What phrases do you hate? It gives me the rage when my mum says put up and shut up. I know that some things are not within my control and that i have to do things i don't like.

I have thought of more

.We were intimate. No, you had sex, piss off with the flowery shite
.Baba, its baby!
.Yummy
.Tummy
.Shock, horror... fuck off
.Food noise... you mean hunger??

Not a phrase but people that irrelevantly add that their kids' neurodivergent when mentioning anything to do with em

That conjured up an image of a woman smuggly grinning whilst rubbing her "tummy" argh!

Jim jams? 🤣

I have to admit to encouraging my children to go and put on their jamaramas, and get ready for bed. This was in the 80s though.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 02/05/2026 15:09

Done wrong - I've hated this one since I was a child, it's like fingernails on a blackboard to me for some reason.

People referring to their own family as 'the family' like they're in The Godfather.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 02/05/2026 15:12

“We’re making data driven decisions”, Said whilst simultaneously ignoring the data they don’t like, and not making the decision it is clearly indicating needs to be made

Very much relate to that one! 😂

Diamond7272 · 02/05/2026 15:13

"you need to cut your suit according to your cloth.."

Always said by older people who have inherited many hundreds of thousands and haven't worked since they 'retired' after having children...

Livpool · 02/05/2026 16:07

UnctuousUnicorns · 02/05/2026 13:25

Or "sock it and see", in this case. 👊

😂

I should have!

Adding ‘ies’ to things makes me a bit sick in my mouth.

sweeties, kiddies and doggies. always makes me think of paedophiles.

Crikey, that's some reach...

it probably is but it makes me cringe a lot when i hear it!!

maybe the child catcher from
chitty chitty would be more accurate.

roseswithoutthorns · 02/05/2026 23:06

Writing Of instead of have as in eg should of literally makes my toes curl 😂

I hate it when ordering drink or food people say"Can I get" instead of "Can I have". Admittedly it does seem to be more common with young people.

I never understand people’s problem with get.

One of the meanings of ‘to get’ is ‘to receive’. Nobody has an issue with people saying ‘I got a letter in the post today’, or ‘What did you get for your birthday?’ so I don’t understand what’s wrong about asking to get(receive) a cup of coffee.

UnctuousUnicorns · 03/05/2026 11:01

Not so much a word or phrase, but I had to hide a thread once simply because there was a glaring spelling error in the title, and my brain just couldn't cope with seeing it constantly in the "Trending" list at the side. Yeah, I know, I'm a spelling Nazi. So shoot me. Or use autocorrect - it's less messy. 😅

igelkott2026 · 03/05/2026 11:43

Heard in Sainsbury's this morning - "climes" - is warmer climes on holiday. I'd not noticed that one before but I have added it to my list :)

igelkott2026 · 03/05/2026 11:44

quarterlyreporting · 02/05/2026 13:02

Jammies for pyjamas. Horrible word.

Yes it's a bit cringe (and I know the expression a bit cringe annoys people too!)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/05/2026 11:47

Mash potato
Pack lunch
Ice coffee
🤬
And since I’ve just seen it on here, ‘fayre’.
It’s ‘fair’ if e.g. a school ditto, and ‘fare’ if it means food.

I did actually once look it up in my hefty Oxford dictionary in case I was wrong, but it’s down as a ‘pseudo-archaic’ spelling of fair/fare.

roseswithoutthorns · 03/05/2026 12:26

'Child free' can't stand the term. As mentioned in another thread children are not an unnecessary burdon to be freed from.

SPENNY

oh my life no

There was a really annoying Christmas ad (can't remember which shop, maybe Asda,) on the TV in December 2025/last Christmas, and the guy 'singing' talked about 'spenny gifts' (at a good price,) and it filled me with rage every time I heard him say 'spenny gifts!' Hmm

Awful, annoying, word!

.

StudyinBlue · 03/05/2026 12:43

The word ‘spendy’. Even my predictive text won’t predict it 😂. What’s wrong with just saying ‘expensive’?

RisingVamp · 03/05/2026 12:48

WhitsunWeedings · 30/04/2026 17:54

"Put my big girl pants on" fills me with indescribable rage. Also reminds me of all that weird 'adult baby' shite.

I hate this expression so much. Even more so when it’s said to people facing a challenge. “Time to put your big girl pants on”. So patronising and also conjures up a weird mental image of someone wearing a gigantic pair of pants for me 🤷🏻‍♀️

RisingVamp · 03/05/2026 12:58

Tummy time. Not sure why but I absolutely hate the phrase.

Oh,Vamp,I know. A former manager of mine at work once said it ,which shocked me,she was a wonderful woman!
Re: patronising- I know just what you mean. When one of my parents died someone said 'chin up,chicken'.....I mean,I hadn't just cut my finger.

Not always but they really can be in some instances.
