To wonder how the hell people are paying for this?!

I have an average car and cost to service it is 525. My home insurance has gone up to 450 and my car insurance is 540 (yes I’ve called round endlessly). I have 18 years no claims.

I am a higher earner. I am going to massively struggle to pay for this. I don’t understand how someone on the average income could afford this? Am I going wrong somewhere? Why am i struggling to make ends meet? How do others do it?

My car requires services to keep it's 7 year warranty, but the service is £400 and that is with an independent mates rates garage! It's £500+ elsewhere, and I've already pushed getting it done.
My car insurance is £700 a year, with 14 years no claims and in a low crime area (this can drive your insurance up!)
So I can believe the numbers OP, and they suck. I don't want to pay to get my car serviced when I could get a friend to do it for a fraction of the cost but because I won't have a silly official piece of paper confirming it was done by an approved garage (basically to force you to use their parts) if my car does go wrong it's not covered on the warranty.

Matildahoney · 07/05/2026 20:44

It's no good just saying it's a Skidya though, a small fabia (or whichever is the smallest) will cost a hell of a lot less than an SUV.
How much you use it, where you live, your age, your job etc etc will all contribute to the price of the insurance.
The service does sound ridiculously high, are you going back to Skoda for it, or just a local garage?

Hereforthecommentz · 07/05/2026 20:48

Shop around, use comparison sites. My car service is £200 don't use a main dealer. Your being ripped off on your car insurance, I pay £27 a month for mine. Home insurance £30.51 a month. Basically pay monthly I don't know many people that pay in a lump sum but also you can get way better prices.

BringBackCatsEyes · 07/05/2026 20:49

I was feeling I was getting a raw deal with my car insurance.
I pay over £400.
So I put my details into Money Saving thingy and while I did find a cheaper quote (though I'm 1/2 way through my existing one so it'll cost to get out of it I should think), I did see this:

  • Average in your region (East of England): £615.75
  • Average for people aged 50-59: £521.90
  • Average for volkswagen golf match tsi bluemotion technology 122: £845.66

So, this thread seems very swayed by people with v low insurance.

I have had 2 no-fault claims which I know increase my premium. I also pay for legal cover and courtesy car as I am a lone parent, living rurally with one car.

AI says UK average is £579.52

RedRiverShore6 · 07/05/2026 20:49

In the old days people just used to change the oil and filter themselves, that the main thing that needs doing

BringBackCatsEyes · 07/05/2026 20:49

It's usually cheaper to pay annually.

Yes, we have stayed in the same house, rather than buy bigger, knowing that retirement will be coming.

My early 20’s son has bought a house in a cheaper area, not a very nice place, but means his mortgage is only £300 per month and he is near work. Allows him to afford his car.
He is single, no children and is saving so that when the time comes he will be able to move.

Most of the adult children who ‘can’t afford to leave home’ are probably blowing most of their wages on high end cars and holidays

inmyhair · 07/05/2026 20:51

I never have my cars serviced and I don't buy home insurance either.

If it helps I dont have a car as live in a city, and have no home insurance.

Who is your post meant to help?

Of course it is but most people can't afford to. Op was saying how can she afford to pay it, well by spreading the cost and paying monthly like most people. (I meant get way better prices in general for her insurance if she shops around)

Should add it’s a major service but still seems excessive and this price is with me having negotiated them down from 630

That is severe. I just paid £195 on a major service

I presume you do not have a mortgage then?

I’m embarrassed I didn’t know I didn’t need to service it!

so could I just ask them to do the oil filter? What about the brake fluid how will I know when it’s due

Are you going to the main dealer or local garage? ATS and Kwik Fit do services too.
Are you doing lots of mileage?

I tend to service mine around 18-24 months but only do about 8000 miles a year.

Ard you using price comparisons for insurance,?

My home insurance - buildings (£1million) and contents (£100k) is about £25/month.

Can't comment on car insurance as I have DC aged 19 on it so has bumped it up.

Have you included all the extras - recovery, legal, protected no claims etc? Have you only insured for the miles you do and removed business if you don't need it?

Anyahyacinth · 07/05/2026 20:55

21 plate skoda ...15 years no claims. Swinton fully comp £178 until Sept 26. Do you renew several weeks out OP? Have a service plan if you use a main dealer?

Christ.

Indeed! Not having home insurance is pure stupidity. It's not like you can just buy another one if it burnt down or had a gas explosion. How ridiculous to risk it for the cost of £30 a month.

Oh I see. I thought you meant you got offered a lower price if you chose to pay monthly, but you mean that there are more offers to choose from. Got it.

The rich get the best deal.....

Where you live affects insurance price been driving 50 years, no accident, 3,000 miles a year but still get charged nearly £600 to insure my 20plus year old car........its a rip off

Your insurance can go down when you’re driving more miles - 3000 miles a year suggests you’re only doing short local journeys which is a higher risk.

askmenow · 07/05/2026 20:57

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it OP, but have you considered changing your job title?
For instance if you were to use the job of "journalist" you would be charged more than many other job titles so just play around with the title.

Also try using the same company to quote on both your house and car insurances. We've found NFU to be excellent.

You need to get it to pass the MOT. This may end up costing in the long run if you don't service regularly, but that's not guaranteed.

Well when your brakes fail you need to top up the brake fluid!
FFS of course you need to have your car serviced. It's not necessary to have it done at a dealership though (unless your warranty is affected).

sakura06 · 07/05/2026 20:59

That’s a lot for a service! I would shop around! You don’t need to use the dealership.

Thechaseison71 · 07/05/2026 21:00

Ilovemyshed · 07/05/2026 19:11

Just to add, I pay £640 per year to tax my car, £550 - £650 to insure £2000 to fill the oil and £750 per year on water.

Edited

Very ouch Mine is £20 a year tax, £310 insurance and ,£195 full service
