To think that we can’t put up with the smell of dead mice for weeks on end?

2 weeks ago, I thought there was something wrong with the drains as it smelt like something had died. We called out Thames Water and all the drains in the road were clear and then our next door neighbours (terraced house) said they had discovered they had a mouse problem and they had called out pest control and the mice had died under the floorboards.

The house and everything in it absolutely stinks and on top of that, we now have a house absolutely full of massive, fat, juicy flies that are clearly feasting on the dead bodies.

I’ve bought some neutradol. And left out bowls of bicarbonate of soda but short of burning the entire house down is there anything else we can do? The house smells disgusting!

Dead mice don't tend to smell that much. My guess is it's rats or squirrels.

Sorry, not helpful I know.

We had a dead squirrel caught in a trap when on holiday and came back to the smell. We opened all the windows, day and night (unless out) and lit candles in every room.

Booooooooom · 01/05/2026 18:29

Their pest man left out poison (we have a dog so haven’t done this) and apparently the mice ate it all and are now dying under the floorboards

You can also get a can of high strength air sanitiser than you set off like a bomb (pest control got us one). I can't remember what they're called but they're a green canister and you get it on amazon. You have to shut the windows and not let any kids or pets into that room for several hours, do a room at a time.

Booooooooom · 01/05/2026 18:30

might try that tomorrow with all the windows open - rather annoyingly it’s in the hallway so not a lot of through air if you know what I mean

It'll be rats I reckon. We had a mice problem years ago and had literally dozens of them (it was so bad). They didn't smell when they died

Booooooooom · 01/05/2026 18:30

Thanks - that was a response to your first post. At this point, I would quite happily set off a real bomb 😂

Thanks that’s brilliant - I’m contemplating actually pulling up the floorboards this weekend to get to the bodies

Having had the odd dead mouse in the house (have cats) they can smell awful.
Not terribly helpful - but if you have got flies, then the mouse corpse is feeding maggots and once the flesh is eaten up the smell will go.

I used to work in a very old school and the stench of a couple of dead mice was horrendous.

Blahblahblahabla · 01/05/2026 18:40

We have something in our attic. This is part of the reason I am like just live there whatever 😅

Better than dead rotting corpses.

The problem is, if it's mice, they breed so quickly and then you're overrun and they start coming into living areas like even your bed. I know this from awful bitter experience

Goldfisher · 01/05/2026 18:46

Yes, don’t believe all those saying dead mice don’t smell. An old work place had a mouse problem and the smell of them decomposing was absolutely horrific. We had a pest controller coming in regularly and it was definitely just mice.

countrygirl99 · 01/05/2026 18:50

If they die over hot water pipes the stench can be awful, even from just one mouse. DH's uncle ended up pulling up half the floorboards in their large lounge trying to find the source of a dreadful stink and it was a single mouse draped over a pipe

Booooooooom · 01/05/2026 18:51

Arghhhhh!

yes this is near pipes too - maybe that’s why the smell is so bad

I think it’s a weekend of DIY for me - I’m not sure how much longer I can stand it

You could try an air purifier with a hepa filter, some of the good ones are great at taking bad smells down. If you look at the reviews, some of them mention getting rid of thesmell of cigarette smoke etc

Booooooooom · 01/05/2026 18:58

Thanks we do have air purifiers so I might stick one in the hall. The flies are horrendous - I’ve had to cover any food and every time you sit down they try and sit on you

We've had a dead rat under the floorboards and the smell was grim 😩 I did end up ripping up the floorboards to get it out as I couldn't stand it! We also had one eat poison and then chew it's way into the wall cavity and die - council rat man said they often do that unfortunately 😕 we just had to wait for the smell to go, I had neutrodol air fresheners everywhere and we avoided being in that room as much as possible. I think it was a couple of weeks before it cleared completely.

AelinAG · 01/05/2026 19:03

This happens to us regularly because our attics are connected to our neighbours who are consistently overrun (filthy creatures).

I can recommend Spanish cleaning products, the raspberry kind of smells. Bowls of cat litter which seem to absorb the smell. A humidifier with tea tree oil in it. If you know exactly where the corpses are, a strategically placed humidifier can help speed the smelly, gooey part of decomp.

PseudokuPuzzle · 01/05/2026 19:03

I feel your pain, we had a totally different smell problem from an undisclosed box of defrosting chicken that had been left in a switched off fridge (thanks teen)
You could smell it from two doors away.
My neighbour suggested one of those catalytic lamps. I think there are various manufacturers but the one I got is a Berger. They were used in hospitals in days of yore,
It really does work, especially on decomposition smells 😵‍💫

Oh they do!
We have the double whammy of dead mice in the house and and the car.
No advice, but watching other responses with interest...

nutsfornuts · 01/05/2026 19:05

I know this probably isn’t much consolation but they don’t smell forever. The bodies dry out and stop smelling after a couple of weeks 🫣

The mice we had certainly smelled horrendous!

gamerchick · 01/05/2026 19:07

I disagree that it's not mice tbh. When my snake regurgitates a mouse that one mouse lifts the air if I haven't noticed. A lot of mice would stink to high heaven.

Unfortunately, this is what happens when you use poison. The smell will go in a week or so.
