AIBU to be surprised that some people are still paid weekly?

I was talking to a family member yesterday evening and throughout conversation she told me that both her and her dh are paid weekly! I didn’t think anyone paid weekly anymore. I’m so so surprised. I’ve been paid monthly since my first job! Anyone else paid weekly? I would find that hard to manage I reckon.

It’s rarer now but more common in lower paid work.

Reminds me of my first job in the 1990s and picking up my wages, in cash, from the cash office on a Friday!

Yellowpingu · 19/04/2026 10:43

Yes, I’m paid weekly and not only that I’m the one who does the payroll each week. I’m off this week so on Friday I had to run 2 lots so that we’re all paid when I’m off. Luckily I’m never off work for more than 10 days. There is someone who can do it in my absence but I’d end up on the phone talking them through it.
Edited to add I work for a construction firm with 10 employees, most of them are on over £40k a year. Aside from our apprentice I’m the lowest paid member of staff.

TheDelcosArabiaNSoul · 19/04/2026 10:45

Not long ago I worked at a place weekly pay and a card stamping clock in/out machine.

Evaka · 19/04/2026 10:45

Still quite common in roles with hourly pay. Less so in salaried roles. Fortnightly is still common in parts of the public/charity sector which i bloody love the sound of.

DreamyJade · 19/04/2026 10:49

Royal Mail postmen are still paid weekly, though they’re moving to monthly for new staff. I agree it’s bizarre and it must be more difficult to budget on weekly pay.

Statsquestion1 · 19/04/2026 10:50

I have budgeted monthly all my life I’m genuinely baffled by how I would do it if I had weekly pay. There’s definitely a way of doing it but I don’t think I would be successful 😅

My last job l got paid every 2 weeks, it was great, even if l ran out of money was never long to wait for payday.
Only pain was direct debits which l have set up to come out on 28th as that was when l was paid in the previous job, so l had to make sure there was enough money in bank on that day.

OneFairBee · 19/04/2026 10:52

I’m agency and get paid weekly. So hard to budget!

TeenLifeMum · 19/04/2026 10:52

I’m really surprised by this. Dd1 has a Saturday job. She was in a garden centre and now a cafe and has only been paid monthly ever.

Edited

I too run payroll for a construction firm. I am paid monthly, as are all the office staff but the site workers are all paid weekly. I think it’s all part of the BESA agreement.

its even harder when I’m on holiday as it’s rare that everyone works a 38 hour week. I have to go through time sheets every week to calculate hours, travel time & overtime.

Iwantsandybeachesandgoodfood · 19/04/2026 10:54

My husband works in construction and gets paid weekly, I’m a teacher paid monthly (he earns more than me). I love it! The big bills get paid when I do and the daily living pot is always getting refilled. We share finances and it works well for us having both.

JabbaTheBeachHut · 19/04/2026 10:54

I'm paid monthly but my husband is paid weekly.

It's brilliant as it feels like a constant stream of wages coming in.

BlueMum16 · 19/04/2026 10:55

My kids both work for local council. Their part-time contracts are weekly pay.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 19/04/2026 10:57

I’ve always been paid monthly except for a job I had several years ago where I was paid fortnightly. I loved it! It felt like double pay every month! I found it so easy to budget as I still kept all direct debits at the beginning of the month, so the second payment felt like a bonus.

IDontHateRainbows · 19/04/2026 10:58

I was paid weekly when temping last year and LOVED it. So much easier to manage my finances when there's only ever 6 days or less to payday. February is a bummer though, when monthly paid staff effectively get a half week free.

IDontHateRainbows · 19/04/2026 11:00

I loved it so much that when I got moved to monthly pay I put it all in a savings account and release a bit every week. Not quite the same but im never in my overdraft now, and I always was before.

EBearhug · 19/04/2026 11:00

I had PT jobs with local and county council in my teens in the '80s, and even then, I was paid monthly, even when I was at the swimming pool, doing very varied hours and different rates (lifeguard and teaching.)

5to5 · 19/04/2026 11:00

I preferred weekly pay.

DeltaFlyer · 19/04/2026 11:00

My husband works in manufacturing and is paid weekly.
He's been in the same job for 26 years; when he started he had the choice of weekly or bi weekly then when monthly pay came in 10 years ago for them he had of option of changing it but the more recent employees get it monthly.
If he has a week off off on holiday pay they pay him 2 weeks wages the week before.
Must be a pain for the payroll person

Bringbackbuffy · 19/04/2026 11:02

Our company moved from weekly to monthly pay to cut down on payroll costs. Our lowest paid members of staff really struggled to budget and manage. We ended up bringing in a second firm called wagestream which would allow employees to then draw down part of their already earned pay in advance of payday should they need it (obviously at a cost to them).

It didn’t affect me but I thought it was appalling. Company saving money and passing on the associated costs directly to the employees that could least afford it.

hahabahbag · 19/04/2026 11:03

I’ve never been paid weekly, even when I worked for a construction and maintenance company we paid monthly. In hospitality it’s more common also still to be paid in cash though getting rarer. My local pub pays casual workers weekly and those on full time or part time contracts monthly, was talking about it yesterday by chance

Paud weekly, I love it, such a good pick me up every week has a payday! No impact to my budgeting, its just different.

AgnesX · 19/04/2026 11:13

My DS is an agency worker and is paid weekly. I think it's still quite common.

No I’m based in Ireland and most people I know are paid monthly.
