AIBU to ask what your half of household bills comes to?

What is your half of household bills? Excluding food shopping. Just mortgage/ rent, utilities, council tax, joint insurance or car payments. Assuming you split costs 50/50 with a partner or thereabouts.

I've seen a few content creators talk about this online recently and been surprised how high it is, usually always over £1000 meaning full costs are over £2000 before food.

I'm probably being unreasonable to think that's such a lot given how high costs are at the moment

£550 a month - but we have paid off our mortgage.

TeenToTwenties · 24/04/2026 15:46

Well in our nearest city, rent for a 2 bed flat is £1200 before you even get on to anything else ...

Renter2026 · 24/04/2026 15:46

I split my bills with me. Some of us live alone OP

£1,100 just fir bills seems such a lot, is your house large?

£1600 each / month inc mortgage which is £1450. Any treats / takeaways / clothes etc are not included in that.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 24/04/2026 15:53

We have a joint account, all bills around £750 but we are morgage free.

Is that due to large utility/ car bills?

OP posts:
Namechangetheyarewatching · 24/04/2026 15:54

Mortgage £700
Bills £300

Split between two £500

Then food £200 each

We pay our own petrol, clothes etc

bugalugs45 · 24/04/2026 15:55

Need To know exactly what you’re including ?
Gas, electric , water , council tax ,
but food shopping , insurances , car finance , phone bills , internet/ tv?

Ineedanewsofa · 24/04/2026 15:55

£2400, excluding groceries, savings/investments and overpayments, including school fees and all pet related expenses.
Cars are owned outright and we pay for car related expenses out of personal spends due to receiving car/travel allowances from work.

Everything except food - just the expenses to run house and car

Maybe not petrol for car though, just insurance and pcp etc

MidnightPatrol · 24/04/2026 15:57

About £2,000. Mortgage, council tax, utilities, insurance, internet etc.

£4,000 inc childcare.

Car / travel not included.

Catlover77 · 24/04/2026 15:58

£1600 each, excluding groceries

slamfightbrightlight · 24/04/2026 15:58

Fixed costs are close to £1500 combined. Council tax alone is almost £200/month! We don’t have childcare costs but that would probably double it if we did.

We each keep about £600 back in our personal accounts and everything else goes into joint account to cover bills, food etc. So we both have the same spare to play with. Anything that’s left in joint account at month end goes away for a rainy day.

Absolutepleb · 24/04/2026 15:59

£700 excluding food and mortgage, so £350 would be half ☺️

2 bed shithole

AnonKat · 24/04/2026 16:01

Ours is around 3k. Mortgage, car, electricity, gas, water, insurances, tv, Internet. I dont pay anything towards the bills. My money is used for food, savings and fun money.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 24/04/2026 16:03

I pay £1500 into the joint account, this includes food though as well as bills.

Biggest expense is mortgage £1,100, Food about £700, Council tax is over £300 a month (for ten months) a year, energy is less at this time of year with solar panels and heating hardly on/not on for a few months, but expensive in winter, TV (Sky Q multiroom), various insurance (two cars, home, dog, one car with a 17 year old insured on it!) phones, vet plans for pets, probably other things I've forgotten.

stackhead · 24/04/2026 16:04

Just over 1k for half here for mortgage and regular monthly direct debits.

Around £350. Council tax is around £500/month. No gas, electricity little more than the standing charge. No mortgage, rent, car payments, etc.

jumpingjohnny · 24/04/2026 16:12

A little over 2k for my share.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 24/04/2026 16:12

Then also we've got expenses that come out of our own accounts like paying for DD1 at university, credit card repayments, travel costs (about £300 a month each, not insignificant) savings and so on. Probably more like £5k a month all told (£2.5k each)
