AIBU, Is my neighbour a CF?

Earlier this week my NDN knocked on our door to advise he was having some landscaping work done, and the workers would be spraying the garden with weedkiller. We have a cat that sometimes goes in the garden so he was letting us know so we could keep cat indoors.

I came home from work today to find a portaloo with the landscapers name on, on my land right up against my house. We are detached and have a strip of lawn between our houses then I have some paving (basically a path that goes nowhere) and a fence with no gate, as our access is at other side. The portaloo is sited on my side, and gives easy access to their gate so the workers can get in and out.

I'm rather bemused, if I was going to contract a company who were bringing their own loo:
A) I would find somewhere on my own plot to put it
B) if a) was not possible I would approach my neighbours and ask them very nicely if I could put a loo on their land

AIBU to expect that people don't put toilets on other people's land? Are my neighbours CF?

I've been round. I spoke to MrsNDN. I don't think had twigged the portaloo was on my land as it is next to their gate. When I pointed it out she was in a proper flap and was going to phone them straight awayto come and move it. I was very nice about it.

excellent! Just shows that people don't have to grin and bear it or put up with stuff.

Bit weird that the neighbours actually thought that was part of their land though, and not yours. Glad they listened and are sorting it. That’s how neighbours should behave!

Nice work OP! 👏🏼

@stichguru I see them everywhere for extensions being built, big landscaping jobs, seems nobody wants the workmen in their house 🙄

Hardly surprising. My brother allowed his builders, plumber and electricians to use his indoor toilet when he was having renovations done. At the time he had a job where he worked for 6 weeks on and 6 weeks off in Colombia so he wasn't always around to keep an eye on them.

He came back exhausted after a very difficult 6 weeks and a challenging and delayed journey, let himself in at the front door and was assailed by sewage stink. His downstairs toilet was full to the absolute brim with floating turds and loads of toilet paper, one of the two upstairs toilets was also blocked, all three toilets were absolutely filthy as were the towels. There were muddy footprints leading to the downstairs toilet and up the stairs to both the upstairs toilets.

Worst of all, they'd used every roll of toilet paper, leaving only the empty rolls, and when he went to the airing cupboard he found his stash of toilet paper had also gone, they'd been helping themselves and taking it home with them.

When he phoned to complain the builder blamed the plumbers and electricians, and they in turn blamed the builders and the other trades. Nobody accepted responsibility, they didn't even agree to come and unblock and clean them or pay him for all the stolen toilet paper.

So it's not completely unreasonable to be reluctant to allow strangers to use your indoor plumbing.

That's good that you've spoken to the neighbour and that she is doing something about it. If you didn't do anything the chances are that these landscapers would take further liberties around your property as it is a fairly substantial project and not just a day's work weeding and tidying.

it can happen. A part of what looks like my front garden actually belongs to my neighbour. It doesn't show obviously on the Land Registry paperwork but we did know before we bought the house because of the fenceline dividing the back gardens. I cultivate it by their permission. We decided before we bought that if a subsequent neighbour didn't want to continue the agreement, then we could manage without it but they could not because the strip is very narrow and any roof/gutter access for them means that they have to put ladders or scaffolding on my part

mmm I wouldn't allow trades to access my house like that unless i knew them very well!

I hope they move it now you’ve made them aware

tiptoethrutulips · 18/04/2026 16:12

It's only a great outcome if it's been moved onto their property today...

BillieWiper · 18/04/2026 16:31

godmum56 · 18/04/2026 12:10

again, why would you have to suggest an alternate placement? basically why would you care provided its off your property?

You wouldn't particularly. I'd just imagine I'd probably say something like 'you could put it there..' Not that I'd care especially just that if they were too daft to know what was and wasn't my property they might require guidance?

I have found that that kind of comment risks opening up the discussion about why the item cannot be put there and so on....the sort of "I can't because" or "yes but..." that I neither want not need. Of course I'd use please and thank you but I find it much quicker and easier to stick to "here is the problem and here is what I want done about it"

Yeah you're probably not wrong. It's just 'move it from my property, the boundary of which is here..'

I've got an issue with a neighbour who's put a marquee tent against my property for the last year. I think it's causing damp. This thread is inspiring me to finally do something about it. Problem is my house wall is in their back garden?!

Emmz1510 · 18/04/2026 17:40

Absolute cheeky fuckery! Presumably they don’t want the workmen using their loo but are happy from them to use the toilet on your land? Tell them to move it!

oh you have a bigger problem than a marquee!

Tuesdayschild50 · 18/04/2026 18:02

Eeeeewwwww tell them to get it moved the cheek of it .

Morganrae1 · 18/04/2026 18:05

How rude!! Get them to move it.

Devontownie · 18/04/2026 18:15

Are you being unfair? I would go mad!! Get it gone!

Isittimeformynapyet · 18/04/2026 18:24

Friendlygingercat · 18/04/2026 02:31

When the workmen were remodelling my kitchen they used the downstairs loo.

Tell next door to remove it or there will be a charge of £100 per day. By failure to remove they will have agred with your charges.

I always find that when money enters the picture a cf will backtrack. If they drag up the old chestnut about "Im your neighbour" tell them you are a businesswoman so lets leave that neighbour business on one side. If you want to strike a deal there has to be something in it for both of us otherwise you will be getting a bill.

Edited

I don't think "I am your neighbour" is an old chestnut 😄

Gawd, don't! They are actually perfectly reasonable really just young and kinda thoughtless at times. I just hate confrontation of any kind! X

Ewww gross they’ve probably propped it up there so it doesn’t blow over on the garden. Tell them to move it gross

but don't you need to sort out the boundary issue if a bit of your your house is in someone else's garden?

B1anche · 17/04/2026 21:56

Another MN post where a problem could have been resolved in 5 mins with a bit of communication. Why did you not go straight round and tell them to move it?

I thought that, why are they posting in here, the minute I saw it,I'd be straight round telling them to get it off my land immediately

Jorge14 · 18/04/2026 19:25

Yeah this is a massive no from me. I’m really accommodating & my neighbours have been great over the years but I’d say no to a loo on my land
