Streeting has to make his move now, Starmer will never be this weak and he has the chance to go now.

Burnham might be more likely to win, but he is not in, and where exactly is a safe seat by election they could parachute him in for? (nowhere)

So - Streeting will never have a better chance of being PM, he pulls the trigger NOW or he never pulls it at all.

I did say on Thursday that I thought it would be Friday or Monday.... Tuesday is a pretty good guess.

This is a quiet Bat People moment... That Speech... not worth remembering...

Apologies, I do her a disservice, it was “abstract failure” when she meant “abject failure”.
Televised during the election debates on the BBC.

Sorry Ange!

Showing your colours there.

Sorry Ange!

It seems unfair to pull her up on that as it’s easy to understand what she meant.

As I mentioned earlier, the conclusions from an official investigation said AR intended to pay all appropriate taxes. She has now done this. None of this suggests tax-dodging to me. I also don’t agree she is a hypocrite.

Personally, I think she doesn’t always behave with dignity (ie when she called the Opposition ‘scum’), but I think she’s still fit for public office and good at her job.

An individual who refers to others as 'scum' is definitely not fit to be the Prime Minister. It's disgusting.

ByGraptharsHammer · 14/05/2026 12:46

Pretty clear Streeting wanted MPs to provide a coronation and pressure Starmer to resign. He’s not that popular with actual party members. Looks like he has fluffed it.

TemperanceWest · 14/05/2026 13:04

Streeting has just resigned.

Thefastandthecurious5 · 14/05/2026 13:10

Thought Wes Streeting’s resignation letter was very good - quite stirring.

Thefastandthecurious5 · 14/05/2026 13:11

I am curious about why it took him so long to resign though, given all the speculation around his resignation. Maybe he was really trying to patch things up with KS?!

ByGraptharsHammer · 14/05/2026 13:14

No. He thought he could get to be leader without a contest. Thats naive. At least now there will be one and he has accepted that

SingleSexSpacesInSchools · 14/05/2026 13:18

I TOLD YOU HE WOULD RESIGN TODAY!! :D

So - he definitely has 81 sigs, I bet Burnham is going to be parachuted in, we have a bun fight on our hands...

At a cost of £12 billion to the economy apparently. Well done Starmer.

Now how it works. In Labour the incumbent always gets to be in the contest. It's never an appointment without votes.

Rumour has it that Streeting doesn't have the backing he needs.

Maybe Wes Streeting is hoping that others will follow. I don’t think they will tbh. His shot himself in the foot.
All the PM will do is appoint a new Health Secretary and sit on his hands I bet.
Have to see what happens.

Wolmando · 14/05/2026 13:32

Probably waited for the NHS figures

He was trying. Fruitlessly. The moment Starmer said he would not resign then the coronation was not going to happen. It explains the letters, the waiting, the briefing, and the coffee less 16 minute meeting. Streeting wanted a coronation, not a contest.

But Ed Miliband said days ago that if Streeting did this he'd enter the contest so that claim makes no sense.

I think there is some in this as he probably needed 130 MPs at least. He will need to get them now. If he had them, he would have declared and gone for it.

He has weeks to get them, it could still happen if course. But it will be a proper contest and not a coup

TemperanceWest · 14/05/2026 13:37

Dragonscaledaisy · 14/05/2026 13:30

Who is spreading that rumour?

This para of his letter is being taken to mean he doesn't have enough names, at least not yet:

It is now clear that you will not lead the Labour party into the next general election and that Labour MPs and Labour unions want the debate about what comes next to be a battle of ideas, not of personalities or petty factionalism. It needs to be broad, and it needs the best possible field of candidates. I support that approach and I hope that you will facilitate this.
