To think it's absolutely ridiculous that the BBC are treating today like a General Election?

It's almost like they've been told to shove Reform down our throats or something ..

You can’t deny it’s interesting though.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 08/05/2026 19:30

Yanbu, embarrassed that Ive fully bought into the hype 🙈

Createausername1970 · 08/05/2026 19:31

It's no different to any other local election coverage in recent years.

When it's a party someone supports doing well it doesn't jar so much as when it's a party they don't support.

So reporting facts (rare for the BBC these days) about major electoral shifts is a problem for you? Is it because you don’t like the results?

Goldshelfie · 08/05/2026 19:32

It is our parliamentary election in Scotland though, and also Wales.

This.

Jamclag · 08/05/2026 19:36

I agree. I'm not sure why the BBC as a publicly funded institution is so desperate for a Reform government in three years - turkeys voting for Christmas. Which says to me there are obviously much more powerful vested interests pushing this behind the scenes.

toomuchfaff · 08/05/2026 19:42

VE Day today... not that you'd have known with 24/7 coverage of council elections...

I don't like the results, that's certainly fair to say.
I guess things have to sink really low before they will go up again.

JustGiveMeReason · 08/05/2026 19:44

I've said this on a couple of other threads in the run up to the election.

They have continually, literally said that it is a vote to reflect the opinion on the Government, when it should be no such thing. It is really frustrating.

Scotland and Wales are voting for their National Government, but in England, we have voted for Local Councillors (and Mayors in some places).

Jamclag · 08/05/2026 19:55

Right from his MEP days the BBC were obsessed with giving Farage a disproportionate amount of air time and spent little time scrutinizing his financial affairs - which now includes 5 million quid in back handers from billionaire business men for his 'security', not to mention his links to dodgy crypto investments. If I was being generous I'd say it was because he made 'good telly', played devil's advocate (question time etc) but I really think there's no way Reform would be where they are today without the helpful marketing strategy provided by the BBC alongside other more obvious billionaire owned media.

ainsleysanob · 08/05/2026 19:56

You don’t think the results of yesterday’s elections are, erm, significant?

Jamclag · 08/05/2026 19:59

@mumsnet Why has my second post been hidden?

Swiftie1878 · 08/05/2026 20:01

Since the GE, the polls have been quite stark.
It’s totally normal that the media would focus on the ‘mid term elections’ and use technology to extrapolate for the HOC.

We should be grateful! This is giving us all fair warning of what will happen if nothing changes. We need ACTION!

I think this is it. Even so I’m not sure giving the entire day of programming to election coverage when the results weren’t going to start coming in until the afternoon was strictly necessary. It’s not quite the same as a general election where the first results come in about an hour after polls close.

I don’t see a hidden post?

Dearg · 08/05/2026 20:02

Here in Scotland we have had election coverage on BBC1 AND BBC Scotland all day, best I can tell. No other news.
I thought that’s why they created BBC Scotland, so we had the parochial stuff there.

It is important, of course, but give us a choice. Lots of talking heads, talking shite, as we say here.

Or just maybe it’s because Reform
are polling so high and the BBC is the national broadcaster - not the broadcaster of people you like.

Yep and a historic change in Wales. Plus big losses in local elections for Labour.

Not especially. We spent quite a lot of time handwringing over reform gains and Tory losses after the last set of elections. They barely made a dent in the GE results.

There are 3 years until the next election. A lot can happen before then. And a lot of the reform gains are where the Labour vote got split with the greens. That’ll happen less in a general election with tactical voting.

Jamclag · 08/05/2026 20:11

SingleSexSpacesInSchools · 08/05/2026 20:03

My point refers not just to today but historically - the level of coverage over the last few years has been disproportionate to the number of elected MPs.
