Today, Wales and Scotland are voting for who will govern their National Parliaments and England are voting in their local elections.

I voted this morning and it was super quick. I was in and out in two minutes.

Have you voted yet?

Yes. Hardly anyone there ( more staff than voters), which is surprising as the polling station is right next to the shops & cafes, and they were busy.

Elliania · 07/05/2026 13:54

We've just got back. But tbh all our candiates have been useless. Before we went into the polling booth I couldn't have told you a single name of anyone standing or what their policies were. The only leaflet we had through the door was "a personal message from Nigel Farage" which had nothing to do with local problems or issues and went directly in the bin.

That’s what the surfragettes died for. The privilege of disengaging and moaning from the side lines.

No moaning here. I’m happy with my choice.

Okllln · 07/05/2026 13:57

No and I won’t be as dont have ID

julesover40 · 07/05/2026 13:57

Not yet, bur will be once my work day is done.
Like PP I feel a bit conflicted as to who I give my vote to at the moment, but will be researching the candidates again this afternoon.

AllaMova · 07/05/2026 13:32

Not even to spoil your ballot? At least, then you’d be exercising your right to vote without voting for a particular candidate.

Every ballot is counted.

Spoilt papers don't count for anything so a complete waste of time.

TeenToTwenties · 07/05/2026 13:58

I voted at 7.30am as I was out having dropped DD off at work placement.
'Vote early vote often' Grin

I didn’t bring ID or a polling card to vote. I wasn’t asked for anything at all.

I am in Wales though. I’m not sure if it’s different where you are?

You need ID in England

Yep. People think they are taking some kind of moral protest by spoiling ballots, but nobody cares and they actually count for nothing.

Namingbaba · 07/05/2026 14:00

On way home in train and will vote then.

Just popping this link on in case you genuinely didn’t know that you can apply for free voters ID even if you don’t have the usual passport , driving licence etc . Obviously too late for today , but you can apply now for next time

Apply for photo ID to vote (called a ‘Voter Authority Certificate’)

Apply for photo ID to vote (Voter Authority Certificate) in some elections and referendums in Great Britain if you do not have an accepted form of ID.

bakewelltarty · 07/05/2026 13:42

All these people not voting. You’d all be up in uproar if it was taken away from you 🙄

@bakewelltarty

Not voting doesn't mean people don't want the right to vote; they just want to be able to exercise their freedom either way.

So yes, many would probably be very angry if the right was taken away, but that doesn't in itself conflict with them not voting.

Just like there are women who wouldn't choose to have an abortion themselves, but they are very happy to have the right.

Too much hassle tbh, won’t be bothering anymore.

SorcererGaheris · 07/05/2026 14:04

I did think to myself that if I lived by myself, that around election time I'd seriously consider sticking up a 'Vote Monster Raving Loony Party' placard outside my house. Not because I'd be voting for the, simply for the fun/entertainment value.

SidmyCat · 07/05/2026 14:05

Yes

SusanChurchouse · 07/05/2026 14:07

I will do so after work, in the Scottish Parliament election.

I’m never going to agree with any party 100%. I know elected politicians who disagree with their parties on issues. My local Labour candidate is the only one who has knocked my door and spoken to me and I was quite impressed so she is getting my vote. My list vote may be tactical, I honestly haven’t decided yet.

Aliceinmunsnetland · 07/05/2026 14:07

Batties · 07/05/2026 14:00

Having thought about it, -Batties response to my post- If a paper is spoilt I guess it is a way of showing distain for the parties on the voting paper.
Many people, myself included, feel that none of the parties speak for them, that governments will still mess things up.
Someone on another thread called people who didn't vote 'worthless' me included, that still doesn't make me want to vote, if fact it drives me further away.

godmum56 · 07/05/2026 14:10

postal vote for me too. If you don't vote, or at least deliberately deface your ballot paper, then don't moan.

Burntatbothends · 07/05/2026 14:10

No, haven't had any info from any of those standing, no idea who is standing. Im apathetic these days about elections and think they idea that they make any difference is somewhat illusory. Its all pretty depressing.
Whoever the current lot are they do nothing about the roads, the feral teenagers setting regular fires and killing local wildlife, but we do have some nice mobile speed traps

AgnesX · 07/05/2026 14:11

I always vote, primarily because I believe that if you don't then you've got no right to complain about whatever policies are acted upon, especially on the domestic front. Every individual should play their part.

I also vote because other women fought so that I'd have that right (and want to keep it).

Veiledveritas · 07/05/2026 14:12

@Okllln is your no ID stance some kind of protest?
So strange

Summerhillsquare · 07/05/2026 14:12

Not yet, going over after work. Must keep Deform out.

DaftOpalPoet · 07/05/2026 14:13

Yes, I always do. Reform have been campaigning heavily locally, including a visit by Nigel Farage, and I don't want them running the show.
My daughters also vote as they are well aware that they have been born at a time when they have this right.
