The met gala…. I can’t get over how self indulged these celebrities are!

80% of you look ridiculous in your ‘high’ fashion outfits!

I absolutely LOVED Hugh Grants interview…
”what are you wearing???…... ‘a suit’

It's a revolting spectacle, honestly. The vanity, wealth and privilege on display. It's like the last days of Absolute Monarchy or the Capitol in The Hunger Games.

Vive la révolution!

Yes absolutely this. With all that's going on in the world this spectacle is so tone deaf and rather revolting

The gala raises money for the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It supports the preservation of cultural history. It keeps curators and experts employed. The ways that people have dressed across time tells us about lots of other aspects of history. It's not for nothing.

Yes, the outfits are expensive and some are a little bit ridiculous. But most of the people involved in making them were paid a decent wage, because they were made by couture houses. There was likely very little wasted materials and many will be preserved in collections, or sold on. The best are a great display of creativity and imagination that I enjoy looking at! I couldn't come up with those kinds of designs, and I definitely couldn't execute them, and I'm pleased someone can. I also probably couldn't wear the clothes with as much charisma as the celebrities do. Entertainment is part of life, and people who provide it can be rewarded.

None of this disgusts me as much as manufactures making tons of cheap, poor quality clothing from oil-based fabrics, that will be worn once or twice and then sent to landfill, or will never be sold or worn, and end up in a huge pile somewhere where the Western buyers of the clothes can't see them.

Maybe the Bezos et al could just pay proper taxes and then maybe we could fund museums etc that way?

Whiteheadhouse · 07/05/2026 19:05

Absolutely hideous.

Pliudev · 07/05/2026 19:13

I think it's funny. I assume those invited are in on the joke and don't mind looking ridiculous. One serious question though: how do some of them sit down or is it standing only?

Goinggonegone · 07/05/2026 19:15

Slebs gonna sleb.

Uricon2 · 07/05/2026 19:15

I don't really follow it but thought Heidi Klum as a 'living statue' (actually a copy of the Bride/Veiled Lady marble at Chatsworth) at least entered into the spirit. Lauren Sanchez attempt at the portrait of Madame X fell very short. Nicole Kidman going as a colour, umm.

At least this year didn't feature Kim K trying to squeeze her backside into a dress of importance in fashion history, that neither fitted nor suited her.

It's all a load of indulgent and increasingly tacky nonsense so hope it does raise money for something worthwhile, although I agree with the comments about Bezos and taxes.

I don't think anything has summed up the modern left better than her wearing that dress.

It said 'Tax The Rich' while she was eating at a table that cost $275,000 to book, and everything from the dress to her table was paid for by her uber capitalist sponsors.

She was protesting the 1% doncha know.

Someone did the maths and put her in the 1.2%

😂😂😂

Needmorelego · 06/05/2026 12:41

Yep 😁
Definitely not just you.
I thought they looked awesome (except for Hudson's after party outfit 😂)

You didn’t think his slutty little shorts looked awesome?

mondaytosunday · 07/05/2026 19:59

Come on now. These outfits aren’t whisked up by a fairy godmother. They are the results of hours of work, often by hand. And who does this work? Talented and skilled men and women who need paying and fantastic that their skills are still in use. It’s like expensive weddings - they aren’t burning the money, they are giving loads of people employment!

I liked his beret hat 😁
The double socks looked very odd.
It was an interesting outfit but from what I have learned about Hudson Williams over the last few weeks it's very much his style.

Really?

I find it symbolic of the world we live in. Decadence and self indulgence for the privileged while the vast majority have to live with poverty, starvation, disease, exploitation and war.

It's a sick world we have created.

This.

This comes up every year. It’s a fancy dress party. It’s not meant to be sensible clothing or even fashion, it’s a fundraiser and intended to be entirely OTT. Fashion houses pay to get their creations into the newspapers, celebs like being photographed, the museum gets lots of money, everyone wins. To be honest I find those that just turn up in a suit more “self indulgent” as it’s a statement of “I’m so important / rich I don’t even need to make an effort to be here”

Yes and it’s also important to point out that the Met museum operates a ‘pay what you wish’ ticket system for local residents to enter, and the money raised at the gala helps with that.

I didn’t watch it - zero interest TBH - but there are plenty of photos in today’s Times. The ones I’ve seen are - to me anyway - vulgar, or ridiculous, or just blatantly attention-seeking. Or all three.

I dare say there were some beautiful, elegant, classy dresses, but unsurprisingly I haven’t seen any publicity about those.

I agree.

Parading as " Fashion in Art". My arse!

But that was the theme 🤷

GivingUpGivingIn · 08/05/2026 06:40

<Louis Walsh voice> I liked it.

A bit of escapism.

And a fascinating visual quiz for those who know their art history, or want to know more.

They didn't choose the obvious (like RuPaul art categories do and a fake A.I. insta did) so fortunately, someone cleverer than I, did side-by-sides and I find that interesting and enlightening (DC is doing art this year).

It also amused me that YSP got in on the act and compared their own statues with some of the attendees (even though the outfits were inspired by other pieces, it was still quite a clever marketing strategy).

Excellent comment. I find the Met Gala self-indulgent, but anyone buying cheap rubbish from Shein is far worse.

wecangoupupup · 06/05/2026 10:35

That’s the point? The theme was “fashion is art”, each year they have a theme where they get to dress up and have fun, while raising a huge amount of money for Metropolitan Museum of Art, which keeps it free to access for everyone.

Have you been to NY recently? The museum is not free.

Needmorelego · 08/05/2026 07:27

Teaforthetotal · 08/05/2026 07:12

It's "Pay-What-You-Wish" for locals.
So technically they could pay 1 cent and get in.
So presumably some of the funding goes towards that.

Perrygreen · 08/05/2026 07:35

It's meant to be self-indulgent and a bit mad. It's not the tasteful, perfect, boring Oscars red carpet.

I loved Madonnas costume with the late Isabella Blows Philip Treacy hat. Beyonce's dress was amazing too, apparently it was based on a 1940's Creole painting.

Notmyreality · 08/05/2026 07:46

Yes,
but that’s the point surely?

ForQuirkyFawn · 08/05/2026 07:50

Isn't that the point??

T1Dmama · 08/05/2026 09:52

I’ve never watched it and truly have no interest in celebrities, they often get paid so much just for being good at their chosen job… and I feel it’s wrong because all jobs are important and lots of people are outstanding at their jobs and on minimum wage!
But the whole point of the gala is for these celebrities to ‘peacock’, the more outrageous the more publicity …. I seem to remember last year Will Smiths kids wore a chimney ?! But look they’re remembered for it so it worked!!

lilkitten · 08/05/2026 14:20

That's its USP. TBF I find it interesting to look at the outfits as a spectacle, but I think it's always been this kind of show.
