got it.

Did I say that? The PP clearly wants to discuss Farage, that much is clear from their posts. This is a thread about Angela Rayner. I suggested they start a separate thread if they want their posts to be discussed. It’s pretty standard on MN.

May I please see your thread police credentials? This thread has already ranged beyond just AR, and bringing Farage into it is just a way of highlighting how some people are held to far higher standards than others. Which is blatant hypocrisy.

But for what it's worth, this is where we stand:

  • Rayner has been cleared
  • There is no evidence that she received more favourable treatment than anyone else would have done
  • Actual people who understand how HMRC operates have corroborated the above

So it's fairly obvious that anyone wanting to go on and on casting aspersions at Angela Rayner is doing this for other reasons than justice, equality and legality. I wonder what those could be?

It's Saturday night. Take a chill pill.

That's actually quite good. Do you have the authority to challenge your own bollocks?

Well now. I’m the thread police. Nothing I say is bollocks.

It is when you carry on criticising Rayner against the judgement of HMRC, who have a track record of issuing penalties to dodgy politicians.

One might think you have an agenda, not that would be the case, i'm sure.

Rayner sought the advice of a firm with its own tax division, one could argue that their advice to seek further clarity was just them "upselling"

HMRC do not require a lay-person to keep getting tax advice, which is just that "an opinion/advice"

Oh dear, I think someone has missed the joke.

It was a shit joke, that's why.

But a good way for that poster to dodge the question of why Angela Rayner is still being hounded on this thread whilst the likes of Farage are being ignored. They just won't admit it's personal.

Gtfto2024 · 16/05/2026 21:52

Isn't that the point of "jokes" about nasty behaviour. Darvo.

TeenagersAngst · 16/05/2026 22:42

I really don’t think Farage is being ignored. He’s all over Mumsnet and there’s an investigation into him. But if you want to imagine some conspiracy theory, go ahead.

How can it be personal? I don’t know her. Do you?

So you've changed your mind on Rayner and believe her to be entirely & fairly exonerated by HMRC...

... Good to know.

Have we seen any receipts yet? Surely such an upstanding MP would want to promote proof of her paying her dues.

FinchiePink · 14/05/2026 08:31

We will never be privy to the full details (naturally), but there is every chance HMRC had already accepted her first, erroneous SDLT return.

I'm a tax advisor and HMRC are actually fairly reasonable, particularly when it comes to complex areas of legislation. And having dealt with trusts and SDLT (I'm a trust expert, that part I'm fine with) I can confirm that it is anything but simple, despite what the press keep saying. I hate dealing with SDLT. If I never had to look at it again I'd be very happy.

My guess is she's made the incorrect return to HMRC, HMRC have accepted it, then it came out it wasn't, and now everyone's had to do a bit of face-saving and consequently HMRC have waived penalties and interest. It wouldn't be the first time and it won't be the last. The difference here is that this has played out in public.

This situation wasn't due to negligence, like saying 'Forget it, I haven't filed my return,' nor was it about attempting to exploit a loophole by transferring my house to my girlfriend to avoid taxes, similar to what Farage did. She acted in good faith, but unfortunately, the advice she received was wrong, particularly because it involved her disabled son. I feel profound despair for anyone who equates her actions with the morally dubious behaviour of that con artist whom racists want to see destroy Britain.

Why is it even a competition as to which MP behaves more dishonourably? If you're serious about expecting honourable behaviour you would be applying that equally. Your last statement is pure hyperbole.

Araminta1003 · 17/05/2026 09:26

I think the jury is out there on who would destroy Britain more - Angela Rayner or Farage, ahem.
If Angela Rayner backstabs Sir Keir Starmer she hardly gets to keep the morale high ground, even if it is true that she was “Wronged”. I mean the law is the law and death and taxes, ah - it is not about “wronged”. People enjoy it because additional stamp duty although introduced by the Tories is more of a leftie control measure. So if she got stung on some technical grounds, people enjoy the drama of it. And that is where it ends. If she feels punished by the tax system, join the queue!
But for some of us, we really just did want to understand the law behind it all. It needs reform and clarification.

Araminta1003 · 17/05/2026 09:31

And anyway, what do they like to say?

Enjoy the privilege of being able to pay taxes, it is a huge privilege to be able to! Do your bit for the country.

The real Angela is desperately trying not to stand up. She, like Streeting, is desperate for the power that they can see within their grasp. Just think if she had kept her book clean, she'd be a shoe in to replace Starmer. Then the party's misogynists would have rallied around trying to find a way to not elect a female PM.
