Have you been living under a rock? Ever heard of asylum hotels? Free taxis to appointments? Use of all the public services? Dependents following on to come here and use of public services. Do you think that’s costs nothing.

Labour put the end to taxi's (pretty much).

They don't. It's infuriating because SO much valuable has been wasted with this shit (10 years now since the Brexit vote) that could have been used to try to actually engage with the public being lost & make a real effort to understand , make concrete improvements on the ground (and I don't just mean to do with immigration), rebuild trust, improve people's lives & try to pull especially working class voters back from Reform. Which the fingerpointing, sneering "you're all thick and evil" approach has singularly failed to do for all that time and has pushed more voters TO Reform instead, because all it demonstrates to those voters is that they are 100% correct about what the so-called "left" (in truth, mostly very middle class metropolitan establishment) think of the UK working classes or care about what actually goes on in their lives or around them. Slow hand clap.

Yes, Reform are of course fomenting all those divisions for their own ends.Personally, I despise them, think they will do very little for their working class voters in reality, voters who I don't think their leaders care about in reality either. But nor have they created those divisions and gripes out of nothing. Instead, it seems to me, they keep being handed them on a plate by arrogant people who appear to have very little ability to self reflect but assume they are being very intelligent and just have to keep trying to impose unpopular ideas and policies on the public until the public submits. As they should be able to see by now, and to have seen by Trump's second victory in the US, this strategy really is not working. A new tack is required. Calling people stupid and evil really isn't going to change minds or magically make people want to vote for you.

Edited

Sneering liberals warned Brexit couldn’t be a success.

The country got the hardest Brexit available.

It hasn’t been a success.

And ten years later that is the fault of the people who predicted it?

I guess everyone on here being ‘superior’ and saying Reform isn’t going to improve all our lives is going to be to blame when that transpires too.

EvangelinaMae · 08/05/2026 15:24

BIossomtoes · 08/05/2026 14:51

Any money saved - decreasing every day, thanks to reducing the backlog created by the last government - should be used to improve public services and invested in defence. The country can’t afford tax cuts.

What's the point in investing in defence while we're importing god knows who by the thousands 😂😂😂

Reform only have three years anyway, then Restore Britain will sweep the board.

Onmytod24 · 08/05/2026 15:25

Let Reform win as many councils as possible, the shambles that will ensue will mean they will never ever win in a general election.

have often outstayed their welcome

I responded to the fact the other person said 'unknown'.
I know what outstayed their welcome is, but they're not unknown to the authorities. Well, they shouldn't be if the Home Office was up to scratch.

And illegal only means no right to stay, not unknown as the other poster also said.

EarthlyNightshade · 08/05/2026 15:26

southerngirl10 · 08/05/2026 15:13

If they don't get a lot of benefits, they must be making money somehow in order to live. I've not seen many homeless illegal immigrants. Are they taking up jobs that would go to UK residents I wonder?

How would you know if someone was an illegal immigrant?

If they are taking jobs off UK residents, these would have to be UK residents willing to work cash in hand with no employment protection. I wouldn't be encouraging anyone to work in those circumstances.

Nat6999 · 08/05/2026 15:27

Ds won his election for the Green Party, he will be the youngest councillor in Sheffield.

FernandoSor · 08/05/2026 15:27

Happyjoe · 08/05/2026 15:20

Yes, illegal immigrants are either unknown to the authorities, or they are known but their current location is unknown. They greatly outnumber asylum seekers. They are either people who came into the country clandestinely (stowaways on lorries) or people who came here for legitimate reasons (holiday, visiting relatives, business) and never left when their visa ran out.

MikeRafone · 08/05/2026 15:29

Chersfrozenface · 08/05/2026 15:17

The latest jobs figures for the US are out today.

"The US economy created 115,000 jobs in April as businesses kept hiring despite the economic fallout from the US-Israel war in Iran.

The increase was stronger than expected, with the total almost twice as much as economists had forecast.

The data, published by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), also showed the unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.3%."

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx21664lp32o

The University of Michigan’s index of US consumer sentiment has dropped to 48.2 this month, according to a provisional reading, down from April’s 49.8 – which was itself the lowest on record.
An index of ‘current economic conditions’ fell by 9% month-on-month, as people worried that their household finances were under pressure from soaring prices at the pumps.

US consumer confidence hits a record low - so the economy will suffer

Yuasa · 08/05/2026 15:29

Happyjoe · 08/05/2026 15:17

Yes, keep people stupid, makes them keep voting for them!

The idea that university is a waste of time is becoming very mainstream. Universities collapsing isn’t a worry for these voters - just the opposite. Their dislike of data, experts and ‘superiority’ means they’ll applaud anyone taking a wrecking ball to the sector.

Unphased · 08/05/2026 15:29

The majority will be try to claim asylum, they get free housing, meals, £49 as you say, free healthcare, including medical, dental, eye care, maternity benefits and maternity payout, free schooling, free school meals, only costing the taxpayers 6-10 million a day

The only ones who are not known to authorities are the ones smuggled in that are unprocessed.

All the rest will be visa. So apart from the successful ones smuggled in, the authorities know. They know when a students visa runs out. They know when a travel visa runs out, a work visa. They are known to the authorities because they had a visa.

I'm sure plenty of people on here happily pay illegal immigrants to dispose of household waste no questions asked, or do their manicures and waxing, or wash their car.

As long as they don't abolish the NHS - we really are buggered if it's privatised. God help us, as it will be the rich living longer and with health problems can be treated, while the poor live in poverty while they succumb to illnesses.

And yet no other country has an NHS run like ours and many have health systems with much better outcomes.

I thought this was interesting.

Says that harder to bring family members to UK once you have asylum.

They get £49 or free meals and £8 a week. They most definitely don’t get maternity benefits - most of them are men.

Yes, which is why people need to be processed faster, then either removed or, if allowed to stay, working and contributing.

southerngirl10 · 08/05/2026 15:32

KillerWail · 08/05/2026 15:15

Asylum seekers? They get a pittance - £49.18 a week, or £9.95 if they get accommodation. The total number of people who have ever come over on small boats make up 0.29% as a percentage of the UK population as a whole. Please don't believe the billionaire media class who tell you asylum seekers are the problem. Decades of neoliberalism, deregulation / failure to regulate, privatisation and public spending cuts have caused immense wealth inequality. And it's only accelerating with private equity getting a stranglehold over every facet of life. Reform are going to do what the Tories did, but on steroids. Bye bye NHS.

Explain to me how more spending cuts will solve our problems. See if you can persuade me I'm wrong.

How many asylum seekers do know first hand? A relative came to the UK and sought asylum a few years ago. Within a month, they were put into a £1,000 a week care home - free food, free energy bills, free everything. They even managed to save the money from the UK government and send it home, via a family 'friend'. They went to the top of the queue for a needed operation. They get everything free that need from nhs.

They have recently been been placed in a one bedroom flat with a free carer, even though there is a massive waiting list for social accomodation.

They now get full disabled benefits.

They have never worked in this country and maybe they never will. So please don't tell us that asylum seekers only earn £49 per week because it's nonsense. They get MUCH more than that!!

AND, remember we were all told that we have to have paid enough National Insurance to get the full pension. What do think is going to happen to this person. That rule won't apply to them and they definitely won't be thrown out onto the street.

It clearly is to voters and that’s who decides. Even Labour tried to sell in smash the gangs at the last GE.

So misplaced. It isn’t going to address the issues they want it to or are promised.

DrBlackbird · 08/05/2026 15:33

The only positive outcome is there’s time for Reform run councils to blow up before the next GE. Farage as PM is a terrible dystopian vision that I find chilling. There’s only one class that Farage seems to care about and that’s the .01% financial elite. His policies under UKIP focused on deregulation and cutting any kind of employment rights including rolling back min wage etc.

UKIP would put an end to most legislation regarding matters such as weekly working hours, holidays … overtime, redundancy or sick pay etc. and provide a statutory, standard, very short employment contract template …

I wouldn’t envision Reform being much different. Jenrick on the Today programme saying Reform will embrace cryptocurrency the darling of organised crime and terrorism. Not at all influenced by Farage receiving a £5 million ‘donation’.
