AIBU to be concerned about Green candidates and antisemitism?

Twiglets1 · 24/04/2026 08:23

Ironically, given that the Green party is led by a Jewish man, the party has become home to political candidates causing distress and fear for many in the Jewish community.

Dr Phil Brookes, the Green Party candidate for Manor Park, Newcastle stated in a social media post that “it takes serious effort not to be a tiny bit anti-Semitic”.

Then there’s Sabine Mairey, the Green candidate for Clapham Town in south London. She posted a video on social media stating that a terrorist attack on a synagogue was “not anti-Semitism” but “revenge”.

Councillor Hau-Yu Tam is the Green candidate in the Deptford ward of Lewisham. She has expressed support for her “brilliant comrade and lawyer” Franck Magennis whose law firm Riverway to the Sea has sought the de-proscription of Hamas – the anti-Semitic terrorist group responsible for the mass murder and rape of October 7. She said she was extremely proud of Magennis for “blazing the way on this intervention”.

Ifhat Shaheen is a Green candidate in Stoke Newington. She has defended the October 7 attacks and suggested that Israel is harvesting organs from Palestinians.

Also in London is council candidate Saiqa Ali who posted an image of the Earth being strangled by a snake clothed in an Israeli flag, accompanied by the caption “It’s time to cut the head of this snake”.

Chandni Chopra is the Green Party candidate for Heaton, Newcastle. She has questioned whether Hamas used rape during their attacks despite the horrific evidence and previously described Zionism as a “mental illness”.

A second irony is that many Green Party voters will pride themselves on their anti-racist credentials. Why then is there growing support for a party whose candidates expressed such overt racism towards one of Britain’s minority communities?

I just Googled it and apparently Zac said it in an interview for the Big Issue in 2024. Subsequently reported by various sources such as the Express:

Polanski's Green Party plans to give migrants Universal Basic Income of up to £1,600 a month in a scheme critics brand 'madness'.

Immigrants would be given a regular cash payment by British taxpayers without needing to become citizens, under plans drawn up by the Green Party.

Documents reveal that the left-wing outfit, currently polling at 18%, would hand a monthly payment of up to £1,600, called Universal Basic Income (UBI), to anyone in the country without settled status, or who have a non-visitor visa.

The party's boss, Zack Polanski, said such a scheme would be worth around £1,200 to £1,600 per month. Setting out his plans in a 2024 article for the Big Issue magazine, he said: "A universal basic income policy is simple yet transformative: it would ensure every citizen receives an unconditional recurring payment. While the exact amount is up for debate, it would broadly align with the minimum wage – around £1,200 to £1,600 per month."

It must be true because they said so in the Express.

From the article above:

There are eyewitness testimonies of Hamas fighters raping women and subsequently shooting them. In 2024, the UN’s Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Pramila Patten, described how her team “conducted confidential interviews with 34 individuals, including survivors and witnesses of the 7 October attacks, released hostages, first responders and health and service providers. It visited four attack sites — as well as the morgue to which the bodies of victims were transferred — and reviewed over 5,000 photographic images and some 50 hours of footage of the attacks.

It was scrupulous in its reporting, saying that while some incidents of rape could not be verified and two reports of sexual assaults at Kibbutz Be’eri were unfounded, “The team also found convincing information that sexual violence was committed against hostages, and has reasonable grounds to believe that such violence may still be ongoing against those in captivity. While there are reasonable grounds to believe that conflict-related sexual violence occurred in the Nova music festival site, Route 232, and kibbutz Re’im”

In what context is it okay to say that the attack on the Synagogue was revenge? Or that it takes effort not to br antisemitic? Or to defend the October 7th attacks? Or to say that there are too many Jews in government?

The statements have not been fully quoted or linked, they've been paraphrased. For example the only works in quotation marks for the first one are "not anti-Semitism” and "revenge".

There is an inifinite number of ways a video posted on social media could use those words and join them together, with an infinite number of possible meanings. It's not my responsibility to consider them all. If you want to link to the video then I'll happily watch it and form my own opinion.

No it's not necessarily antisemitic to be against Netanyahu or the war in Gaza. However, it is antisemitic to do things like deny that Jewish women were raped by Hamas or to call Zionism a "mental illness" or some of the other horrible things Green candidates have done or said.

You don't seem to understand how quotation works. The only thing they put in quotation marks is this:

"A universal basic income policy is simple yet transformative: it would ensure every citizen receives an unconditional recurring payment. While the exact amount is up for debate, it would broadly align with the minimum wage – around £1,200 to £1,600 per month."

It says nothing whatsover about giving it to migrants, legal or illegal, on the contrary referring specifically to "citizens". It says nothing about whether it's a Green policy intended to be rolled out, or just something being debated. All of the interpretation and context around it is filled in by the Express, in order to make the reader assume that this small amount of actual information means what they want them to think it means.

Don't you think it a bit strange that the Express has written and article ABOUT something somebody supposedly said in another article, and haven't thought to link to the original article itself? That's what any decent news source willing to have their veracity scrutinised would do.

They clearly don't have a problem with antisemitism. That's the only reason they've got the tit whisperer as their puppet leader; they haven't chosen him for his intellect, economic know how, charisma, solid respectable professional background or leadership skills. He's a mask for their antisemitism and that of their supporters. He's the political embodiment of "some of my best friends are black".

I don't believe anyone doesn't realise this.

Or, or - it is just possible to be Jewish and hold progressive views on the environment and gender.

It must not be true because EvolvingDoor said so on Mumsnet.

And you don't seem to understand how burden of proof works. It may well be true that he said those things. But until there is evidence (such as a link to the original source, or verified quotation of a whole unedited passage clearly stating them) then there is no reason to believe he did. And paraphrasing by a Tory gutter rag with an obvious agenda and no culture of respect for truth whatsoever, is a long way from evidence.

ThatCyanCat · 24/04/2026 16:58

Twiglets1 · 24/04/2026 16:40

Despite only reading the first sentence apparently🙄

Tbh their first post was nothing but a rather flabby, overlong demonisation of the very concept of the existence of a Jewish state under any government at all, followed by the entirely predictable "and that's why we can't take antisemitism seriously, what a pity, hem hem", so now I'm giving them all the attention and energy they deserve.

The Greens want to declare it racist to have a single Jewish state even alongside a Palestinian one, even with a 20% non Jewish population who still have full equal rights as Israeli citizens (as they should, of course) and among a sea of Arab and Islamic countries. They can honestly piss right off. And yes, I repeat, literally nobody doesn't realise why they've parked the Tit Whisperer at the head of this, despite all the "but he JOO" wibbling. The insult to our intelligence is almost as bad as the perversion, antisemitism and sheer fucking lunacy in that now rancid, Reform Mark II party.

I take it all back. I have been absolutely floored by this incredibly intellectually honest and good faith argument. Dave is just very progressive in wanting men in women's spaces, and his appointment as loony in chief is all because of everything he keeps saying and doing about the environment. His ethnicity is totally inconsequential, as you've just proven by totally not weaponising it in a completely absurd post.

Twiglets1 · 24/04/2026 17:09

@EvolvingDoor why don't you read the Green party immigration policy, it confirms what Zack said in his interview to the Big Issue about treating all migrants as citizens. This would give them resource to public funds and the right to vote:

Our updated migration policy complements the rewritten Refugee and Asylum policy and details how migrants who are not refugees or asylum-seekers are to be treated.

The current hostile environment is designed to ensure migrants are discouraged from staying in the UK. After years of repeated applications and large fees, many who do finally reach settled or citizenship status will have developed an understandable distrust and dislike of the Home Office.

Instead we propose a fair and humane alternative which treats all new migrants as potential citizens and ensures that they feel at home here.

The Green Party in government will:

  1. Implement a fair and humane system of managed immigration
  2. Treat all migrants as if they are citizens
  3. Give all residents the right to vote
  4. Help families to be together
  5. Dismantle the Home Office
  6. Abolish the No Recourse to Public Funds condition
  7. Abolish the ten year route to settlement
  8. Stop the profiteering from application fees
  9. Stop putting people in prison because of their immigration status
  10. Accept our responsibility for the climate emergency and support the people forced to move

The article refers to tweets she made and doesn't quote the whole tweets, so it would depend on a number of things such as whether she's referring to specific allegations of rape (some of which were shown to be false) or to whether any acts of rape occurred at all.

If it's the latter, I'm pretty sure she's wrong.

Your argument is ridiculous.

‘He's a mask for their antisemitism' is genuinely one of the more absurd things I've read on here. You're claiming a party deliberately chose a Jewish leader as a human shield — that's not a critique of the Greens, it's a conspiracy theory. And it’s absurd.

Except it's true - no other reason in a party as antisemitic as they are - and you are simply asserting otherwise, which isn't so much an absurd argument as simply no argument at all.

As I already said, there is nobody who doesn't realise it. There are only people who don't think it matters.

Continue to imagine anyone is fooled at...well, perhaps not your peril, but certainly the peril of British Jews. The Greens will never get into power, obviously, but they can still do some damage while Reform punches much harder as the arse's other cheek. God help us all if the two of them realise they're actually the same and collaborate.

YANBU. It’s scary.

More than ever, Jews need Israel as a safe homeland. And these Green anti-Semites are demonstrating exactly why.

One of Lambeth Green Saiqa Ali’s posts (now deleted’) was:
”A caricature of a Jewish Israeli crying, along with the caption: “Don’t you know the rules?? We went through the Holocaust and now we get to kill everyone, forever!!” “

And many of the Lambeth demography on her patch, which has been absolutely plagued by Labour’s LTNs causing 4 hour gridlock in the High rd (before being abandoned) and now a 2 year rebuilding of the high road to install dangerous floating bus stops etc , with shops closing down because bus stops are closed and the pavement is fenced off, are saying they will vote Green rather than Labour.

Why vote Green rather than LibDem?

Madeness. IMO.

How absolutely disgusting.

How anybody could vote for this person, or any political party that would suffer their inclusion - as a candidate, FFS - beggars belief. I can only conclude that anybody who would do so thinks that vile, racist antisemitism is just tickety-boo as far as they are concerned.
