AIBU to worry about being stranded in Sweden and cancelling girls trip? (Fuel concerns)

I am going on a long planned for trip to Stockholm with my girlfriends at the end of next week (3 days). I'm really worried that there might be issues coming back on the plane in terms of fuel shortage and I might get stranded. My DH thinks I'm being ridiculous and that it's more to do with the fact I don't like leaving our 6 year old for a weekend (it's true that I always really miss him when I'm away and if I'm being honest, don't love being a flight away! But this is probably ridiculous in itself) AIBU to be afraid I might get stranded and to cancel the trip? My friends are flying in from other airports so I could technically make up an excuse, though I don't like doing that

Please don't be a flake

Ruthietuthie · 21/04/2026 14:53

Yes, completely unreasonable. People are flying all over the place, everyday. If airlines were to run out of fuel, that would be predictable and factored in. They wouldn't simply fly you out and then say, "Whoops, just realized we have no fuel! Sorry, you are stranded forever in Sweden!!!"

Swiftie1878 · 21/04/2026 14:53

Put your big girl pants on.

Haha 😂 I probably should

That sounds unlikely and there's worse places to be stuck.

Do you have anxiety?

AnyOtherNameButMyRealOne · 21/04/2026 14:55

Bluntly, yes! and I would think very poorly of you as a friend if you did this to me/my friend group.

But, only you know your friends and how they would take it; what has been booked and if there are any financial implications on the others if you cancel so late; if the fuel shortage is the real reason, or if there is a real underlying issue/concern; how the anxiety of fuel shortage would impact your whole trip whilst you were there...

Anxiety, on and off but well managed. But yes I do overthink stuff massively.

Edited

There's two others who are also best mates so it wouldn't ruin the trip but yes it'd be a shame really to miss it. We've got a hostel room for 3 and I'd still pay my share of course

why did you plan or agree to go then?

Teeheehee1579 · 21/04/2026 14:58

You absolutely need to go and you’ll have a great time when you are there. I get not wanting to leave your 6 year old but you can’t use fuel shortage as an excuse to get out of it and long term it won’t be good for you to just not attend things with good friends. I would think very poorly of you as a friend if you pulled out and with that excuse. Go and have fun.

Aposterhasnoname · 21/04/2026 14:58

There will not be any significant flight cancellations in the next couple of weeks, and even if there was, the airline have to get you to your destination as close as possible to the original time, even if that means booking you on a rival airline.

ZippyPeer · 21/04/2026 14:59

Agree with PP, don't be a flake.

Being this worried about fuel seems disproportionate

Owlcat42 · 21/04/2026 15:02

There are dozens of airlines operating between the UK - if that's where you are - and Stockholm. It's very, very unlikely you'd have a problem, but even if you did you'd get back on another flight - your airline is still responsible for getting you home one way or another.

Please don't worry and enjoy your trip (ps the Abba museum and the Vasa museum are both great!)

SunnyRedSnail · 21/04/2026 15:02

@Isthisasillyquestion1 stop reading the Daily Mail and go and have fun!

ilovesooty · 21/04/2026 15:03

You're not going to be stranded there. Just go.

Stockholm is gorgeous, don't miss out on seeing it with your friends because of hysterical news reports.
Loosen your girdle and enjoy the cinnamon buns.

SunnyRedSnail · 21/04/2026 15:11

@Isthisasillyquestion1 well worst case scenario, Google Maps says public transport will take you 23 hours to get back to the UK.

Whenthemorningcomes · 21/04/2026 15:16

I think it can be easy to be anxious about situations that you don’t have insight into. It might help to know (as others have pointed out above)

  • if it did reach a point where flight were cancelled it wouldn’t be sudden, they would build up to it
  • there are other transport options to get back to UK (train and tunnel and/or ferry)
SabrinaThwaite · 21/04/2026 15:22

You’d be mad not to go - it’s an amazing city. Take the ferry out to Vaxholm for an afternoon (abour an hour each way), it’s a very scenic trip.

Feelingworried26 · 21/04/2026 15:51

I wouldn't take a non essential flight at the moment with a young child at home.

EvelynBeatrice · 21/04/2026 16:00

The airline is highly unlikely to fly you out on a return flight if they think they may be unable to get you back - so says pilot sister.

Also most U.K. airlines get their aviation fuel from America not through Hormuz Strait.

Isthisasillyquestion1 · 21/04/2026 16:04

She’s not leaving the child to fend for itself. Another parent is there. If there were fuel shortages she’d get home pretty quickly by another means - but remember everyone was saying a couple of weeks ago that there’d be petrol rationing and reporting on here garages with no fuel. Didn’t happen.
Aviation fuel shortages may happen but as others have said if they do they’ll be planned for. You’re more likely to have the outbound flight cancelled by the airline @Isthisasillyquestion1 - they don’t want to have you in Sweden and have to find another way of getting you back!
