To remember when you didn’t have to pay separately for toner?! 💁🏼‍♀️

It’s been a few years since I had highlights but I’m thinking of getting them put in again.

I was very surprised to see on the booking website that I needed to ‘add toner service below as this is an essential part of the colour’ - for £30!

What?! I never used to pay for toner, it was part and parcel of getting the colour. Apparently now it’s the norm to pay for it!

Do you also have to pay separately for the foil squares?! 😅

Yes, it just used to be half head highlights all in. And it looked better without the toner, I don't see the purpose of it. I'm going back to box dye, I can do a better job myself.

poetryandwine · 20/04/2026 04:04

That sounds v expensive!

Pippa12 · 20/04/2026 04:48

I can never understand a hairdresser price list. At my hairdressers it appears it would cost >£100 for colour, cut and blow dry but actually costs £69. I think the cut and blow must be included in the ‘highlights’ price. Toner must be included at the time of colour but extra if you go back for a between appointments. It does not say this anywhere on the list tho.

My bugbear is that if I have mine cut at the same time as the colour, the full ‘cut and finish’ amount is added to the bill - it’s getting washed and dried anyway as part of the colour so I feel like the cut should be reduced.

SixSevenShutUp · 20/04/2026 07:13

I can remember when the salon I used to go to would charge an extra 50p for conditioner back when it was fancy and not something I thought was an essential. I even get a free coffee now, which is very swish.

This is a very good point!

I do a purple shampoo at home after to save on the additional toner cost !

AmazingGreatAunt · 20/04/2026 08:33

I always thought my regular hairdresser was quite expensive as I have been paying the same prices for about 10 years. Cut and blow dry €50, cut, highlights and blow dry €100.
Then I had my hair cut in a slightly different location, as that was where I was at the time. Came to €75 with shampoo charged extra, just a not very good cut and a not very good blow dry.
Mind you, I always wondered about tax evasion/money laundering with my regular hairdresser as he only takes cash now, but I have known him for well over 30 years, so clearly not a fly-by-night operation!

starrynightscoldmornings · 20/04/2026 08:35

My hairdresser wants to charge me £30 for a “gloss” to tone out the warmth in my brown hair.

Aye okay love, or I can buy a bottle of the same stuff from boots for £8.99 and do it as I please!

GingerBeverage · 20/04/2026 08:37

I remember having a rough dry for free and now it’s £10.
Skin test £15.

Surely they can't charge you for the skin test - it's their legal obligation!

HoppityBun · 20/04/2026 17:17

I remember when you were asked if you wanted conditioner and if you said yes, you got a squirt and were charged extra. Seems the wheel is coming full circle. Oh yes! and you were asked if you wanted a cup of coffee and charged for that, too.

HumberBridge2 · 20/04/2026 17:17

£15 for a skin test 😱

I did get charged extra for a toner once about 10 years ago- I did not go back. She did an awful job and it looked so awful, I should have complained. I agree it should be included in the price!!

Oh they charge alright. And it’s on an App.

Im just waiting for them to find a way to use AI for £25.

RS1987 · 20/04/2026 18:39

I pay it, and they ask as though it’s optional, but I honestly don’t know what it is or what it does

RS1987 · 20/04/2026 18:40

I use purple shampoo - do I need toner? Could save myself £15!

What do you mean by tone it out please? I'm thinking of trying that glazed stuff. I would do it at home.

Yeah, they charge for toner now

I don't get it because they basically tell you that you have to have it. I have never had anyone say to me or you can do without that. They tell you it's essential so I don't know why they don't just include it in the price.

not seen anyone charging for skin test which doesn't sound legal

Also, no one round here charges for a rough dry
