Fucking hell no one can win here, OP don’t go then?! 3 hours is literally nothing for sports day - for a whole school.

Is there any need to swear? 🙄

School events take part during the school day, you carnt have reception class doing an evening sports day. You carnt expect the whole school to come back in the evening for weekend for sports day because at least half wont show up due to other commitments, bedtime for the younger ones. You carnt expect school to work to your schedule. It's school, the hours are 8.50 to 3.10 ISH. If you expect school to run to your specific schedule you are crazy. Why should all these children lose their sports day just because you work? Sports day is about the children not parents

At one point did I suggest they run to my schedule? Every other school I know of do 1 hour sports days.

1 hour is better to arrange time off work. 3 hours slap bang in the day is not.

Speaking to other parents on the playground, they also feel the same.

Sports day is a fun day for the children after a long school year. Parents are invited as a courtesy. You don't have to go. You carnt expect a school to change their timings for a few parents, it's not realistic

Comes in pretty handy though when most people work for a living and stay at home mums and benefit claiming is so frowned upon on here. I agree with OP it's long. All 4 of my kids have only ever had sports days that max 2 hours, 1 hour for infant school. Unless you have got a child who is particularly sporty, three hours watching yours and others' kids run round a field is tedious for both parents and kids.

Hallelujah! Thankyou for understanding 😊

Unfortunately, my husband and I have to work. We don't have the bonus of staying at home.

They don't arrange sports day to fit in with work schedules. Why should the children be limited to 1 hour. If you can go for an hour then go. Just don't expect the school to limit the sports day timings for you. Jesus Christ so entitled

So don't go. Why should a whole school of kids be penalised for your circumstances?

My parents never attended a sports day - you don’t have to go 🤷‍♀️

Nor did mine. It's not compulsory.

ScaryM0nster · 08/05/2026 15:44

Do you not get annual leave? So many on here have said don’t go, so, err, don't?

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 08/05/2026 15:48

Well I think it's ridiculous as a parent as I find them very boring for the few minutes my child will be competing. But for the children it's a fun day and not too long for them. I think that timing is stupid though, drop kid at school, then have to go back to school in the middle of the day and back again at home time, especially when trying to work as well. Our school starts theirs straight after morning drop off and finishes at 12 which seems more sensible.

Tshirtking · 08/05/2026 15:49

I see the problem, the sports day too long for you. It's not however to long for the kids or the school. Dont you think sports day is about the kids, and what works best for the kids not random mums on a vent?

TheRealMagic · 08/05/2026 15:57

I have a bit more sympathy for OP than some other posters. Reception can be a bit of a shock because often you go from private nursery, which is entirely set up to facilitate parents working, to school, which is not. But as pp have said this is pretty standard and the school isn't doing anything weird or inconsiderate here.

Scrumbless · 08/05/2026 16:05

1 hour sports day? Never heard of this.

Ours is 2 hours 15 minutes. Morning or afternoon. Or if you’ve got more than one child, both.

Skybluepinky · 08/05/2026 16:14

No of course not.

Tshirtking · 08/05/2026 16:15

Prepare yourself. You have 6 more years in this school, schools are there for the kids needs, not yours. As a parent you can either not go, or arrange time to go. They carnt run a school on the individual needs of hundreds of parents.

WongLynchFellini · 08/05/2026 16:19

Ours was always about 3 hours even back in the 90s. It basically took up the whole of school after lunch and I think it’s the same with the school at the end of my street these days. I get it’s not very convenient for all parents but I don’t think it’s unusual or ridiculous really.

Then it'd be "Sports Hour".... or just PE 😂😂

Having had 3 kids and 2 grandchildren go through school I've never heard of an hour sports day. That's covering from mid 90s until now

You seem very invested in this thread.

I'm not expecting the school to revolve sports day around me. I said that when it's slap bang in the day, it's hard for working parents to attend. Given the number of parents complaining at the school, I guess I'm not the only one.

Why don't you just go along after lunch, so you can work half a day and still get her at 2pm?

That's what I am doing 😊

You've posted a public forum. People are going to invested. The other reception parents in your school need to get used to it. Things won't change because a few reception parents complain.

PurpleThistle7 · 08/05/2026 17:07

I’ve never heard of a 1 hour sports day either! How does that work? We have 500 kids at our school so just the parents and teacher races are a half hour. Honestly I’d love for it to be an hour long but am grateful it’s just a half day. Many schools around me are full day sports days.

It's not just reception parents 🤣 people in other year groups too.

Not for the whole school, obviously.

They do each year group for one hour on different days.

So because some parents don't want to go to the effort of seeing their kids at sports day, no parents should be invited?

Parents TRY to make the effort. However when schools put 3 hours of Sports Day slap bang in the middle of the day, its hard for parents to attend.

Unfortunately, I'm not a SAHM or have the luxury of 'working from home'.
