AIBU to consider starting an alternative provision from home?

AIBU to consider setting up an educational Alternative Provision ?

I have an enthusiasm (I am hesitating to say what, which is probably BU, but it's a bit marmite) and I'd enjoy sharing it in a creative way.

I'm not sure whether it should be based in my home. I know of someone who runs an alternative provision on her smallholding doing animal and farming activities. I've also visited one outdoor and one indoor alternative provisions that are companies using premises (a huge outdoor activity centre and a floor of office space respectively). I'd need to create a large home office/small classroom.

I imagine there's a fair bit of regulation and bureaucracy, maybe similar to childminding.

Eons ago I did tutoring from home (when I lived in a city) and I ran an after school activity in a church hall.

Lots of children and young people don't go to school for various reasons. Perhaps some of them would enjoy some activities not tied to a curriculum or exams although I could give exam support if wanted. I'm quite good at my thing and quite a good teacher.

The AIBU is about the reasonableness of this as a project for me when my child (fingers crossed) goes to school full time in September. Are alternative provisions on the way out because of the white paper or will they still be needed for a few more years? Or will Reform change the landscape of education so much that I'd be better off going back to college or university and getting more qualifications?

I'd be really interested in your views if you've run or used an alternative provision but also if you have views about this kind of activity in general. TIA 🙂

I would love to enroll my child!

I think it does depend on what your hoping to deliver as to whether it's reasonable to do it from home, so I think you'll get more helpful advice if you say. But on the surface of it it sounds fine?

I know someone who does this from a community based premises rather than home. Depends what your home is like I guess. Look at Ofsted Childcare regulations for information about what you need to offer to be a registered provider.

There’s a big boom in AP at the moment as so many are out of school.

lots starting up near me. The paperwork is quite something though

Good luck, sounds like a great idea, where I live very much needed, lots of children attending APs few days a week while still on school role and funded by the schools. children who are home educated would also love the Chance to attend but as there is no funding available for them parents have to pay or they miss out if parents cant afford to pay . Gaining some form of qualification, experience, skill would also really help
