I don't like bank holidays either when they aren't for a specific purpose like Christmas. I'd rather have the time added to my leave allowance and be allowed to take leave when I want to, rather than when the government tells me to and everywhere is busy (and if you stay at home everyone is mowing their bloody lawns).

It doesn't affect me because I work part-time across every day but if you work specific days the bank holidays mean you get less leave you can choose, too. I know it's the same as the full-timers but it feels like it has more of an impact on part-time workers.

You can buy a t shirt cos shops are open but two of our local chemists are shut for 3 days as they arent open weekends Priorities eh!

Yes that's another good point. Don't be ill because GPs and pharmacies are closed and there won't be any operations or outpatients except for emergencies, too.

You wasting the day is down to you

YABU to think bank holidays are annoying, when it's your behaviour that annoys you

Your not always in complete control of how you end up feeling each day.

You can't always do something fun.. even if you wanted to.

Thanks for the insight!

They make me feel sad. Don’t know why.

UniquePinkSwan · 04/05/2026 18:58

I didn’t even realise it was a bank holiday today until I was driving to work and wondering why the roads were quiet

2chocolateoranges · 04/05/2026 18:58

I love a holiday Monday.
Ds went to work, dd went to library to study, dh went to work, I had a lazy morning, met my mum for lunch and a bit of shopping and that’s as productive as I’ve been!

Roll on the next one!

And lower paid workers like supermarket workers who have get taxis there and back because the buses arent running.

Morepositivemum · 04/05/2026 19:00

Retail and I worked long hours Saturday and Sunday (our company can be mean like this on bank holidays😅) but enjoyed today- first half cleaning and running about, but now eating a fry up for dinner and thrilled I didn’t have to do school runs etc!!

Popped to town, saw my mum, went to the garden centre, did some planting up in the garden, sorted through my clothes. I spent most of yesterday doom scrolling and felt shit for it so was determined not to do the same today.

At least the garden centres and DIY places were allowed to open today, unlike Easter Sunday. Although that's down to the Sunday trading laws rather than bank holidays. But given lots of people like gardening and pottering around their houses, why on earth wouldn't you allow relevant shops to open?

(and before someone says so they can go to church- well yes but then why are leisure centres, and theme parks, and cafes, and smaller shops allowed to open?)

Sorry slightly off-topic!

I went into town to buy an anniversary card for DH as it’s our anniversary tomorrow and didn’t even think about the fact of the card shop being closed. Managed to get one elsewhere but paid over a fiver for a rather normal looking card.

Enjoying it now though as we’re in a pub watching bank holiday footy. 😁

I agree!
I definitely woke up to people doing stuff in their gardens.
Even when I was younger I didnt often have interesting.. plans. It was just nice to stay up really late.

personally I had a fab day.

if you feel as if you've wasted the day that as on you. its well known that the first Monday in may is a bank holiday, you could have organised something in advance but clearly decided not to, thats on you and no-one else

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/05/2026 19:08

I am self employed so it’s a working day for me, DC went to school.

Trust me, I know that. I have health issues.

i had planned to go to the May Fayre, just down the road in my village, I love seeing the children enjoying themselves on the rides & entering the dog show & the other events & stalls. I've been looking forward to it. Yes. My life is that small since I became disabled that it was something to look forward to.

...but I wasn't up to it. At all. I'm supposed to be at a quiz tonight but had to pull
out as I've had an upset stomach (due to medication).

But that's my health issues, I'm not being a misery about Bank Holidays..

Maybe its because we didn't choose the day.
Or if your not having a great/ lovely day, you can feel slightly negative.

I find this Bank Holiday annoying, because it's so close to Easter and the late May holiday, especially when Easter is late. I used to do something that happened on Mondays and at this time of year it felt we were forever stopping and starting because of the Bank Holidays.

Last Monday in October might be a good alternative. Coincides with half term, weather is often still good, might give the holiday trade a late boost, and it breaks up the time between August and Christmas.

LlynTegid · 04/05/2026 19:14

It would have been Friday if Mrs Thatcher hadn't moved it, given the idea of May 1st was to celebrate international workers day.

We have few enough public holidays as it is in the UK. I think there should be one to remember those who died in war.

I got to spend the day in my garden with my 2 children instead of the 55 I usually spend Mondays with. And I got a lie in! I very much enjoyed my bank holiday!
