To just hate putting the washing away

Folding it, sorting it, hanging it.

It’s my least favourite job, just ahead of making the bed.

I hate it. It’s constant. I particularly hate turning socks the right way out.

MooFroo · 19/04/2026 22:26

Me too!
luckily DC are old enough tho collect own loads and do their own do just me and DH. Washing is the only job DH doesn’t actually do - he does an his share of everything else but washing or putting away.

Morepositivemum · 19/04/2026 22:28

Bimmering
We do everyone's laundry separately for this reason - drives me nuts having to look at labels and separate between everyone's stuff. Before anyone asks, everyone has their own basket and we put it on when it's a full load

Oh my hid this is genius- I spend my life checking labels!!!

I hate pairing the socks. That’s my worst job

That is the absolute worst job ever!! I hate when I have to get the bag of odds out to sort them 😢

AliceNotInChains · 19/04/2026 21:07

I’ve turned my box room into a walk in wardrobe so I just take the clean laundry up there and throw it into the room. DH and I just search for stuff we need when we need it.

Do you just toss the basket of clean clothes into a massive pile in the middle of the floor ready to rummage through at your own leisure? 🤔🤭

Heraldry · 19/04/2026 22:42

I have hated putting it all away for decades, the constant checking of labels, have never thought of doing each person’s separately!!!

SunCreamQueenie · 19/04/2026 22:47

Putting it away i can cope with, taking it out of machine and hanging it gets on my last nerve!

On Mumsnet putting away the washing is always described as a big chore or people have piles of clean laundry all over the place. I don't get it. It takes 10 minutes. Even when all my 3 kids were at home it wasn't a big deal.

I don't iron so that helps, I guess.

It did only take me about ten minutes but I still hate it

I refuse to wash socks unless they are the right way out and not screwed up in a ball. They just linger at the bottom of their laundry baskets. Didn't take long for DH and DC to realise what they needed to do to get their socks washed.

Sounds more like a floordrobe.

I’ve told everyone I wash them however they come. How it goes into the laundry bag is how it goes into the machine. If their socks are scrunched up they’ll not wash very well. And I just pair them inside out if that’s how they are. Seems to work fine!

Talipesmum · 20/04/2026 07:08

Laundry was a hated chore for me till I got decent earbuds and got into audiobooks - now it’s the perfect thing to get on with while listening to stories. Suitably mindless so I can concentrate properly. Even all the putting away / hanging up etc.

My20sportraitlady · 20/04/2026 07:18

I have a unit like the toy units with fabric baskets you can get from IKEA but without the baskets, and each family member is assigned a cubby hole in the unit - plus one for kitchen towels, bedding type stuff - and two wall mounted drying racks (from Julu). These are next to each other. I take each item off the rack, work out whose it is (takes less than a second, usually) fold it and put it in their cubby hole. The kids empty their cubbies periodically or if necessary I dump the full cubby contents on their bed.

It's so much better than pre-cubbies.

Putting clothes away is not my favourite ( nothing cleaning or household related is) but it is not close to the tasks I dislike most. Anything laundry related is fine really.

I absolutely dont iron anything either. The washing is done, hung up immediately it is washed to dry then put away.

The jobs I loathe the most are vacuuming and cooking

I wonder why different people hate different things in this way when they aren't particularly onerous?

I don't mind sorting the washing at all but I absolutely loathe emptying the dishwasher which, again, only takes a few minutes.

I actually understand why I like sorting the washing. I think it's because my mother used to do the whole week's wash on a Monday and then dump it all in an armchair in the lounge. I used to like that sorting it out meant the room was uncluttered again, it was satisfying to put it into piles and other people were appreciative. I guess I still have the same associations.
We didn't have a dishwasher when I was a child so I don't have a similar memory :)

I hang everything to dry as soon as it's done. Makes no odds. Everything dries creased as hell. I've been at this job for 25 years and I've always had to iron to look in any way presentable. If I can get away with not ironing stuff I absolutely will. But even the bedding (the duvet covers and pillow cases at least!) needs ironing as otherwise the bed just looks a shithole.
I do draw the line at anything that isn't visable though! And only do pjs if we have guests or going away!

Hang on, are you saying you iron pyjamas?!! If so, why????

Then again, I am 55 and have not ironed bedding in my life, so 🤷🏼‍♀️😏

I think for me part of it is because you’re never truly done with the washing. Unless you do it all naked, of course! I tend to do it after my shower on a Sunday night because it’s a “clean” job and this is when I’m cleanest. So I shower, dry my hair and then put it away. So by that point I already have my clothes from Sunday in the washing basket, plus I’m wearing pyjamas that will need washing in two days time too. So by the time I make the bed and put it away, I’ve already got stuff in the washing basket!

No! I don't! Only if they will be seen by guests or if we are visiting someone. Which is rare! Last time I ironed them was on my wedding day (last July!) as I didn't want my wedding photos with me in my crumbled pjs!
My SDs mum irons her knickers and socks. That's just taking it too far!

5128gap · 20/04/2026 07:52

I used to. I now have a system that makes it bearable. I take each load straight out of the dryer and fold or hang it immediately missing out the basket stage. I also got better storage and got rid of stuff, as a major factor in my dislike was that without the washing basket acting as an extra wardrobe I never had enough room for everything. A place for everything helps so much.

Yes, there is a chair in there so I aim for that but it’s normally pretty full so most of it goes on the floor. It’s a clean floor 🤷‍♀️

Yes - it’s a cross between a chairdrobe and a floordrobe - nobody goes in there but DH, myself and my sister so it doesn’t matter really
