Almost 80 MPs have called for Starmer to Resign. Streeting making his move before Burnham has a chance to get in. Leadership election between Starmer, Streeting & Rayner, & a few MPs looking to make a name. Official Tue 12th?

Link to spreadsheet of Labour MPS calling for resignation - https://x.com/GuidoFawkes/status/2053925699824574889

Streeting has to make his move now, Starmer will never be this weak and he has the chance to go now.

Burnham might be more likely to win, but he is not in, and where exactly is a safe seat by election they could parachute him in for? (nowhere)

So - Streeting will never have a better chance of being PM, he pulls the trigger NOW or he never pulls it at all.

I did say on Thursday that I thought it would be Friday or Monday.... Tuesday is a pretty good guess.

This is a quiet Bat People moment... That Speech... not worth remembering...

Do you know what? I do not actually listen to anything Farage says. So I accuse myself of burying my head in the sand on that particular issue.

But brandishing around hateful terms and phrases does no one any good, the morally virtuous or the racist.

I haven't brandished any hateful terms about?

Respectfully, you should get your head out of the sand if you are opposed to Reform. Maybe I am more familiar with Farage's awful rhetoric because I was extremely worried Reform was going to gain power in my country. Ignoring danger doesn't make it go away

Who has called Farage the second coming of Hitler? No-one. But there are parallels between Hitler's rhetoric and Farage's.

Edited

You know that Farage is adept at tapping into populist rhetoric, into mobilising voters. You also know that Reform is effectively a one-man band.

To mention Hitler in the same sentence is absurd.

Geert Wilders and Marine Le Pen to name two, have deployed similar rhetoric - it’s nothing new.

So …what next?

Streeting doesn’t have the numbers so suspended animation till Burnham
gets back, at which point they realise he was a pipedream and it all starts up again?

or do they go for Milliband (yes breakfast roll photo man) to hold off the Green threat?

The disregard displayed as the King quickly read ‘his’ speech was interesting.

No. Farage is a serious person. His jokey persona is a concern. But my point is that it is not very clear about what people are voting for when they vote Reform. You could guess there was a racialist element. Or maybe there is not. I think it is a party that allows people to feel more than think about what would actively happen if they had control. Thats pretty good for getting votes of undecided people.

Feelings are a stupid basis on which to vote, but people do. It means they can claim not to be responsible later

Feelings are a very common motivation for how we vote though. Most people don’t have access to the facts or evidence they need to guide their vote, for various reasons, and most parties don’t even keep their manifesto promises, so feelings are all people have, really, to direct which party they vote for.

He doesn’t have the numbers yet, but if he shows his hand tomorrow, he may get them or he may simply serve to flush out Miliband or other.

Net/net - Starmer is weakened, even if he stands and fights. His authority is already shattered and its merely a function of time for him now.

I really don’t get people’s hate for Miliband. That was an unfortunate photo, but no one looks attractive when they’re eating. So weird to judge him for inelegant eating when he seems pretty good on the whole - principled, decent and a very experienced politician.

Not sure he doesn’t have the numbers, looks like he and Miliband will make a move.

His stubborn commitment to CCS in the face of growing evidence from other countries is somewhat baffling unless it's part of Starmer's great EU reset and we shall become the dumping ground for the rest of Europe's waste.

Sorry - you’re right and it was mean.
We judge on superficial criteria very often now and, while hating that, I threw it in. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Do you really think it’s about the photo?

I think I it’s more to do with his complete lack of flexibility about net zero and people were hoping for one Miliband but then ended up with the other one.

Each their own, Miliband to get the left of the party votes as AR and AB can’t go on it rn

the80sweregreat · 13/05/2026 19:48

If people think Wes Streeting won’t be popular , wait til they hear that Ed Milliband might make a play for the top job. I feel that he is even more unpopular, especially as he is wedded to net zero and many blame that for the high cost of living. The press will be vicious , they didn’t like him the first time around. It’ll be even more personal than how he eats anything.

People always want to think they are on the right side. When parties aren’t clear about what they mean, you can easily feel they must share your own values. Looking at what is being said and who gets elected tells you much more than feelings. Everyone can do that.

They absolutely have the numbers streeting will be quitting tomorrow as far as we can see which means he must have 81 guaranteed signatures and that’s not a stretch out of 400

I don't think Streeting will win a leadership contest even if he does have the numbers to trigger one.

Ed, of course will get a hard time. Is there anyone in the Labour Party that would have an easy ride? No!

But this is not a popularity contest, the fight is between left and right.

The left has to have a soft left leaning candidate.

The right need a continuance candidate.

I am stretching the limits on both of the above,
but you have to work with what you’ve got.

Ihatethistimeline · 13/05/2026 21:35

I don’t get the hype over Burnham at all. He comes across as a preening lightweight to me. I could never imagine him being taken seriously on the world stage. Plus he loves playing up the north/south divide. I don’t think anyone wishing to be PM should play on regional division.

I really don’t get why so many Labour supporters believe most voters want him. It all feels a bit media manufactured. The last thing the country needs is someone trying to veer left when the focus should be on bold moves to boost growth ( join single market and customs union) and cut welfare (end triple lock, WFA).

I’m sick of politics being treated like sports teams and PMs like football managers. I’m starting to believe that since Brexit the country has increasingly become ungovernable.

Why not? You keep saying Starmer is going "tomorrow" and you've been quite clearly wrong for days now. And yet you persist.

If you want better political debate, then be the change you wish to see in the world and perhaps stop with all the feverish excitement over totally false predictions.

I don’t really see a big problem with net zero. I think it’s going to be really positive for us in the long term.

And now Rayner is miraculously ’cleared’ of any deliberate skulduggery around her tax affairs. Perfect timing!!
