To think saving on Universal Credit is extremely difficult?

FirmGreyMember · Yesterday 20:42

It feels like Universal Credit doesn’t really leave much room for saving once basic living costs are covered. I know in theory people say to put even small amounts aside but in practice it seems very difficult when most of the money goes on essentials.

AIBU to think there’s very little opportunity to build savings on UC?

Yep

Not at all. It's not trolling because you disagree with it.

If you has a nhs dentist would you still have to pay though?

I don't think so but I'm not sure we haven't had nhs Dentists round here for years its either private or no dentist

Northermcharn · Yesterday 22:46

Or just plain stupid, but either way you are right that they are not worth engaging with.

great debate - as expected :)

Bless. It;s never going to work when so many people claim benefits. What have Labour done.

Either you've had a (good) few or you're a bot gone rogue. Try again, see if you can make it make sense second time round.

That’s the difference then because I’m sure it would be free.

Yes but people on uc have it better with certain things like prescriptions, if I went for a filling I would automatically be skint and I think if uc claimant and could save money working people would be even more frustrated. I know people on pip who can save and go on holidays etc. I know people on UC who can go abroad I think it depends on how you spend your money many people have top of the range phones nails done etc, takeaways if you are saying you don’t have phone contracts, subscriptions tv go the salon regularly for nails and hair and don’t have pets or holidays you just have enough to eat and heat pay your bills with nothing left over then that’s shit but everyone I know who gets UC are not worse off than me.

PIP is not a means-tested benefit. You can get PIP if you’re disabled, even if you’re not entitled to UC. You could earn £100K a year and still get PIP. You’re effectively saying that disabled people shouldn’t have holidays.

Its not about agreeing or disagreeing its about you spreading misinformation and when you're told your wrong instead of listening and learning something you won't accept it

Cringing for you!

It really isnt true at all!

I cringe for many people on the benefits threads all the time, its so transparent they all think they're entitled to everything. And they don't care where it comes from. 'the rich' I guess.. economically illiterate

Like I said having an NHS dentist is a massive privilege in this country free or not. Their lile gold dust

XenoBitch · Yesterday 21:41

Sorry but @youalright does have a point.
There was a thread on here were OP was on £100k+ and said they were so "broke" due to CoL that they would have to cancel Netflix (which I have and is £6pm). People like that are the ones that are tone deaf and out of touch.
If you are on a high salary and have to cut back on Netflix then you are shit with money.

Edited

I thought you were on benefits? How can you afford Netflix on benefits? I

But your facts are wrong. People on UC are always better off working more hours. Yes, they might get less in UC, but they’ll make far more in wages than they lose in UC.

The rules were changed years ago to make it more beneficial to work.

This is what winds me up. I work in the area of public spending. There is ZERO leeway in the money we have. We desperately need to stop the national debt increasingly endlessly, and yet we have people on benefits with Netflix. If you have enough to get Netflix then you are receiving more in benefits than you need and the government needs to address this excess spending. Anything they can save will put off the point at which this country drowns in the sea of welfare payments being chucked around. I can’t believe so many posters don’t understand this. How can you be so economically illiterate?

If you mean benefits being designed to cover basics only, perhaps. My point is that having no realistic room to build even a tiny emergency buffer can leave people permanently financially vulnerable.

I haven't read all the replies you've had OP, but I used to work for a local council helping people apply for hardship fund. It was a small pot of money that you could apply for, and I helped people get it to buy a second hand replacement washing machine, or replace water damaged carpet, or to get some furniture when moving into an unfurnished place. Those kinds of one off emergencies/expenses you're talking about. Benefits aren't designes to be saved, as others have said, so this fills the gap. I've just seen its changed name to this: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/crisis-and-resilience-fund-guidance-for-local-authorities-in-england-1-april-2026-to-31-march-2029/the-crisis-and-resilience-fund-guidance-for-local-authorities-in-england-1-april-2026-to-31-march-2029#:~:text=The%20Crisis%20and%20Resilience%20Fund,specified%20funding%20for%20housing%20support

If your only income is from the taxpayer, no, you shouldn’t have Netflix. The taxpayer shouldn’t be paying for disabled people to have Netflix. It’s a waste of money.

TableTopTree · Yesterday 22:58

FirmGreyMember · Yesterday 20:50

That’s not really the point I was making. I wasn’t saying benefits should leave people able to build significant savings, just that having little to no room to put aside even a small emergency buffer can leave people permanently on the edge financially.

If you're on benefits, you've already dropped off the edge, you're not contributing to society.

I'm just about happy with the idea of my taxes paying for the bare minimum of sustistance for you, but do you really think I shoud be funding your savings?

Would you knock on your neighbour's door and ask them for £50 to add to your savings?

Because that's exactly what you're expecting.

No I’m not saying that im saying people I know on pip can save up and afford holidays. I know how pip works I’m making a point to the op people on benefits can save it is possible.

Wow.

Genuinely gobsmacked that you are standing by that comment.

No one chooses to become disabled, and yet you resent them spending SIX POUNDS a month to watch TV?! REALLY?!

There’s normal tv. Christ the taxpayer isn’t obliged to fund your entertainment. I can’t believe I am having to point this out!

Yes, apparently you should! Then you will learn your lesson that you should not have chosen to be disabled!

TableTopTree · Yesterday 23:01

I have netflix to why can't disabled people have netflix?

Why didn't your critical illness insurance policy, or your income protection policy pay out when you claimed on it due to your disability?

Nobody's saying people living with disabilities can't have Netflix, just the disabled people who, for whatever reason, chose to just chance it without such a policy.

Your neighbour's takes shouldn't be paying for you to have Netflix FFS.

Difference is, you can leave the house without help.
