AIBU to wonder why Graham Norton needs to do ads?

The guy is surely fairly minted by any national standard. He never stops working.

I just think, if you don’t need the money - why would you do ads? It’s not as dignified as all his well paid work, surely.

Maybe he is using the ad funds for some charitable endeavour. But I hate to see it when they don’t need to do it and I definitely think slightly less of him. Pure, weird greed.

And similarly @queenceleste I hate to see it when people judge for others how much money they need to earn before they should stop.

You have decided he "doesn't need" to do it.

Similarly, if you worked in retail or a similar style of job, I could say to you "don't go for the overtime - you don't need it when you have plenty to pay the bills and pay for your car" etc.

It's all relative! Income , expenditure, it's all relative.

If he wants extra income on top of his broadcast salary, he will have his reasons. Maybe he pays for family or friends or he wants to continue charitable giving while living comfortably.

His money, his job opportunities, his choice.

I think the same every time I see Ant and Dec on an advert.

Womanofcustard · Yesterday 15:53

Because they’re greedy

Aberdeenowl · Yesterday 15:55

We say the same in our house, as well - Wheel of Fortune, Graham??? The money must be excellent!

Fraudornot · Yesterday 15:56

It’s probably a lot of money for hardly any work and that would probs be hard for many of us to resist no matter how much we had

maftaz · Yesterday 15:57

I think he sold his house in London for a packet too. Lucky so and so.

But we don't know why he needs or wants to do advertising. Passing the time maybe or alimony 😊

I ask myself this every time I see Judi Dench doing that Money Supermarket ad. I mean really Jude? You? Has it really come to this?

I also very recently heard Deborah Meaden doing some radio advert for something, I can't even what it was now, I think it was an electricty provider or something equally dull. But I remember thinking she was a strange choice as the product/service had no obvious connection to her or any of her fields of expertise and interests. She's absolutely minted. I can't think what possessed her to bother with that.

TFImBackIn · Yesterday 16:00

You can't say someone is greedy for accepting a job. That just doesn't make sense. Would you say that if your friend got promoted? If a friend started their own business and it began to expand?

Runnersandtoms · Yesterday 16:01

I thought the same about Judi Dench doing Money Supermarket and now I see David Tennant has taken over that as dear Judi has mostly retired.

My thoughts were the advertisers myst be paying a hell of a lot to get big names like that as they wouldn't do it otherwise.

Also I always wonder whether Jess Glynn wishes she hadn't sold out to Jet2 or is happy her song is constantly played and synonymous with their adverts.

Cross posted re Judi!

ElenOfTheWays · Yesterday 16:01

I'd find it hard to think less of him than I already do.

OvernightBloats · Yesterday 16:02

When celebrities do lots of adverts, I get fed up of seeing their faces all the time. To a point where sometimes I start to not like them because it has reached saturation point. (eg Davina McCall is always selling something!)

I also wondered why Graham Norton is doing adverts. He didn't seem to be the type to want to go this route of making money. He must be minted. He is not short of work.

Maybe he is doing it for easy money with a big payment? Maybe he has a huge tax bill to pay?!

Thewheelsfelloffthebus · Yesterday 16:05

Everything is relative - I earn enough to pay my bills comfortably but if someone offered me a couple of thousand to do a job on a Saturday as a one off - I’d do it - imagine celebs feel the same about filming a single ad in a day.

The "and that's entertainment" podcast covered Jet2 using Jess Glynn's song the other week, apparently it's made her millions. I always think she sounds like she's smoked 20 a day. Definitely what you call a lucky break as I doubt her career would have spanned that long and had many more hits.

I read an interview she did when she first started the ads, she said due to health reasons she can no longer do film work etc so the money from the ads pays her mortgage.

Jamie Dimon (CEO , JP MorganChase) is worth about 2 billion USD.

Should he step down? Surely 2 billion is enough?

Should he only take his 36 million dollar salary, and not take stock options as that's greedy?

If Sydney Sweeney is in 3 or 4 Hollywood movies a year, should she limit herself to just those, and not do ads either, just in case @OvernightBloats from Mumsnet decides she's "earned enough" and is in danger of overexposure?

Honestly, nothing like having a whinge is there. Hint - it's not going to make you richer.

Tryingtokeepgoing · Yesterday 16:08

When I see the likes of Graham Norton or Judy Dench doing adverts as they get older despite, certainly in the case of Norton, very lucrative careers, the old Oscar Wilde quote comes to mind... "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about"

I think they just like the attention, and enjoy the process of creating these things because they are, for however long it takes to film them, the centre of attention. I am sure the money is nice, but it can't be the reason to do them. Although, maybe that's why I am not ultra rich. Once I reached the stage I could afford all I'd reasonably want for a comfortable life I couldn't be bothered 😂

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · Yesterday 16:09

Why does it matter? He (or any other celebrity) gets offered a job, they can take it or leave it as they choose.

Same if someone is paid to have their music in an ad.

It earns a lot of money. 🤷‍♀️

I am not whinging about it! 😂

I wondered why Graham Norton has chosen to do this as have many others as evidenced by this thread!

It comes across as greedy to some people (obviously not to you!)

HoldMyWine · Yesterday 16:12

Adverts pay well, are easy work and they get residuals each time they are played. Why wouldn’t they do them?

Nah sorry the 'opinions' on this thread are astounding.

"A lucky break"...?

Jess Glynne has sustained a dozen years in a strong career in the music industry...

but remember (and I'm sure you won't) that she had already vocalled on two number 1 records in 2013.

That's two years before Jet2 holidays.

I don't know what "sounding like smoking 20 a day" has to do with anything. If that was a criteria, Dua Lipa would have had no chance.

Lostallhistory · Yesterday 16:15

They possibly don't need the money or maybe they do , we can't know their financial set up. But appearing on tv whether it's a chat show or advert is their job, they're media people.
Same as multi millionaire actors, why has Tom Hanks done so many films, because it's his job 🤷‍♀️

Saying it's greedy is a bit daft, you could say that any wealthy person needs to stop working when they accrue 'enough' money.

XenoBitch · Yesterday 16:16

George Clooney did coffee pod ads. Loads of A-listers have done perfume ads.
Work is work, and it adds more to their portfolio.
Plus you have remembered the ad because of who was in it. So it has done its job.
