Would you be bothered if your partner called you his ‘lady friend’?

My partner said to his brother (who I’ve never met) that he’s busy today because his ‘lady friend’ was over. Would this bother you?

How old are you both? My dad is 76 and might refer to his partner as his lady friend but any younger it seems very odd unless in jest 🤣

thinkprint · 26/04/2026 19:05

We are late 30s.

Guessing he’s a fairly new or casual relationship if you’ve not met his brother?

Then yes 🤣🤣🤣 but id probably just laugh and rip the piss out of him for it

MyBraveFace · 26/04/2026 19:06

I would assume a casual or platonic relationship from that description.

No, we’ve known each other for years, had quite a casual relationship for a couple of years which has gradually grown more serious.

Why’ve you not met his brother then? It’s not an offensive term but it does sound like a casual relationship

MargotLovesTom · 26/04/2026 19:11

Were you bothered by the fact that he didn't refer to you by your name? Almost like his brother wouldn't know who you were if he just said, 'Sarah's here'....'Eh? Who's Sarah?'

No, his brother knows who I am. I wasn’t bothered, but I told a friend that he’d used such an old fashioned term and she said she’d be insulted.

We don’t really have a lot to do with each other’s families.

Might be a joke. I wouldn't worry about it.

It just sounds like cheesy banter between brothers. Along the lines of 'gentleman caller'. Wouldn't bother me.

If you aren’t bothered that’s all that matters. Out of context I thought it just sounded casual, like friends with benefits really, but if you aren’t offended then your friend doesn’t need to be insulted on your behalf

HelenaWilson · 26/04/2026 19:21

Better than grown adults saying 'boyfriend' and 'girlfriend'.

Error404FucksNotFound · 26/04/2026 19:23

Wouldn't bother me .

Maybe he doesnt feel you are partners, maybe he feels he's a bit old for girlfriend / boyfriend.

CurdinHenry · 26/04/2026 19:23

I think it means you're a girlfriend rather than a partner as I would understand the term

AliTheMinx · 26/04/2026 19:25

Yes. I.am not ancient!

HamToasties · 26/04/2026 19:25

Maybe I’m really old (40s) but I have heard it said a few times. I actually like it, sounds much better than partner or girlfriend.

Oleoreoleo · 26/04/2026 19:26

What would you prefer he call you?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 26/04/2026 19:31

Presumably partner as that’s what she calls him

Bikergran · 26/04/2026 19:33

If he's under 95 years old, frankly it's weird.

Foodylicious · 26/04/2026 19:34

I'd either feel able to massively take the piss, or get the ick.
Thinking about it, I think I'd be more likely to get the ick.

Plummagic · 26/04/2026 19:35

I'd think it was funny.

IDontHateRainbows · 26/04/2026 19:36

I'd find it hilarious 😂

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/04/2026 19:37

Start referring to him as your 'gentleman caller'... 😂
