Things people do that just baffle you

What does either a specific person in your life, or just the general public do, you just don't understand why they do it, and you either can't ask them or you've tried to ask them and they can't tell you?

Write it here and maybe someone else that also does it can tell you why, or has an idea as to why.

Here are mine:

Why do my neighbours across the street bring their bins outside a full 24hrs early? They are retired, home most of the day, go in and out of their house five or six times during that 24hr period, but bring their bins out early Monday morning when they don't get picked up until Tuesday morning?

Why do people talk on their phones on speakerphone in public, what is the purpose?

I would like to know why my husband closes the plug in the bathroom sink when he brushes his teeth. He then leaves the plug closed and wanders off, so the sink has an inch of of toothpaste spit and water which I have to put my fingers in to open the plug and drain away. Just why? There's absolutely no need to close the plug when brushing your teeth. He appears to be as baffled as I am as to the reasoning behind it.

He thinks Jaws might jump out the plughole and eat him. I had that same fear as a child

People that comment on pregnant woman’s bodies and tell you that you’re looking really big or really small. “Wow, you’re getting so big!” “3 months left - more like 3 weeks!” “Twins, surely!” I don’t know how people have the nerve to say these things.

It’s a bit like walking into a room and saying wow Dave you’re looking massive today

An ex of mine had a mate that commented on my weight (although I wasn't pregnant) every time he saw me. The last time it happened he said, "Oh, Zimunya, you've put on weight!" and I said, "Yes, Dave, and I see you've lost more hair." He was going bald and very sensitive about it. His wife tried to tell me how upset he was, and how I shouldn't have said it, and I said, "He commented on my appearance, and I commented on his appearance - it's exactly the same thing." He stopped saying it after that!

Surely this is the very definition of more money than sense.

It's £3.50 a fortnight. Not exactly break the bank money. Hosing out bins isn't a chore I ever want to do ever.

usedtobeaylis · Today 13:10

When women online read about other women having issues in their relationships and feel the need to reply with how amazing their particular husband is. "I actually had to ask my husband to stop looking after me so well" or a variation thereof. It's incredibly tone deaf. Baffling and unnecessary.

Delivery men who ring the doorbell twice and then also hammer the door with their fist. Baffling and unnecessary.

I agree with the car park one.

On the same theme I went to the cinema one time with my husband for a daytime showing (weekday, we had the day off for his birthday). Went into the screen and we were the only ones there. Great we thought, sat down. Just before the film started a lone bloke came in AND SAT RIGHT NEXT TO US. So weird. The only explanation we could come up with afterwards was that he was an ardent rule follower and could only fathom sitting in the specified seat for his ticket.

Also people who stand up and clattering around with their bags 10 mins before the train arrives at the stop then stand by the doors looking all miserable and uncomfortable when they could have stayed in comfort a while longer. It wouldn't usually bother me but it always seems to be the people who sit in the window seats and so the aisle passenger (ie me) has to move to let them out, then sit down again.

Ditto knobs who stand up as soon as the plane lands even if they are seated waaay back and won't be leaving the plane for another 10 mins. No doubt the same ones who rush to the boarding desk when business class passengers/passengers travelling with young children/ boarding group A etc are called and stand there blocking it where the actual boarding group passengers shuffle around them. I feel like yelling "you are not getting on the plane any faster by doing that!"

Aaaahhhh I feel better now.

This reminds me of a flight I was on in February. We landed and were taxiing toward the gate. The pilot made an announcement that we would be slightly delayed, as the plane leaving from our gate was still there, and we had to wait until the gate was clear. The plane came to a stop. I looked out my window—we were nowhere near the gate. Cue 100 seat belts clicking and even a few people quickly emptying out overhead lockers. The flight attendants had to tell everyone to stow their luggage and get belted back in until we were at the gate. 🤦‍♀️

why do people take such an interest and display bafflement about things done by other people that don't affect them or concern them?

LostFuse · Today 13:11

Anjelika · Today 12:59

But surely that would be the same if they drive forward into their drive, assuming they have passengers every now and again?

Passengers can get out before driving forward onto the drive.

I am wondering why some people really really procrastinate when they have taken the day OFF work in order to focus on a critical piece of life admin (applying for passports for dual-citizen DCs) and instead they are on MN and considering going to the local cafe for a sandwich and a glass of wine when they are perfectly aware that they need to Get This Shit sorted or their entire summer holiday might possibly be in jeopardy.

(cough cough. This may be quite specific to me. I am a shocking procrastinator though).

In my case its ADHD. I need that pressure and adrenaline to get me going. In my world it's either now or not now, the future seems miles away. Ive tried to change but it still happens every bloody time!! Or I just completely forget!

Re cleaning bins, we get ours done. Mainly because of dog poo - yes it's bagged up but the bins still stink. Especially in warm weather. 😷

Speaking of dog poos, why do some people bag up their dog poo and then just dump the bag on the ground? I see it out walking all the time and does my head in!

The one's sitting in supermarket car parks, I have to say I've only really noticed men of a certain age doing this which makes me assume they're above shopping with the wife or helping with such tasks. There is a fella I see weekly waiting for (I assume) his wife in the car and he really bugs me because he's parked in a parent and baby space. I've looked, there's no car seats, he's just being entitled. I have an irrational hatred for this man I have never spoken to and have made a lot of assumptions on...

You wouldn't need to. It's not that everyone else is regularly washing out their own bins. It's that bins don't need washing

Sahara123 · Today 13:13

I didn’t realise that putting your bins out early was such a crime ! Ours often go out early as we put them out when we remember it’s bin day tomorrow. Does it really matter ? How long in advance is an acceptable time to put ones bins out ? I don’t clean them though. Probably would be in trouble for having manky bins !

I suspect that for me too tbh. DS has inattentive ADHD. I certainly see alot of that in myself also.

Worried they will forget the to put out the bin if they don't do it first thing.

Talking on speaker phone because they can't be bothered to hold the phone to their ear, or just think their life is fascinating to all around them.

My OH waits in the car while I go food shopping. He does a drink shop by himself. And that is the way we both like it. I don’t drive. So he drives me there. When we were very young we used to shop together but now I prefer to do it myself. And he prefers it to. Nothing whatsoever with thinking shopping is beneath him. He will often pop out to do a top up shop. But that is why he is sat in the car.

But surely in today's world of phone reminders and smart watches and Alexa's and googles etc etc and you set a reminder for yourself?
My Google reminds me every Monday night at 5pm, 6pm and 7:30pm 🤣

But maybe if they're older people, they can't deal with it.
They do have a daughter in her 20s at home though!

I understand that. Relying on your own memory for things seems vitally important to me as you age. You need to use your brain calls. Phone reminders and Alex won't help you fend off memory issues.

ImthatBoleyngirl · Today 13:16

Fot me it's people who dont merge like a zipper and then moan that people are pushing in. If they wanted you to pull over earlier, they'd close the road earlier! A roundabout and junction was completely blocked up the other day because everyone insisted on queuing in the one lane. It's in the damn highway code people!!!

Retired people doing their supermarket shops on Saturdays 🙈.

My grandparents were convinced the stock was "better" on a Saturday hence choosing to go then. Absolutely no convincing them otherwise!

Why do so many of my neighbours drive to our local corner shop which is approximately a 3 - 4 minute walk?

Oh my God my neighbour does this! He's probably 60 something but I see him doing his garden and seems very fit but I see him get in the car every day and come back within 10 minutes with his little bag of shopping.

Bingbangboo · Today 13:18

People who sit right next to, or in front of you, on empty beaches. We had a couple pitch up right next to us and they then built a line of sand castles along the edge of our beach mat to mark out their territory! We were stunned into silence, we just sat watching them do it. When my parents brought the four lively children with us back up from the sea they soon changed their minds. Lots of huffing and giving us dirty looks until they then picked up their stuff and moved a few metres in front of us, but they sat facing us, with their backs to the sea. The beach was largely empty apart from us - just why?

Why do people not lock their doors?

I rarely lock my door as I lose keys regularly, also I am more scared of burning to death in a fire because I can’t find a key than I am of being burgled.

Until recently I had a big dog so felt pretty safe but he’s died and I am trying to make more effort with the doors.

The family across the road to me are all young and yet they'd rather risk a parking ticket than walk round for a pint of milk 😳

I have those reminders set too, and often need them but I usually put the bins out as early as we are allowed (4pm day before) and will often take them to the edge of our drive before then. Putting the bins out starts inside the house for me, with emptying the bathroom/kitchen/food/wastepaper bins and sorting the recycling that has accumulated since I last went to the outside bins. And then, because I am on a long-term decluttering project I try to fill all the bins to recycle or trash as much as will fit in.

I prefer to get the job done as early as possible in the day because I don't enjoy it. Once I am tired from the rest of the day's activities I am likely to keep putting it off and end up running round in pyjamas at the last minute, and possibly have to juggle 3 bins and 2 recycling sacks in the dark and rain! 😂

kscarpetta · Today 13:19

The empty car park thing is just because some people need a car next to them to be able to park.

Just keep it on a hook next to the door.

But not in a position that anyone could stick a coat hanger through the letterbox.

Also retired people that go away in the school
holidays! My in laws do this. Blows my mind. This is our last year of formal school as uni holidays much longer and can’t wait to get away from that restriction! Roll on southern Europe in June..!
