The Priory charge £160 per session which seems outrageous to me but wanted to ask what others pay for private therapy?

£60 for a BACP accredited psychotherapist found through BACP’s directory.

Qualifications, PhDs, Masters, and letters after their name mean absolutely nothing when it comes to how good someone is at actually relating to another human being and sitting alongside and holding their pain. I tried 5 therapists before I found mine.
when I first began working with her she was newly qualified woman straight out of training. She has bags of patience, was incredibly attuned to me, and was willing to try and meet me. No fancy credentials, but she was brilliant.
The rest is just window dressing really. Has anyone else found the same?

I am a therapist and I absolutely agree with this. You can have all the fancy letters you want but It's like trying to have a haircut by telephone if you don't have a natural way with people's emotions. And even the best therapist is not going to be right for everyone.

@iamfedupwiththis Yes. My husband and I have long term mental health conditions and I was abused by my father (and have a codependent, emotionally unavailable mother as a result). My DH goes once every six weeks, and I go biweekly.

Our daughter is 14 and has recently come out to us. Her issues are likely to be temporary and she goes weekly.

We all benefit from learning good coping skills and having an independent listening ear who is non judgemental.

bigsoftcocks · 14/05/2026 14:03

Therapist at the priory aren’t that special and aren’t going to have any more additional kudos than someone like a clinical or counselling Psychologist.

Unless they Psychologist lead of therapy services with 20+ years experience and some other great accolades 160 per hour is ridiculous

It might be a big brand that everyone knows, but it my experience it is literally just that.

OP, can you negotiate a private rate with your therapist and meet her elsewhere other than in priory locations?

She is probably going as she see's the two of you going regularly and assumes it is the norm

How much are you spending a month on therapy?

Nanalovesnature · 14/05/2026 15:36

Sorry to derail but does therapy actually do anything and if so what? It seems like a lot of money.

Fuck therapy, get out in nature. It's free.

Yeah. That hasn’t stopped my massive anxiety that leaves me unable to sleep, but my therapist has.

To answer the question. I pay £125 for CBT and £20 for affordable counselling though MIND. The latter is with a trainee though. The fully qualified charge £60.

Therapy saved my life.
Trying helpful suggestions of getting out in nature when I was at my lowest had me planning how I was going to die.

So are you still going?

saltysugar · 14/05/2026 15:44

Mine was paid through Health Insurance. She charged £80 an hour but offered reduced rates for people on a low income.

How much are you spending a month on therapy?

Less than we would spend on films, multiple cars and petrol, concert tickets and a load of things that other people prioritise.

If my mental health is poor, I would be unable to work and other stuff would suffer, so it's economical in the long run.

At the moment I am going weekly and so is my daughter but again, it is likely to be temporary for her (6-8weeks).

I thought the original thread was genuine but this is feeling kind of goady now. I answered the original question. I don't need to defend why we go. It is a well researched treatment recommended by NICE guidelines and MIND. Our therapists are not people who have done a counselling course online, they are excellent, trained professionals who work for CAMHS, the NHS and private hospitals.

gudetamathelazyegg · 14/05/2026 16:04

£55/hr for a BACP psychotherapist, weekly sessions in person. I've had CBT via NHS with counsellors and 'talk therapy' through my employee assistance scheme, but the psychotherapist has been so much better. I talk to her about my long term anxiety/depression and childhood neglect/trauma (but I feel weird labelling it trauma).

I couldn't do weekly if she was £100+ so feeling quite grateful now!

It isn't meant to be a goady, if you see it that way, that is a reflection on you.

It is a conversation, they move on in different directions.

TomatoSandwiches · 14/05/2026 16:19

I think what people really need first is to have an indepth assessment to find what kind of therapist/therapy you will be served best by and also a kind of a matching service by an assessor that personally knows the therapists most suitable. It has taken me almost a decade to find the right person, it really makes all the difference.

£70 for a physiotherapist- 50 mins. Worth every penny.

That isn't how a forum or a discussion works.

What do you do if your therapist says something you don't agree with or challenges you?

Or don't they?

This thread is about the cost of therapy so no one is interested in your goady rubbish. Start your own thread if you are genuinely interested in the therapy process.
