Or find a lovely little village school and spend our days living a slow, traditional life

It’s my dream

Has anyone got this, am I being realistic?

tealandteal · Yesterday 20:17

Well we live a slow village life with a small school, allotment etc but we both have to work to afford it.

ladygindiva · Yesterday 20:18

I live in Cornwall and it is lovely, but it's very expensive and jobs are scarce especially well paid ones. If you find a high enough paying low enough hours job to have the time and energy left to homeschool and afford a house then do it . I suspect that's rare though.

LastHotel · Yesterday 20:20

What job are you planning on doing?

Leavelingeringbreath · Yesterday 20:20

A friend did it. Turns out Cornwall can be quite grim in winter and lots of the lovely stuff that's open in summer just shuts in winter.

Cornwall is not an affluent part of the UK there aren't loads of jobs outside the seasonal tourist trade linked stuff.

Often these pipe dreams aren't quite so great in reality

Hiddeninthetrees · Yesterday 20:20

I don't understand the relevance of the small village school? We do love living in the countryside though.

Waterwaterwaterwaterwatercycle · Yesterday 20:20

It is a lovely dream! Whether it is realistic depends on your career, finances, whether you have a partner etc.

More info needed

This.

Plus flipping 2nd home owners pricing or the locals. Tourists flooding the beaches every holiday. And no matter where you are in Cornwall, you're a long way from the rest of the UK!

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · Yesterday 20:26

If you can afford it yes, do it while your children are young enough to accept the change. I live in Cornwall on the coast and it is fantastic. I can go to the beach whenever I like, I've got amazing places on my doorstep, glorious views, cosy pubs. I've just got home from the most amazing beachfront restaurant and a stunningly beautiful walk along the coast, watching people gig racing, sailing and generally messing about on the water, You have to pick the right location and not compromise on that.

I'm not sure about home schooling- I know a few people who do this and the children are quite isolated I think.

Lilyhatesjaz · Yesterday 20:33

I went to a small village school and hated it. If for some reason your face doesn't fit with the small amount of children in your class you can feel very lonely and isolated. No class next door where you may find children you get on better with.

Yes, this is the problem 😩

Yes, probably right

Just less kids per class, outside space & fresh air, tight knit, safe community…

I grew up in a very grim place - a town up north that had seen better days. Moved to the Derbyshire dales to have children. I still can’t believe how lucky I am.

I assumed the home schooling community was massive there, with many families & kids
Where do you live and what do you do, if you don’t mind me asking?
The financial aspect will be the only real problem I think, although I see others making it work and my family live there and survive well

Isn’t winter grim every where in the uk?! It would be very strange for anyone to assume Cornwall would be different.

That does sound lovely also 💓 this is the life i’m seeking for Dd-sea, countryside…

There is nothing to do in Cornwall when it rains or is too miserable to go out. In the summer it's overrun with tourists. I would avoid the coast if you want a quiet life OP.

But isn’t there just the same to do as anywhere? Shopping, soft play, cinema, bowling, restaurants? What is different

Cornwall is a living hell from April to October...tourists everywhere

Portacloy · Yesterday 21:09

Why home schooling?

MaybeToxic · Yesterday 21:10

We toyed with moving to Cornwall for the same reasons. We decided against it and I'm glad we did. We still holiday there twice a year and love it, but settled on moving to a village in the home counties instead, which is beautiful. Gorgeous village school and the perfect balance of countryside walks on your doorstep and amenities nearby. I just wish we were closer to surf!

That’s the one downside to where we are: we couldn’t be any further from the sea really!

But we do have stunning mountain and moorland, beautiful open spaces and streams and meadows and woods. When my DC moan about school I have to stop myself saying ‘you do not know how lucky you are; when I was young …’

Cornwall is gorgeous but I’d be worried about how far it is from everything.

Alternatively, how about Somerset? Or wales? Gorgeous beaches.

Depending on where you are in Cornwall you could easily be over an hour from a soft play or cinema

My Dd is in a school with many kids in the class, not much outside space, not much creativity etc

It would be Newquay/Perranporth area
