AIBU to order a steak while short of money?

First of all this isn't a begging post and I don't want money from anyone.

I'm currently housebound while recovering from a major illness. Just starting to get my appetite back and I have a major craving for a steak. I genuinely can't stop thinking about it. I very rarely eat red meat in general and currently I'm not well enough to cook one by myself so I was planning on ordering one in for my dinner. Only issue is I have a very limited budget and it would leave me a bit short until I get paid next Friday.

Wibu?

when I was very low in iron I craved steaks like I’d never done before . It’s a shame you have no one to cook as I think it would be limp and chewy delivered

AnneLovesGilbert · 07/05/2026 18:42

I’ve never eaten steak, roughly how much does one cost? What will you have to go without?

Butterme · 07/05/2026 19:12

If it’s going to leave you short then of course YABU.

Could you save money anywhere else?

If so then I’d definitely do it (but I’d personally wait and try and go to the pub and eat it freshly made).

Xmasallergies · 07/05/2026 19:18

I get like this when I need iron supplements! Maybe you need a blood test? 🙂

Sprinkleofspice · 07/05/2026 19:32

If the pleasure and pick-me-up that you get from the steak will be greater than the stress you will feel from being short of money then do it. If not then I would wait because it’s not worth it for a piece of meat

I wonder if you are low on iron? I went through a stage of craving steak and spinach when I was low on iron.

I was thinking the exact same... Often cravings have a completely legitimate cause. So have the steak and enjoy it... And get your iron checked . Get well soon🫂

DoomCup · 07/05/2026 19:43

Have the steak OP.

If it's only a few minutes away as opposed to sitting in an insulated Just-Eat bag on the bag of a bike for 45 minutes, I'm sure it'll keep just fine.

How short will you leave yourself? Will you have enough to eat simple meals and any transport costs until you get paid?

ElleJayC · 07/05/2026 19:46

I definitely would if:
-being a bit short doesn’t mean leaving bills unpaid or children not fed etc
-I could guarantee the steak was good as it’s not something that’s often done well by even the nicest pubs and it would be so disappointing

I think I’d probably go for a really nice thick proper burger instead if the pub did one as they’re always cheaper and often nicer so might hit the spot. Ooh I think I’ve given myself a craving now.

Doctor1988 · 07/05/2026 19:54

If it leaves you short I would say no, don’t.

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 07/05/2026 20:01

Get some iron and B12 tablets while you're at it. When you are well enough, ask your gp to get your bloods checked.

N4meChng · 07/05/2026 14:13

Do you think you might be anaemic? I craved steak when pregnant and anaemic? If so, some iron tablets might be a cheaper and better option for now?

I think you'll find Liver, kidney, hearts and other offal will be far cheaper than iron supplements and tastier.

Safarisagoody · 07/05/2026 20:03

If the pub is five mins away it won’t be ruined, in fact it will be better ss it will be rested properly.

how short is short op, can you afford to eat?

youalright · 07/05/2026 20:10

I hope you got your steak and really enjoyed it

Julimia · 07/05/2026 20:13

The decision is yours entirely nothing tondoo with anyone else. A little of what you fancy does you good anyway j

Aldi steaks are nice if you know someone who could get you one

if i had to buy meat i would never buy from Aldi, all of their meat is Halal and i cannot agree with that practice.

Maybe you’re low in iron?

Jesus Christ.

CrayonCritic5 · 07/05/2026 20:57

Yes lovely, you should absolutely get that steak delivered and I hope things pick up for you soon.

sillylittlerabbit · 07/05/2026 21:27

Would a burger hit the spot in a more cost-effective way? Otherwise, I hope you had the steak!

Dogingarden · 07/05/2026 22:10

I ordered the steak!

It was absolutely delicious and totally hit the spot.

Yes, my bills are paid for the month and I have food in (easy stuff like soup)... It just means I'll have to be a bit careful until I get paid.

namechangingeasy · 07/05/2026 22:34

Glad you enjoyed it, get better soon

SonyaLoosemore · 07/05/2026 22:36

Go for it OP but make sure you have a budget for the other days of

low cost meals.

Baffy11 · 07/05/2026 22:36

I am so sorry if I have missed something,.I don't mean to be unkind or facetious. A steak bought from a supermarket (via online delivery/Amazon. ..whatever) would take 2 minutes of frying either side, so 4 minutes in total...is this not an option? I'm perhaps being naive, or maybe don't understand if you're unable, but I'm not understanding why not, and why it has to be a takeaway? Which Will obviously cost more.

Tourmalines · 07/05/2026 22:44

well good you enjoyed it . Nothing wrong with what you did as long as you have all your bills covered and don’t have to ask anyone for a loan to tide you over.

liveforsummer · 07/05/2026 22:52

catipuss · 07/05/2026 14:26

Do it, five minutes resting on the way will be fine, hopefully it comes with all the trimmings!

This was my thoughts. Hopefully they send it out straight away. It needs to rest anyway. The chips/side may be a bit cold but they aren’t the main focus here. As a once off and feeling unwell I’d go for it
