AIBU to ask what your half of household bills comes to?

What is your half of household bills? Excluding food shopping. Just mortgage/ rent, utilities, council tax, joint insurance or car payments. Assuming you split costs 50/50 with a partner or thereabouts.

I've seen a few content creators talk about this online recently and been surprised how high it is, usually always over £1000 meaning full costs are over £2000 before food.

I'm probably being unreasonable to think that's such a lot given how high costs are at the moment

I live alone but my bills without food, any car payments (I pay yearly for insurance) or cat food/litter is around £1000. When my ex lived here I think we paid about £800 each which included a bit of savings and we paid for our own cars separate.

Twokittenchaos · 24/04/2026 19:57

£1,050 excluding childcare, £1,400 including it

Kisco · 24/04/2026 20:09

My half is £1400 - this includes mortgage, council tax, car payment, petrol, gas/electric, nursery fees and insurances (life, home and car). Doesn't include groceries.

CoastalCalm · 24/04/2026 20:16

About £350 a month but mortgage is paid off

tnorfotkcab · 24/04/2026 20:18

We just have the one account it all on goes in.

Didimum · 24/04/2026 20:33

We don’t split 50/50, but if we did my half would be £2,650 (£5,300 Total). That includes everything, like children’s clubs/tutoring, cleaner etc, but not food shop.

Why exclude food shop? It’s a pretty essential bill!

loosethepounds · 24/04/2026 20:46

£325. Mortgage paid off. Both now retired.

Swissmeringue · 24/04/2026 20:50

I'm a SAHM so nothing lol. I'd need to double check the spreadsheet but I think our essential bills in total are around £1500 a month, our house and cars are paid off though. Before our mortgage was paid off last year it was roughly £3000 as our mortgage was also £1500.

It's going to vary wildly dependent on location etc. £1500 might sound like a huge mortgage in Burnley but in London it's tiny.

Can't you add up your own bills for comparison?

maddiemookins16mum · 24/04/2026 20:55

We each pay £825 a month to a ‘bills account’. All of our bills including mortgage and every other outgoing comes from this account. Included in this £825 is a buffer £100.00 each.

In addition to this we pay £200.00 a month each to the ‘grub account’ - this is for our food/household shopping.

RomeoOscarXrayXray · 24/04/2026 20:58

Based on our very detailed outgoing spreadsheet which accounts for every single household cost we need £3,591.17 every month. That is full bells and whistles. Pet costs, DC costs, insurance, food, miscellaneous spending, mortgage, the lot.

My share based on proportionate income is £1,600 per month. DH and I have equal disposable income after all bills are paid.

Waitingfordoggo · 24/04/2026 21:00

I put about £800-£1000 a month in the pot. We don’t have a mortgage or rent to pay.

So that is my contribution towards: utilities, council tax (ours is v high), broadband, TV, phone contracts, leisure centre memberships for 4, car lease payments, car insurance, life insurance, pet insurance. And probably some other things I’ve forgotten about.

GimmieABreakOr3 · 24/04/2026 21:01

£850 for my share, that’s before food. Live in SE England.

ilikeeggs · 24/04/2026 21:04

About £1400 but I’m single so nobody to share that with

Amba1998 · 24/04/2026 21:12

£1600 each but includes food

maggiesleapp · 24/04/2026 21:13

full monthly costs are:
Rates £68 (NI so rates similar to council tax but include water charges)
2x car insurance £74
2x car tax £40
Gas £49
Electric £50
house insurance £34
Phone x 2 £80
broadband £48
Netflix £8
private health £28
Total around £480 so £240 each. No mortgage, cars owned outright.
Our 2 DD’s are adults with their own families so no dependants.

TheDenimPoet · 24/04/2026 21:17

We put £500 each in the joint account each month. Our mortgage is paid off. It covers all bills, including car finance. Also includes the basic food shop. Our car is electric so is just lumped into the electric bill, costs us £40 a month to charge.

We might buy a takeaway or two each every month from our own money, occasionally a meal out. We never spend more than £600 a month each.

Living in one of the cheapest parts of the country, in a very small house, with solar panels.

asymmetrywoes · 24/04/2026 21:24

We pay £800 each into the joint account which covers mortgage, bills including council tax, water, gas and electric and food.
Each pay for our own cars - loans, insurance, fuel.

Olive567 · 24/04/2026 21:34

Live on my own, about £1400:
Mortgage £900
Utilities £120
Council tax £150
Phone £20
Internet £25
Car £150
Insurance £50
Subscriptions £20

localnotail · 24/04/2026 21:38

Live on my own. Pay about £1700 in bills monthly (mortgage and all other stuff).

CabbageWater · 24/04/2026 21:41

£1500 each per month (£3k total).
That's mortgage, nursery fees, utility bills, car insurance, life insurance, house insurance, pet insurance, Internet, TV and other subscriptions.

ArtfulDoddger · 24/04/2026 21:46

50% would be:

Mortgage £430
Electric £75
Oil Heating £75
Rates £65
Sky & Broadband £30
Diesel for car £180
Car Insurance £40
Car Tax £15
Car Loan £90
Childcare £100
Pet Insurance and Upkeep £70
Mobile Phone £55

BrendaSmall · 24/04/2026 21:46

lol I haven’t got a clue what the bills cost in our house, I pay for the electric and my husband pays for everything else and we have completely separate bank accounts!
