To wonder why people choose to live in London?

1000 replies

Cantbloodyrememberthenameonthread · 12/05/2026 09:36

I always wonder. And reading a recent thread prompted me to ask the question. Why do people do it by choice? People complain about the house prices (rightly), ulez, nursery fees, cost of everything being more expensive, commutes, tubes etc.

if you’re not absolutely tied to London for work or health or I guess family. Why do you choose to live there when there are so many cheaper easier lifestyle options in the country?

I KNOW it isn’t. And if you know that, you also know that “outside London” isn’t one contiguous place.

Of course I’m aware there are non-London airports. I’ve flown from several of them. But there are also large chunks of the UK that are poorly served for transport. There’s no point in pretending otherwise.

There are airports that claim to be London and aren't either.

Yes some places are far out but if you were saying travelling to Borneo then getting to an airport wouldn't stop you even if it was a bit of a PITA

MilkyLeonard · 13/05/2026 12:07

We’re just going around in circles here.

I am NOT saying it’s impossible. Just not as easy. That’s all.

Tryagain26 · 13/05/2026 12:09

Because they like it.
I love visiting and I can understand why people choose to live there. It's not a strange decision at all

It's easier and cheaper for me to get a bus to Stansted for £3 than my friend on the isle of dogs to shep across to Heathrow

x2boys · 13/05/2026 12:06

If you wanr to travel i dont think living in rural norfolk will stop you
Its not like the UK is a remote island thousands of miles from anywhere

I traveled most when Iived in rural Norfolk. Norwich airport is brilliant, small and easy. Its just a short flight to Amsterdam and then you can fly anywhere.

Why are people being so extreme about this? there are more options to live than either right in the centre of London or some rural backwater which only has one bus every week, a population of 24 and a dog called Colin.

Its not either London OR some remote lighthouse in the outer Hebrides

😆

And so can I from Stansted it Southend without needing to live in London

But why would he seeing he lives in " the greatest transport hub" it's a fair trek to Heathrow

I'm beginning to think living in London is certainly not broadening anyone's minds if they think the world outside of central London is akin to living like the Amish. Quite the contrary, its making them rather ignorant 🤭

I’m a born and bred Londoner. I tried living elsewhere and I hated it. So came home again. I don’t want to live anywhere else. 👍

Literally no-one has said this, if you read the thread. As I said before it would be great if people would read posts rather than inventing positions.

Yes they are lol

People are suggesting you'll travel more if you live in London, your kids will be less likely to leave you, that you'll be less racist and when comparing London living to other places they are always comparing it to extremely rural living which as I said, is ridiculous because most people dont live in either central London or on some remote farm.

Nobody has said any of this, you’re simply spinning to an agenda. If you have a beef with Londoners and you want a fight why not start a dedicated thread?

I think some people msy have left their home town years ago ,when things were not accesible to move to London and been overawed with 24 hour supermarkets ,the availablity of takeaways / restaurants selling food from diffrent cultures ,muti cultural living etc ,etc and not reslised large parts of the uk have caught up with london for these things.

basoon · 13/05/2026 12:53

Big capital cities have a buzz and range of cultural activities you don't get anywhere else. A lot of people like that.

I have read it too
Ihink its you that needs to reread the thread.

Goldenbear · 13/05/2026 12:57

MilkyLeonard · 13/05/2026 10:22

As you say though, relative to size. And London is a vast city of 10 million plus people. It’s actually one of the greenest capital cities in Europe.

I am a born and bred West Londoner, DH is and I still have family there but all our friends post college have left, the exodus is about cost of living but just been hemmed in as the population is massive and on that front I don't think it is as good now, London In the 90searly 00s was great as much more creative and edgy. Of course, arguably many better aspects if you think gentrification is a good thing. I live in a place that costs the same, more in some cases as large parts of London. There are rural houses that are out of reach of many people, including those from London so demand

Goldenbear · 13/05/2026 12:59

So demand in our area is a demand to leave London, that's what has pushed up house prices.

Yeah, the most exciting thing about London is the supermarkets.

I dont, I actually love visiting London. But it's not the centre of the universe, nor does it mean if you live outside of London you must live rurally and live some weird, insular, remote, uneducated life.

They have said it- YOU read the thread.
