Reform- KCC & the Lord's Prayer

To think this is a huge waste of time?

Row over Lord's Prayer proposal for Reform-led council https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/crepqgy48djo

Reform have put forward a proposal for the Lord's Prayer and national anthem to be sung/recited at its meetings.

At a time when the council is £700m in debt and raised Council Tax by almost 4% last year. How on earth could any business justify singing songs and reciting prayers at the start of meetings. Let alone the cost of having a vote on such a pointless matter.

Thats before getting into the fact that less than 2% of people in Kent go to church on a Sunday.

There's a whole multitude of other reasons this isn't appropriate but I don't think reform will care about those...

The resource constraints didn’t stop these councils from indulging in taking the knee at every given opportunity or flying pride flags.

So they can find the time to do this also. If you start this game, don’t be a sore loser when you are losing.

BrownBookshelf · 10/05/2026 14:40

Already excited for the arguments over which version of the Lords Prayer they use.

PinkFrogss · 10/05/2026 14:41

Religion shouldn’t have a place in politics.

And how many reform councillors uphold Christian values in their personal lives? Perhaps they should start with looking inward.

MabelRoyds · 10/05/2026 14:44

Interesting! Perhaps the Christian values being to the forefront of every meeting would make them be wise and charitable.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 10/05/2026 14:44

Does this mean that Reform counsellors will also be following guidance from religious leaders such as the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Pope about showing compassion towards migrants, support for the most vulnerable etc.

Sskka · 10/05/2026 14:46

Oh no! You wouldn’t believe how much prayer and the anthem are going to add to that £700m debt!

tartyflette · 10/05/2026 14:48

Is everyone affected by this likely to be a Christian? No Muslims or Jews, or atheists?
I have no religion and would object strongly to being subjected to this.
I would hope that those people on the council who are similar to me would do likewise. Or if they are of another faith they would say that their beliefs should be respected and included.

Plummagic · 10/05/2026 14:48

That would be hilarious if it wasn't so ridiculous.

Yes but other parties’ leopards aren’t supposed to eat people’s faces.

Yeh let’s go for it - nowt else has got their arses in gear!

I do wonder if atheists might be the most unhappy about this, especially those who are particularly pro-secularism.

ExtraOnions · 10/05/2026 14:52

If they are keen on all Christian values - in particular the ones about welcoming strangers, looking after the poor, humility, justice, caring for the vulnerable, serving others etc .. then sounds good to me.

If however they are using religion to marginalise communities, make people feel unwelcome, and using Christianity as a thin veneer for their prejudices.. their can do one.

climbintheback · 10/05/2026 14:52

Perhaps Jerusalem will be more inclusive and it’s a great tune!

WildGarden · 10/05/2026 14:53

They're going to love this bit

Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world over

Sit outside till we’ve finished being patriotic then you can come in!

lazyarse123 · 10/05/2026 14:56

I am an atheist and would refuse to join in. Religion shouldn't have anything to do with council business.

Ophy83 · 10/05/2026 14:58

FFS. I live in Kent. There are so many essential issues they need to resolve before they start debating this. The roads are unsafe with potholes causing accidents. Teachers and social workers are so overburdened they are going off work with stress. But this is what they focus on!

I’m as atheist and anti-Reform as you can get but, this is absolutely true. You either let religion and ideology in across the board. Or you don’t.

What's patriotic about the Lords Prayer? As for the national anthem that's just virtue signalling. If they want to be patriotic just get the job done without any showy nonsense.

Plummagic · 10/05/2026 15:01

Christian values my arse. I'd be pissed off if I was a Christian and those Reform loons were hijacking my religion to use as thinly veiled racism.

AImportantMermaid · 10/05/2026 15:02

Good grief. This is what these people choose to spend their time doing. If they’re so desperate to say the Lord’s Prayer or sing the national anthem they can do that whenever they want. When they’re at work they should be focused on improving the lives of their residents, not faffing around with songs and prayers 🙄

AImportantMermaid · 10/05/2026 15:04

Stop fucking about with the national anthem and get the potholes fixed you loons. That’s what you’re getting paid for.

IdaGlossop · 10/05/2026 15:05

The first step on the road to 'rolling back the years' and recreating the white-face society of the 1950s. A very bad idea.

sortyourdietout · 10/05/2026 15:07

Don’t mind the national anthem, Lords Prayer on ceremonial days but every council meeting? It’s a bit overkill. Not sure what the purpose of it is. At least Pride/Ukraine flags were to show support. Is this to show support for monarchy and Christianity?
