AIBU to share a hotel room with my adult children?

I have been divorced for over 20 years and have had no interest in finding another partner. I occasionally go on holiday with my adult children, DD27 and DS25. We sometimes stay in Airbnbs and sometimes in hotels. AIBU to share a hotel room with them? We each have separate single beds and each get changed and washed in the bathroom with the door closed. I can afford to pay to take them away (I like 5* hotels which my DC couldn’t afford to pay for themselves) but I couldn’t afford to pay for multiple rooms. Everyone is happy with the arrangement. AIBU?

How can you possibly be being unreasonable if everyone staying in the room is happy with it?

Nothing unreasonable about it. Although if you're able to afford actual 5 star hotels, I would have thought you'd all prefer the comfort and space of multiple rooms or a suite in a 4 star hotel.
Perhaps you mean hotels with a 5 star rating on booking.com or similar?

Eh, this is just a personal view. It’s a case of each to their own!
I did this as a young adult with my brother and parents when they treated us to a big USA trip.
Some nights we wanted the fancy place so we squeezed in together and other hotels we had more room but I shared with my brother everywhere. We were just happy to be there. So long as everyone is comfortable with it, I don’t see the issue.

I’m 38 and married with kids, and would still happily share a room, an even a double bed, with my mum if we went away together. Can’t think of any reason that would be an issue. Most of the world share sleeping spaces with their family.

The worst holiday I ever had was with my Mum, who had kindly paid for it, but we were sharing a small double bed. I have insomnia and don't share a bed with my DH. My mother snored.

I have never had such a miserable week in my life, even though we were staying in paradise.

BitOutOfPractice · 04/05/2026 18:15

Who has told you it’s U?

CloudyBayPlease · 04/05/2026 18:15

I can’t see anything wrong with it. I’d not do it as I’d want my own space, and especially my own bathroom.

Justploddingonandon · 04/05/2026 18:29

Perfectly fine, but where do you find hotels that have 3 single beds suitable for adults? Most I’ve found that’ll sleep more than two adults are two queen beds or similar.

amigafan2003 · 04/05/2026 19:10

Sounds fine, we often share a room with our adult offspring when we go snowboarding.

herbalteabag · 04/05/2026 19:16

I share a room with my 18 year old son whenever we are away. It's fine as long as there are separate beds, although one is sometimes a sofa bed which he does not like! It's uncommon to see 3 single beds in a room though. But if they are late 20s they might choose to pay towards it and get more than one room?

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 04/05/2026 19:19

Whoever told you it’s weird is weird (maybe jealous) themselves. You’d share with a friend so what’s the issue. Bizarre.

Why would you need your own bathroom?

Coconutter24 · 04/05/2026 19:23

Why are you asking us if YABU when you say everyone is happy with the arrangement? The people going are ok with it so our opinions don’t really matter

Pineapplewhip · 04/05/2026 19:25

I'd find it weird going on a trip with my mum and not sharing a hotel room with a separate bed?

Beetlejuice3 · 04/05/2026 19:26

I go to watch the F1 with my dad and as you can imagine hotels near tracks on race weekends are ridiculous prices. Always share and not weird at all. Like you say, we just have our own bathroom time.
Besides, on holiday I assume you don’t sit in your hotel room a great deal so really seems silly to book more rooms if everyone is ok with the arrangement

I have shared hotels with my mum when we away together just us. Do not see why we wouldnt.

Only had an issue once where the hotel for some reason thought frosted glass doors were private enough. They were not.

My adult god daughter & I often travelled together. We went to the Christmas Markets in Germany & the bathroom was frosted glass walls, might as well not have had walls 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

@parasolnotumbrella I'm 57 & share a room with my mum because she wants me to, she wouldn't sleep in a hotel room on her own (she's fine in an Air BnB)

who has said something negative?

Rightsraptor · 04/05/2026 19:31

I don't see the issue either.

But I have noticed how many hotels no longer seem to have single beds/twin beds. They all seem to have one king size bed. Sharing a room is one thing, sharing a bed is quite another.

Plot twist... It's their father posting.

There's been some weird posts of late on the step/father theme.

What?

sadly my Dad died, but I'd happily spent years sharing a room with him when we went skiing.

i would have rather shared a bed with him than my mum too. 💁🏻‍♀️

Scarlettpixie · 04/05/2026 19:35

I share a room with my adult DS when we stay in hotels. We book a twin and change in the bathroom. What’s the problem?

TheChosenTwo · 04/05/2026 19:35

If everyone is happy with it I can’t understand why you’ve started the thread?!
I like my own space so wouldn’t share with my dc and haven’t since they were about 3 on holiday, they have their own and dh and I have our own space. When I go away with friends they are happy to save money and bunk in with each other. I pay more to have my own. I sleep naked in the pitch black. Added to this I don’t sleep well at all and tend to fall asleep around 1, wake again at 4 and and quite fidgety before and after. Best for everyone if I have my own space. Dh is used to me and doesn’t get disturbed 😂

VerbenaGirl · 04/05/2026 19:36

I’m happy sharing with my Mum, and sharing with my adult children. I think it’s a bit weird to think it’s weird.

I'd only share with a friend of the same sex, unless there was no other option.

Yes, in some hotels the only way to get the equivalent of a twin is to book a family room and somebody sleeps in the child's bed.

previouslyknownas · 04/05/2026 19:41

I’ve taken my son on many holidays when he was a young teen and young adult
Vegas Miami Thailand New York & lots of holidays to Europe

always shared a room with him but we do get double twin beds as no way am I sleeping in a single bed 😂

When he was in his twenties he liked the free luxury holidays that he wouldn’t be able to afford

and all it ever cost him was to take me out for a meal one time while on holiday to The CheeseCake Factory 😂

OMGitsnotgood · 04/05/2026 19:43

I’d personally prefer not to share a bedroom, so in the same situation would look for an apartment with multiple rooms. But there’s no fundamental issue with it if it works for you all

Well of course, but your son is different to a male friend!

rwalker · 04/05/2026 19:49

there was a bedroom ,sofa bed and day bed
So bed each
in the morning we were all 3 of us sat up in sofa bed having bacon sandwich and a brew for breakfast like when they were kids
