To wear the same basic outfit and not think about clothes anymore

Bedheadbeachbum · 06/05/2026 21:12

So for the last year or so I increasingly don't give a damn about clothing, what to wear, whether it matches, buying new outfits, etc etc. I'm just done with it, honestly do not have the headspace - but I still want to look nice.

Does anyone just wear the same 'outfit' or the same look day to day?

I'm hanging on to a few dressier bits for the extremely rare occasion of going out & dressing up but at the moment I'm gravitating towards a hugely no fuss minimal wardrobe - any inspiration?

Yes, yes I do. Because I'm male, and this is largely how we work.

I own 4 pairs of jeans, and about 15 T-shirts, and 99% of the time my morning routine is to pick one of each at random.

The exceptions are:
Someone important coming to work - Swap t-shirt for polo shirt
Date night that isn't just popping down the pub - Swap t-shirt for one of two shirts (both checked)
Wedding / Funeral - break out the suit for it's yearly airing
Fuck it's hot - Where the hell did I put my shorts

I reckon I spend less time in a year contemplating what to wear, than DP does on an average morning.

I was thinking that this is just the male approach to dressing.

Mark Zuckerberg is known for this. He wears a daily uniform: a grey T-shirt and jeans to reduce decision fatigue. Go for it.

100% feel the decision fatigue. I'd heard that Zuckerburg does it - wonder what famous women wear an 'outfit'.

I have kind of done this my whole life. Once I found a look that suited my body type, I didn't want the headache of trying new things or overcomplicating life with the exception of special occasions.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/05/2026 08:17

Oh dear. This is so depressing. Leggings, jeans, t shirts and identical shirts. No expression of individuality and love of Mark Zuckerberg! I absolutely won’t do this and, for me, fashion is a moving feast! I know what suits me but that can be expressed with variety and I find it a joy, it’s me! I’m not Mrs Boring and my fashion does embrace new ideas. I’m not stuck in skinny jeans and leggings. I don’t know anyone who is so I guess boring dressers stick together?

So your thinking is “I am so wonderful and individual!! I wear what i like and want… if other people wear what they like and want they are boring individuals.. not like me and my fabulous friends!” 🤨

Fraughtmum · 07/05/2026 08:27

Im a 6 foot 67 year old and live in wide trousers and trainers. I own no dresses or skirts. I avoid any formal occasion. We go out to eat every week, lots of gigs and theatre.

basoon · 07/05/2026 08:30

Yes increasingly I only really care about comfortable. I have like what I wear but that's a low bar to be honest.

MrsTrellisOgleddCymru · 07/05/2026 08:33

I tend to wear jeans/T-shirts and walking boots every day, I have a border collie who loves going out! I have exactly 4 dresses, the last time I wore one was at my DDs wedding, nearly 8 years ago! When I want a more feminine look, I stick on a hippy style skirt with flat heeled or wedge shoes. I used to wear heels all the time when younger, but the last time I wore them (DDs wedding again) I was stomping about feeling off balance lol!

Turning 60 this month, I don't give a rats arse about looking fashionable- as long as I'm comfy.

Roystonv · 07/05/2026 08:45

Autumn, Winter and Spring I wear a plain black or navy trouser with coloured long sleeve patterned top with underlayer if cold. Summer much the same but cotton/linen trouser and patterned cotton loose tunic with 3/4 sleeve. Easy, mix and match, appropriate for my age and size, comfortable, inexpensive (though pure cotton getting more expensive and harder to come by). Do have some dresses but mainly for holidays, special occasions - rarely worn.

It's just not my thing anymore. I used to feel a twang of envy about seeing a well put together mum, but honestly I'm done with it. I'm enjoying fashion on others like yourself but I just have no inclination or headspace, other than to have one nice look that works.

@PoppinjayPolly No. Not fabulous at all. Just a bit interested in fashion, dressing appropriately and having a bit of fun! I don’t feel 70 so I’m not dressing in a regimented age related way with no imagination. I guess we make friends with people who are a bit like us!

I have visions of you tottering down the street in ridiculously high stiletto's and the denim shorts on the other thread about first dates😜

Well I am but only because we’ve had a house fire and I can’t work out where to begin with replacing stuff. And it is just stuff.

I’ve got some good basics -
T-shirts and some flattering jeans, some shirts and jumpers. Also two good pairs of leggings. A belt can dress up an outfit. Some trainers and boots for day/evening options.

Go for neutral colours.

The issue I have is now transitioning that to spring/summer. I don’t have any skirts/dresses or shorts yet.

Overall it’s a much simpler way to live, and reduces washing/ironing/putting away. However, six months in and it’s very dull.

T-shirts and some flattering jeans, some shirts and jumpers. Also two good pairs of leggings. A belt can dress up an outfit. Some trainers and boots for day/evening options.

This just seems like a normal wardrobe to me.

Anyone doing the 'one outfit' thing.

Has anyone noticed? Do you get commented on?

I really like Uniqlo for this reason because they tend to have lots of colour options for the same item of clothing.

I have 5 x thin long sleeved tops that I wear under 3 x jumpers in different colour in the winter, with 4x same trousers.

Ogonek · 07/05/2026 10:39

I’m not Mrs Boring and my fashion does embrace new ideas

If I'm boring, so be it. I used to have a 23-inch waist and was slim and lovely and could wear anything. Then endometriosis and menopause hit and the waist vanished and I needed to feel comfortable and not squeeze myself into tight things, so lots of former clothing options were out. I hate my body and don’t recognise it anymore as 'me' so I'm happier not having to put myself through the daily agony of scrutinising myself in the mirror and feeling despair at what’s looking back at me.

I love colour and fabrics and interesting clothes as a concept and am by no means oblivious to any of it, but they don’t actually look good on me any more. My boring uniform suits my purposes very well.

I think these simple dressers are so interesting that they have no need to create a fake 'personality' through clothing.
Our inner light shines brightly but yours needs a bit of a boost maybe?

Well, what you find a ‘joy’ is a mildly tiresome chore to other people.

And it’s not just tech drones who wear a ‘uniform’. Karl Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani, Tom Ford — lots of fashion designers. Fran Lebowitz. Marina Abramovic. Lots of creative types.

sashh · 07/05/2026 10:45

When I was teaching I had a 'uniform' of black linen trousers and the same blouse in 5 different patterns.

Verv · 07/05/2026 11:01

Yes, I've had one outfit for as long as I can remember.

Winter -
Levis (blues/grey/black) and a navy or black hoodie / wool V neck, tan uggs.
Summer -
Levis (blues/grey/black) and a navy, black or white long sleeve t shirt, vans/birkenstock slides.
If its really hot, I wear black or navy linen trousers instead of levis.

I dress casually for work so don't need suits/shirts, I dont wear socks and I dont wear any clothing colours that arent navy black or white.

I do wear different colour vans though.

When you say the same outfit do you mean the exactly the same outfit?
My day to day for nearly all weather outfit is combo of jeans, I have two pairs the same style but different colours, and one pair a different style, a t-shirt or vest either black white or grey all Uniqlo, and if it’s cold one of four cashmere jumpers, or a sweatshirt (I have three) or a shirt either white or striped cotton or a denim one. I’ve got three trench coats two long and one short as well as a wool coat, a big duvet coat and a waterproof parka.
If it’s really hot I wear a long t-shirt dress or a maxi skirt and a t-shirt.

Ragamuffin8 · 07/05/2026 11:50

I do this for autumn/winter - black/grey trousers or indigo jeans and a cashmere jumper. A variation of that everyday.

Haven’t figured out my summer look yet…

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/05/2026 11:52

Fashion designers tend to dress to sell their brand ethos. It’s that simple. It’s marketing. Ordinary people are not selling their multi $ billion brands!

NFunny · 07/05/2026 11:56

I love style and fashion and choosing outfits gives me great pleasure.

But if you don’t love fashion, then why not?! I can def see the appeal of simplicity.
