AIBU to wonder why Graham Norton needs to do ads?

The guy is surely fairly minted by any national standard. He never stops working.

I just think, if you don’t need the money - why would you do ads? It’s not as dignified as all his well paid work, surely.

Maybe he is using the ad funds for some charitable endeavour. But I hate to see it when they don’t need to do it and I definitely think slightly less of him. Pure, weird greed.

It's lots of money and publicity. That's it. Voice overs must be a dream. Sean Bean has been doing 02 for years. Clooney and Dua Lipa doing Nespresso. Albeit that's a brand but those two don't need the money but are now the faces of Nespresso

Yes on her insta, yeah sure but the money from Friends was pretty eye watering! I always wonder more from a reputation perspective, there’s a brand with being a Hollywood celebrity and brand endorsements can undermine that a bit I think? Although interesting to read about George Clooney.

It’s still only one show though and she’s at best an average actor. I imagine she’s grateful to get the work.

George Clooney uses the Nespresso money for good. He funds a satellite that monitors the border of Sudan to keep an eye on a warlord.

Oh that’s good!

It's useful to have a thread where all the unambitious have kindly identified themselves.

I am fascinated at how personally invested and defensive you are getting on this thread.what is your job?

I couldn’t care less what celebrities do. I occasionally see an advert with George Clooney on and think why is his is he doing this advert? That’s it. I give it no passing thought otherwise in my day-to-day life and just happened upon this thread!

You’re being quite rude, defensive and odd about this. Why is that do you think?

leshirondelles · Yesterday 18:36

Adverts pay well. Jane Horrocks said in an interview that her London home was nicknamed Tesco Towers as the adverts she did for them paid for it.

Sleepthief · Yesterday 18:36

I think part of it is that as a freelancer, which Graham Norton et al essentially are, is that you don’t know for certain that there will be another job after this one. You’re only as secure as your current TV ratings (just ask Holly and Phil), so if they’re offered an easy-money ad campaign, why would they not? I’m sure most people would do the same…

*disclaimer: there are of course some celebrities/entertainers who refuse to do ads on a matter of principle, and more power to them too.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · Yesterday 18:53

Judy Dench definitely does not need to worry about paying her mortgage! And if she does then she is seriously shit with money.

BillieWiper · Yesterday 19:01

He probably needs the money more than Robert Deniro who advertised crumpets or something.

Why does Kevin Bacon advertise BT? Why do Ant & Dec advertise mortgages? Why did Joanna Lumley advertise a dodgy MLM?

They're actors. Performers. Adverts are just short films with high budgets.

It's easy money. As it's only a one or two days shoot for the same fee they'd get for six weeks filming a terrestrial TV show.

Also it can be fun. It's a no brainer really.

Duckswaddle · Yesterday 19:03

Ads pay a lot of money. Why not?

I don't know what he does with all his money, but maybe he uses it for good

I've heard that he paid or partly paid for a young woman/girl to have a mastectomy because she wanted to be a transman. Whether that's true or not I don't know.

Bloody hell, he probably just uses it for food and clothes and products and stuff. Like everyone else does.

MN is batshit.

WilfredsPies · Yesterday 19:05

Google says ‘The accounts lodged with Companies House in the UK show that the pay to Norton reduced by £336,000 from £2.77m to £2.43m last year’. Even if that’s a couple of years old, most of us live to our means and I doubt he’s living in a two bed terraced house in Dartford. I don’t blame him for wanting to make up that shortfall and ensure his face stays in the public consciousness.

Sod dignity, if someone wanted to pay me thousands of pounds for sitting on a horse and talking about a bank for a day, I’d be up there like Lester Piggott.

Not really - he has learnt millions in the few decades he's been working in TV, radio and from his books. So he's not your typical worker.

I didn't say he was a 'typical worker', I don't even know what you mean by that.

I said he's a worker going to work and earning money.

It's weird that the OP and a couple of others seem to think he's earned 'enough'.

A typical worker would mean to me someone who hasn't earned millions of pounds over thirty odd - maybe even twenty - years and would have reached a point they could have comfortably retired very early. Unlike the vast majority of people who don't earn vast sums in a relatively short space of time.

Right, but he's clearly a hard worker who loves his job, so I don't get why some people think he's 'earned enough'?

Sir David Attenborough clearly also loves his job and at almost 100 years old, could be deemed to have 'earned enough', but it's not just about money for many people.

TeflonBoot · Yesterday 19:28

You could say the same about any sleb doing an advert. Money for old rope.

I don't know him, so I don't know if he enjoys doing advertisements, which isn't what he's been doing for decades. Sir David Attenborough, however, is a different kettle of fish because he's still doing the documentaries that has formed a big part of his working life since the early 1970s. So I get why he continues doing them, whilst he's still healthy.

They're both hard working men who appear to love working.

Not much anyone can say about that really 🤷‍♂️

Yes, this.
People who work in entertainment do so because they specifically want to do so.... be it following a passion for acting/presenting etc and/or just wanting to be in the limelight. And they need to have the talent to succeed and have a face that fits too.
Someone who just wants to go into the sector for the money is not going to get very far.

When celebrities do lots of adverts, I get fed up of seeing their faces all the time. To a point where sometimes I start to not like them because it has reached saturation point. (eg Davina McCall is always selling something!)

I also wondered why Graham Norton is doing adverts. He didn't seem to be the type to want to go this route of making money. He must be minted. He is not short of work.

Maybe he is doing it for easy money with a big payment? Maybe he has a huge tax bill to pay?!

You sound like you watch too much TV 😁

Advocodo · Yesterday 19:41

I would say the same about Robbie Williams and the felix car ads.

FieryA · Yesterday 19:49

So what? Hundreds of celebs, sportspeople, models do ads, events, store openings etc. It gives them exposure, increases their fan base, and of course money. Celebs also have high outgoings and any additional stream of income is always welcome. Also, their fame might not last forever, so they've got to make the most while they can. Most people would take up additional opportunities if it gives them financial benefits.

I'd be amazed if you haven't seen an advert more than once! Even with watching one programme on TV, the same adverts are on repeat practically every advert break!

I get fed up of seeing the same faces even in one evening 😄

Don't you watch TV?!

I didn’t say she wasn’t well paid. And fair play to her for making that amount of money by being in some crappy sitcom. It doesn’t make her talented though.
