To just hate putting the washing away

Folding it, sorting it, hanging it.

It’s my least favourite job, just ahead of making the bed.

I hate pairing the socks. That’s my worst job

CeciliaMars · 19/04/2026 18:13

I hate it too. I have 3 girls and their clothes all look the same so I have to check all the labels. Not fun. They do all help though.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 19/04/2026 18:14

Agreed. I do it at least 3x a week, so really not letting it build up, but somehow it always seems such a mammoth task 😬. And when DH does it, he always gets my boys stuff mixed up which drives me mad!

DP has spent the day washing the cars, and doing the garden, which id rather not do but this is the trade off 😩

I hate it too! Then when I do put it away I get annoyed at myself as it only takes a few minutes 😂

Ah, see we outsource that one! Gardener does the mowing. I take my car to the car wash and DH pays the 13 and 10 year olds to do his (I prefer a professional job, DH less fussy!!).

We do everyone's laundry separately for this reason - drives me nuts having to look at labels and separate between everyone's stuff. Before anyone asks, everyone has their own basket and we put it on when it's a full load

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 19/04/2026 18:21

Do the laundry and clothes storage differently. I hang my hanger clothes to dry on hangers. So straight into the wardrobe without needing messing about.
I fold my clothes as they come off the line/rack and gather them in order. So all the pants folded, all the jumpers folded. Then put the stacks of clothes on the shelf they live on.
Each person’s washing is done separately now as well, so no need to sort. This was a huge time saver when it started. The eldest boys did their own, I did a load with the next kids’ stuff. DH and I each do our own. We generally need a load each a week, ending going in with whoever’s is the smaller load. All the whites come to me to make one occasional whites load.

Basically try not to touch things more often than necessary. Out of the machine onto a hanger on the line. Off the line into the wardrobe. Super fast.

Snap.

Yes I agree as I sit staring a mountain of washing on my sofa that’s I’ve been thinking I’ll get that done in a minute. I started it earlier at lunch time but then got side tracked then went out for a few hrs. I’ve just come home and made dinner. Gonny have to do it now 😭

How strange, I literally had this thought today about giving everyone a separate washing basket and doing each person's as it filled. What puts me off is needing to have everything done for ironing on a Sunday as I'm absolutely not doing that hideous task midweek (I definitely can't get away with not ironing either!). We have limited drying space and a washer dryer so I have to pace it!

WhatAGreatDay · 19/04/2026 20:04

On Mumsnet putting away the washing is always described as a big chore or people have piles of clean laundry all over the place. I don't get it. It takes 10 minutes. Even when all my 3 kids were at home it wasn't a big deal.

I don't iron so that helps, I guess.

Hang shirts as they come out of the machine. I haven’t ironed in 35 years.

Curlygirl06 · 19/04/2026 20:46

It's my hated job too. I put it in baskets, leave them upstairs then do it once a week. Top tip- with my dh's work clothes, I put them together in a pile for each day, so shirt, pants, socks, stick them on top of his dresser and ta-da! Don't have to put it away then.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 19/04/2026 20:54

I enjoy it!

This is what we do, it saves so much time. Kids each have a basket in their room and it gets washed when full and then it can just go straight back into their room and be put away. Separating clothes is so time-consuming otherwise.

Kitchenbattle · 19/04/2026 21:07

This is why I only do laundry on a Saturday and it’s all dried, ironed and put away by Sunday evening depending on what’s going on! Once a week is plenty for me 😅

AliceNotInChains · 19/04/2026 21:07

I’ve turned my box room into a walk in wardrobe so I just take the clean laundry up there and throw it into the room. DH and I just search for stuff we need when we need it.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 19/04/2026 21:08

The Americans have the right idea, they have their laundry rooms upstairs so no washing really moves round the house!!! I’d love an upstairs utility room for laundry that sounds perfect!!

piscofrisco · 19/04/2026 21:13

I hate it. Once I’ve started it takes ten to 15 minutes. But in reality it’s three days of being annoyed by seeing it sitting around but not having the will to do anything about it.
also the dishwasher which I do on average twice a day.

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 19/04/2026 21:22

I don't mind it. But then I live alone these days. Out the washing machine, on to coat hangers and the line. Move to the bedroom to be hung up/put in draws.

Buy similar socks and you can stop doing that

I don't get it either. And it's such an easy job that unless very young, your children can fold and put away their own things so you don't even have to do much.

I suspect the people who find this a massive job are also the ones who have 14 loads of laundry a week and iron everything.

TheCurious0range · 19/04/2026 21:27

Are you my husband? He said to me a few days ago I'm WFH Thursday, off Friday and I'll be around more than you Saturday so I'll get most of the washing done, so there are now baskets of towering clean washing getting increasingly creased in the spare bedroom. I'm off tomorrow so will spend a good hour re folding sorting and putting away, I just put a pod cast on. I'd rather do a standard basket at a time though not 5!

I hang everything to dry as soon as it's done. Makes no odds. Everything dries creased as hell. I've been at this job for 25 years and I've always had to iron to look in any way presentable. If I can get away with not ironing stuff I absolutely will. But even the bedding (the duvet covers and pillow cases at least!) needs ironing as otherwise the bed just looks a shithole.
I do draw the line at anything that isn't visable though! And only do pjs if we have guests or going away!
