To think people swear too much online and IRL?

I'm a Gen-Z'er in my late 20s living in Ireland. I would be considered unusual in a few ways but one thing people always point out is how seldom I swear. I guess it's a habit I picked up from my parents. They're not religious by any means and aren't even that strict of parents but they don't swear nearly to the same level as people do here in Ireland.

I understand it's cultural and my friend pointed out that the Irish, Australians, Brits, and Americans have much less taboo on swearing (though Americans would still be conservative compared to others).

I don't even mind hearing them but every time, I go on Reddit, It feels a bit grating hearing the word "fuck" constantly thrown around. To me excessive swearing seems a bit low class when it's done in a normal conversation or debate.

I’m in my 50’s and my potty mouth has got worse as I got older. Really couldn't give a fuck either 🤷🏻‍♀️

You could ban swearing but the “low-class” will still find a way to make their feelings known.

ETA - MN didn’t post my fucking gif so now I look like a twat!

[Imagine a gif of Lister holding up a ‘smeg’ sign to Kryten.].

‘Low-class’?

I never claimed to be any class. Like I said, if someone is triggered by the phrase, they need to look in the mirror. Do you want me to get you one or do you have one to hand?

It's viewed as "low class" because it means those who swear have a lack of social awareness, or regard, for others environment.

Being impolite, or uncouth, are terms equated to being "low class".

Low class doesn't equate to financial standing within society.

If the term "low class" offends someone, they might need to look into a mirror and ask themselves some hard questions.

Verbal standards, amongst other standards, have been put in place by and for society forever.

When these slip, we have a thoughtless society full of selfish people who "don't care what others think," until they want others to care how they think ... vicious cycle.

It's okay to not swear, OP. It's okay to have standards. It's also okay to be "religious" and not caveat every thing you think with defending your position based on religion.

👏👏👏

I don't need one. I couldn't not give a flying fuck how you or others view me. I think you definitely need a mirror though.

If you don't care, then kindly disengage from the things I say to the OP and not make them about you. Off you pop.

Maybe they swear because they don’t have any pearls to clutch. Low class swines!

Maybe so? It was a question from the OP, not me.

I don’t fucking care

‘Low-class’?

OP’s terminology. Hence the quotation marks.

I love a good fuck.

Me too, and I also enjoy swearing.

AuntChippy · 26/04/2026 20:35

I don’t notice swearing. I’m sweary myself; they’re just words. In my team, we nominate a ‘cunt of the week’ 😂

I’ll admit, someone that objects to swearing might not be my cup of tea. It’s a bit prissy.

Damnd · 26/04/2026 20:37

Don't care much but I really really hate, for example, sitting in a kids sports class and the adults are chatting together effing and blinding.. like hello kids are here

Pitythefool · 26/04/2026 20:39

I know lots of words. I still like the word fuck.

bookwormcrazy · 26/04/2026 20:42

Low class?? That makes you unreasonable.

UnaOfStormhold · 26/04/2026 20:55

Some swearing is just meaningless - more punctuation than expression. But creative, expressive swearing, as often seen on here, is much more entertaining and gets a point across very aptly.

TerracottaBowl · 26/04/2026 21:47

We all pick habits up from our parents as kids but without the need to turn them into a personality trait.
