The Priory charge £160 per session which seems outrageous to me but wanted to ask what others pay for private therapy?

Fuck therapy, get out in nature. It's free.

Oh dear. Big fan of nature. It's absolutely NOT the same as therapy, and don't kid yourself that it is

I pay £60 for a one hour session, small local independent practice

Chipsahoy · 14/05/2026 08:35

£50 rural Scotland.

Owly11 · 14/05/2026 08:41

As a rule of thumb higher fees can frequently mean worse therapist. Very low fees are also not a good sign either, so I would suggest looking for therapists in the £50-£80 bracket if outside of London and the £60-£100 bracket if in London.

£60 for a BACP accredited psychotherapist found through BACP’s directory.

Qualifications, PhDs, Masters, and letters after their name mean absolutely nothing when it comes to how good someone is at actually relating to another human being and sitting alongside and holding their pain. I tried 5 therapists before I found mine.
when I first began working with her she was newly qualified woman straight out of training. She has bags of patience, was incredibly attuned to me, and was willing to try and meet me. No fancy credentials, but she was brilliant.
The rest is just window dressing really. Has anyone else found the same?

I found the same. Is he perfect? No. Do we have clashes and conflict? Absolutely. But he has stuck with me through all of it and proved a hundred times over that he will stay and we will sort it, no matter what.

I think perseverance, compassion and willingness to further educated and improve yourself is a much more important quality than simply having a lot of qualifications and experience.

My last therapist I’m sure it was £70 at least.

Tiredandwired2 · 14/05/2026 10:35

£130 for 50 minutes with a clinical psychologist for my daughter. Counsellor was around 50-65 but not as effective as clinical psychologist which reflects the cost

ViaRia01 · 14/05/2026 10:44

I had psychotherapy in London and her rate was £120 for 50 min. I had read that it is worth asking if they can offer a lower rate and to my surprise it worked. The conversation was difficult (keep in mind I had not yet had any sessions other than the initial consultation/ agreement terms) and I felt guilty / awkward (hence, the therapy!) but she asked what price could I pay, I suggested £90 am she accepted. It was still a lot of money for me but I’m glad for the time I had with her.

I think that given your circumstances the conversation could be easier - you value the sessions enormously but private medial plan has ended, can she offer a reduced rate in order to continue the work. Have you tried that?

falalalalalalaa · 14/05/2026 10:45

£70 in London, psychoanalytic psychotherapist. Friends/colleagues’ therapists range from £50 (unusually low in London) to around £85.

falalalalalalaa · 14/05/2026 10:49

Clinical psychologists absolutely take the piss with their fees. I know a psychologist charging £150 per session who is very depressed himself, and only does CBT, not proper talk therapy. Lots of psychotherapists are just as highly trained. But the industry is a Wild West and it’s very hard to know what to look for. (I’m a nearly qualified psychotherapist with a masters.)

Only a particular type of person would view trying to understand yourself better and to unpick unhelpful scrips you may have imbibed in childhood, or to come to terms with the ongoing impact of ACEs, as ‘navel gazing’.

Therapy, with hard luck and the right therapist match, can be transformative.

Not everyone who is in therapy has suffered ACE or trauma.

Confrontayshunme · 14/05/2026 10:51

I pay £70 for 50 minutes, my teen's is £55 for 50 minutes and my husband is £55 for an hour. We are in the southwest and my daughter and I have online therapists. My husband's therapy is in person.

I recently found someone new when my psychologist retired, and some were up to £150 per hour.

its2025 · 14/05/2026 10:55

Counselling session with local therapist for anxiety issues. £55 per session of 1 hour.

ButterYellowFlowers · 14/05/2026 10:57

Two years ago I paid £65 a session. My husband now pays £75 for 75 minutes

Ilovecheeseyah · 14/05/2026 10:57

200 euro

mindutopia · 14/05/2026 11:00

I haven’t had a session myself in about 4-5 years, but I paid £50-55.

🙄 please do provide your evidence that getting out in nature, helps resolve trauma from an abusive childhood.

KvotheTheBloodless · 14/05/2026 11:19

£100

TheBlueKoala · 14/05/2026 11:21

50 £ for 45 minutes for my teenage son.

aurpod1980 · 14/05/2026 11:57

£120 my child is £55

aurpod1980 · 14/05/2026 11:57

I pay £120 but my she is a Psycologist of many years experience not a ‘therapist’

aurpod1980 · 14/05/2026 11:59

I should say she has been transformative but not only to me to my family through the work I’ve done on myself and even to my friends. Some who have had similar trauma to me and I’ve supported them to see things differently and seek out support for themselves xx

HisNotHes · 14/05/2026 12:00

£125 for 50 mins online with qualified psychologist (rather than ‘just’ a counsellor).

tiramisugelato · 14/05/2026 12:00

£55 per hour for private psychotherapy. I go twice a month.

Exactly I had to go back 50 years and the therapist let me tell my story.
And it was far from easy.
Like yourself childhood trauma DV household was mine.

So all 3 of you are in therapy?
