To think people swear too much online and IRL?

I'm a Gen-Z'er in my late 20s living in Ireland. I would be considered unusual in a few ways but one thing people always point out is how seldom I swear. I guess it's a habit I picked up from my parents. They're not religious by any means and aren't even that strict of parents but they don't swear nearly to the same level as people do here in Ireland.

I understand it's cultural and my friend pointed out that the Irish, Australians, Brits, and Americans have much less taboo on swearing (though Americans would still be conservative compared to others).

I don't even mind hearing them but every time, I go on Reddit, It feels a bit grating hearing the word "fuck" constantly thrown around. To me excessive swearing seems a bit low class when it's done in a normal conversation or debate.

I can't stand it. Especially at work.

marsbarslice · 26/04/2026 19:28

I don't even notice swearing. It's just normal adult language to me, especially on an online forum.

PinkyFlamingo · 26/04/2026 19:29

I think Billy nails it

Swearing is associated with a better vocabulary and higher intelligence.

You should give it a try.

Shallotsaresmallonions · 26/04/2026 19:30

I couldn't give a fuck if you think it's "low class" honestly. I don't care for the opinions of people who get hung up on class.

Mrsblobby88 · 26/04/2026 19:32

'low class' 🤣🤣
I don't think there are many people that would really give a flying fuck about what you think, especially with your stuck up attitude.

Fuck, no! The beauty of the English language in all its depth and colours means sometimes a good swear word is just what is called for! For the record, I went to an exceedingly posh school and university. The more upper class someone tends to be, the swearier their vocabulary.

JLou08 · 26/04/2026 19:39

They're just words. I think we should all just do away with this notion of swear words. Why is it worse to say fuck than it is to call someone classless/fat/stupid/crazy?

GumballsAndGobstoppers · 26/04/2026 19:40

Fuck that

TittyGajillions · 26/04/2026 19:41

I love a good fuck.

IME, some workplaces and groups only speak in a blue streak and others are seemingly v clean. I worked in graphic design for a while and, when clients were not around, it was f-ing and blinding all the way: all words were preceded by f...
Following that, I have worked in schools for 20+ years now. The language is very clean, not a single 4 letter word to be heard, but the innuendo is absolutely towering and filthy. The 'cursing' was on a much higher level. All of it is printable but on closer inspection, all of it is utterly unrepeatable.

SerendipityJane · 26/04/2026 19:48

J'aime tellement utiliser des gros mots que j'en apprends dans les langues étrangères.

likelysuspect · 26/04/2026 19:50

Im a terrible potty mouth. I try to reduce it but it just comes out.

WhereIsMyLight · 26/04/2026 19:52

You could ban swearing but the “low-class” will still find a way to make their feelings known.

ETA - MN didn’t post my fucking gif so now I look like a twat!

[Imagine a gif of Lister holding up a ‘smeg’ sign to Kryten.].

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 26/04/2026 19:52

It depends on the environment. I swear, and for those saying that means I have a limited vocabulary, you couldn’t be further from the truth.

I don’t swear in front of people unless I know they are okay with it and I only use the c-word when I am very sure it won’t offend (unless I’m actually shouting it at someone).

I work in a fairly sweary job (more muttering it than saying it out loud). However I know what is and isn’t appropriate and don’t like people to police my language.

YummyPieCrust · 26/04/2026 19:55

It's viewed as "low class" because it means those who swear have a lack of social awareness, or regard, for others environment.

Being impolite, or uncouth, are terms equated to being "low class".

Low class doesn't equate to financial standing within society.

If the term "low class" offends someone, they might need to look into a mirror and ask themselves some hard questions.

Verbal standards, amongst other standards, have been put in place by and for society forever.

When these slip, we have a thoughtless society full of selfish people who "don't care what others think," until they want others to care how they think ... vicious cycle.

It's okay to not swear, OP. It's okay to have standards. It's also okay to be "religious" and not caveat every thing you think with defending your position based on religion.

Don’t come to Glasgow. Calling someone a cunt is normal and can be good or bad depending on context.

Ditto

I dont give a shiny shit if you dont like it. I follow the rules of the sub/forum etc, and if other posters dont like it, well you're not chained to it, you have other options

I don't agree with the class statement, but I also don't like listening to excessive swearing.

crumpet · 26/04/2026 20:16

Look, you’ll have people with a poor vocabulary who have no recourse other than to swear every other word, you’ll have people who wince at the very thought of of swearing, you’ll have people who swear from time to time, and you’ll have people with a vast and rich vocabulary who like to swear often.
