Aibu to consider getting a cleaner with 2 days off work?

Reposted sorry as title didn't appear!

Aibu to consider getting a cleaner? I work part time, have 2 days off. I have 3 kids all are now in school. My husband works long hours and I do all domestic chores, all pick ups drop offs, cooking, the mental load of what kids need etc seeing to there needs mainly myself during the week due to long hours husband works. I do not expect my husband to do more due to how we have split responsibilities across everything so not asking for input regarding this. I have a large house 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, 2 sitting rooms. I am considering getting a cleaner as I feel exhausted, thinking I would be a better person for it at home and it would give me some breathing space. Aibu to do this considering I have 2 days off? I wouldn't give everything to the cleaner to do just things like bathrooms, and some of the floors bit of dusting so would still be doing some stuff myself. Anyone got any experience of having one in this situation? Anyone who has cleaners do partial cleaning? How did it improve your life if so?

Have you seen a doctor? Most people work 5 days a week, bring kids up and manage a household. It's quite worrying that you're so exhausted. I would go and see your doctor to get some tests done, it isn't normal to be exhausted when you only work 3 days and have a husband to share the load with. Hope you are OK!

Really!
I am retired, and we have a cleaner!! Life is too short. If you can afford it, do it.

I have 365 days a year off work, and have a cleaner plus an ironing lady who picks up our dirty clothes and brings them back ironed.

If you can afford it do it!

It's 2 days off in the week and the weekend off too. 1 day weekend is mostly taken up with kids activities, the other helping them with homework some family time and prep for the week

There are only two questions you need to answer:

  1. do I want a cleaner?
  2. can I afford a cleaner?

If the answer to 1 and 2 is “yes” then you get a cleaner. Everything else is irrelevant. You have no need to justify yourself, just get the cleaner.

Ritaskitchen · 05/05/2026 12:59

I voted wrong. YANBU. Go for it.

Oh get over yourself.

If you want to be a martyr, go right ahead and be a martyr. Meanwhile anyone who can afford to pay for help and wants that help will buy that help and improve their quality of life as a result.

Im retired and have a cleaner - i could do it but would rather be doing other things, why not?

IWaffleAlot · 05/05/2026 13:02

Do it if you can afford it. I’m a sahm now and I have a cleaner 2x per week. My time is much better spent doing other things. I am someone who absolutely cannot function at all if my house is untidy or needs a clean. I tidy quickly daily and my cleaner deep cleans on the days she is here every week.

Exactly this.

Theolittle · 05/05/2026 13:03

Fine if you can afford it. If you have lots of debt, or haven’t put into a pension (especially being part time), sort those before getting a cleaner

Inthesensethat · 05/05/2026 13:03

Even my small one bed flat seems to take up almost one of my week end days to keep on top of. If you can afford it, absolutely go for it! Plus you're also giving someone else more work, so win win:)

Velumental · 05/05/2026 13:06

My child free time amounts to 1 hour on a Tuesday and 2.5 hours on a Thursday when they are in school and pre school. Other weekdays I work and we're both off the weekend. I want to see how it feels when both are in school as I'll then have 9-3 on 1 day and 3 hours on the other so I may feel more on top of things. It's currently organising and tidying I struggle with so can't even get to the point where a cleaner would help..anyway, get the cleaner if you can afford it, enjoy your life

44PumpLane · 05/05/2026 13:08

If you can afford it then go for it.

Another option would be to consider investing in some automation- would a good robovac & mop be useful for example- every night you'd stick it on and wake up the next morning with hoovered and mopped floors.

Although I'm yet to find bathroom cleaning automation!

Oh dear, this disingenuous concern is so dull. Enjoy your martyrdom; I certainly won’t be competing for whatever prize it is you think you’ll get.

But she doesn't really have a husband to share most of the load with. Financial, yes. But nit physical and not largely mental. Of course it's worth considering if she's more exhausted than she used to be etc. but if she's busy with work 3 days, family and childcare two days and then is using the last two days to do all the housework, doing all school runs and night time wake ups, I'm not overly surprised she's tired.

If you can afford it and you want to get a cleaner why not?
It shouldn't be a moral issue but a financial one.

blankcanvas3 · 05/05/2026 13:28

I don’t work at all and I have a cleaner, so go for it

Oh I totally agree, nothing wrong with getting a cleaner. I have one. If you have a cleaner because you don't have time or can't be bothered or whatever reason that's nobody else's business. But that's irrelevant to my point. If you are 'exhausted' but only working 3 days a week, there's a health issue there.

NailsForChristmas · 05/05/2026 13:37

The answer is ALWAYS get the cleaner (assuming it is affordable).

Between my husband and I, we work only 4 days each so equivalent to you. We have a cleaner and a lawnmower person. If I could afford a gardener we would have one, but alas, so we have a jungle garden.

Can you afford it without affecting other areas of life financially? If yes do it!

And also consider --- are there other areas of life where the money would be better spent?

Empress13 · 05/05/2026 13:40

💯 get a cleaner why ever not?

FlapperFlamingo · 05/05/2026 13:41

If you can afford it then get a cleaner. It doesn't matter if you work 2 days, 4 days or no days! I am retired and have a cleaner every week who does an amazing job. You don't need permission provided you have the £.

Hmmm. Somebody's got this wrong! I have a cleaner, I've had one for 20+ years. I also have a gardener and someone to do my ironing. Life's way too short to do all that shit. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

It's a pretty sad state of affairs when you assume someone showing concern is not real. Some of us are actually human beings.

Two days off total or in addition to a weekend off, so 4 days off?

There's always one!!

I work three days and we have a cleaner! And zero guilt about it. I want to spend my time off doing stuff I actually want to do.
