To think that we can’t put up with the smell of dead mice for weeks on end?

2 weeks ago, I thought there was something wrong with the drains as it smelt like something had died. We called out Thames Water and all the drains in the road were clear and then our next door neighbours (terraced house) said they had discovered they had a mouse problem and they had called out pest control and the mice had died under the floorboards.

The house and everything in it absolutely stinks and on top of that, we now have a house absolutely full of massive, fat, juicy flies that are clearly feasting on the dead bodies.

I’ve bought some neutradol. And left out bowls of bicarbonate of soda but short of burning the entire house down is there anything else we can do? The house smells disgusting!

The smell doesn't last as long as you think it will! Plug in essential oil diffusers, open windows everywhere you can, small bowls of fresh ground coffee dotted about (this is odd but it works well) and lush bath bombs lying around the house helped us

These are great, we had dead rats under floorboards and we got a few of these (although I also had to move out for a couple of weeks to an Airbnb for the worst of it). Long story. When the flies came later we got one of those electric fly swatters (quite satisfying!) and covers for food. Very stressful though I really sympathise.

Booooooooom · 01/05/2026 19:26

Thanks, I am exploring all these options!

It takes about 3 weeks for them to fully decompose on average then the smell leaves. It is vile. I’m still traumatised from a rat infestation.

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 01/05/2026 19:32

You need Oust spray, brilliant stuff for exactly this issue.

might try that tomorrow with all the windows open - rather annoyingly it’s in the hallway so not a lot of through air if you know what I mean

Coffee grounds really helps

PurpleLovecats · 01/05/2026 20:00

Disagree that mice don’t smell when dead. I was sitting in the lounge with my son and husband this week and my son and I could smell something off.
It was a dead mouse behind the sofa courtesy of our cat .

It really stank!

Kingdomofsleep · 01/05/2026 18:43

The problem is, if it's mice, they breed so quickly and then you're overrun and they start coming into living areas like even your bed. I know this from awful bitter experience

It’s been about two years. I think it’s a squirrel. They come seasonally have babies and leave. Bit concerning for the electrics. But so far it’s been ok 😬

Notmyreality · 01/05/2026 21:58

We had this. Unless you are prepared to tear your house apart you just have to wait it out I’m afraid. Took about 3 weeks for the smell to stop.

Dalmationday · 01/05/2026 22:03

no advice other than to go on holiday for a week or two leaving some strategic windows open

justasking111 · 01/05/2026 22:09

Awful smell in the bedroom once found a dead mouse under the bed. Thanks cat!! Even when I got rid of the body cleaned the carpet there was a whiff for a couple of weeks.

HiCandles · 01/05/2026 22:35

Timely thread for me. We have been ignoring the mouse living under the freezer hoping one of us would catch it, which we do average twice a week thanks to darling cats. Well no luck this time. The unmistakable sickly sweet smell of dead mouse warming through in the freezer machinery filled the air and I have spent my Friday evening cleaning his stash of mouldy stolen cat biscuits, excrement (turns out mice are tidy, all the poo was in one area oh so conveniently practically impossible to get to and full of nooks and crannies), and his little solid warm body drying against the hot thing under the freezer.
I'd be ripping up floorboards too, OP! The amount of mouse poo and wee will shock you.

Booooooooom · 09/05/2026 07:39

Got pest man out again as the smell was horrific so he found a way to pull up the floorboards and cleared the dead bodies. He said they were definitely mice but he’s also concerned he saw rat droppings. Next door are still away on holiday and we are trying to figure out how the rat is getting in so he’s left non poisonous bait near the drain and if that’s not it, the rat is also coming from next door. God knows what they’ve been doing to attract all these vermin!

Purplewarrior · 09/05/2026 07:41

Are they bird feeders?

Booooooooom · 09/05/2026 07:44

No but they also haven’t maintained their house that well so I’m wondering if it’s just easy for the animals to get in if you see what I mean. I got the bloke yesterday to block all the holes around our pipes etc.

We also have a dog and lots of people have cats but they have no pets so I’m wondering if their house is just an easier target

I got some of these and were amazing at removing the smell

The flies were gross though and killed quickly with zoflora spray

Thanks @kshaw they look great - now I know how to lift the floorboards, those look perfect to put underneath!

Dead mice smell of a gas leak. I have much experience of this. Takes a few days to clear. Less with windows open.
Even dead rat smell doesn't linger too long.

They must be getting in from somewhere. If you know they're sometimes not there go and try and fill any holes with wire wool or filler.

My neighbour had squirrels and they're so noisy!

spiderlight · 09/05/2026 10:11

We had a mouse die in the cavity wall behind our bathroom a few years back. The smell was beyond belief (we initially thought our toilet was leaking!) but I dropped one of those sachets into the cavity from the loft and it worked really well.

Our roof is insane. We have 7 different roof zones/ each with multiple peaks, troughs, gulleys (I don’t know all the roof words). It’s not even a can of worms I am opening. 😅

Crikey! Mines pretty weird in that I have a gutter running directly through my house from front to back, inside the loft?! 😄
