or just having a bad day?

Well i'm not having a bad day as such but here goes;
is it just me or does everyone else seem to have more money than u and are always boasting about what designer top they've bought there lo? I usually look in sale section or in george, this makes me feel guilty like i'm not giving my child the "best".
Also i give my baby jarred food, not all the time but alot. Which makes me feel crap again that i dont give my baby home made stuff. Sorry just had to have a rant, my friend's just bought her son 4 outfits for his cristening as she can't decided what to wear. My son hasnt had a new outfit for ages (he has plenty of clothes that fit, dont see the point in getting him more outfits till he needs them), i just dont have time to cook from scratch. I work part time and clean our house in the morning then go to baby clubs. I dont know how to cook properly, i've tried before; spent loads on raw stuff, spent ages cooking and only got a few portions that i froze for my son. AM i just a big fat crap mum?

No pinky you are not a crap mum, you're a real mum like the rest of us, doing the best you can.

littleboyblue · 19/06/2008 19:14

My ds eats mostly jars coz I'm a crap cook and all of our clothes come from Tesco's and Asdas.
I'd die if I spent £35 on a top for myself and more than £6 on a top for ds

razzie · 19/06/2008 19:23

pinkyp, you musn't feel bad- is your baby going to know whether he's wearing primark or prada? i don't think so.

some parents(usually mums it must be said) are so into having designer everything- one mum i know has bought a designer baby bouncer and high chair (nearly a grand for the two!!) just so they match her decor- not because they were extra padded or played nursery rhymes...

as for the food, start off with simple stuff like pasta and some veg - baby doesn't have to have cordon bleu.

we've all used jars at some point- jars are good standbys- esp the organic ones-for when you're out for the day or really pushed for time- i think even supermarkets do their own organic baby food now.

enjoy your baby and don't start to compare yourself with what others appear to have or do- there's always someone who's better - but also many who are much much worse- saw a baby drinking from a diet coke bottle the other day- holding it himself...

biscuitsmustbedunkedintea · 19/06/2008 19:58

No, you are a real mum

Felt like you this morning, when my friend said she had put her DS 1st pair of wellies in his memories box, cos they were so cute and she'd spent quite a lot on them (from Jones). My dd's 1st pair of wellies were 2nd hand off ebay...

hullygully · 19/06/2008 19:59

Are you serious?

Don't worry, most other people do the same and if they spend a fortune on baby clothes they have more money than sense!

hopefully I won't accidently post this twice, but you sound very like me at the moment - all baby's clothes are second hand or presents and actually she likes jars..more than my own hideous burnt offerings. Althought I am gwetting stupidly excitied now that she can have sandwiches, toast, pasta, rice and porridge (all the carbs) without me mashing or babifying it. God I wish I was the same woman of long ago that would NOT have found that exciting

ChukkyPig · 19/06/2008 20:23

Also the whole designer thing is just soooo last year.

With the credit crunch, being frugal is now IN!

I saw it somewhere or other. Even Kate Moss has been seen out with Netto beans. Or something.

So by being careful and buying practical clothes as and when you need them, you are actually being way more fashionable than your designer clad friends. Result!

Cryptoprocta · 19/06/2008 20:31

Before pregnancy, I has having a moan at my lecturer about how everyone else seems to have lovely things; new cars, nice new clothes every week, holidays abroad. How does everyone else manage to do that when we barely make ends meet on the average wage.

"They get it on credit", she replied. Now when I get downhearted, I cling to that. I have got some debts, but I haven't got store cards, I haven't got cars and electrical goods on credit and I'm not behind on any other payments.

I've decided that the security that not getting ridiculously into debt to keep up with other people brings feels far better. I've been in bad debt and been afraid to answer my phone or the door. It feels so much better to not live in fear of my whole financial state collapsing, and I feel better going into motherhood like that.

BalloonSlayer · 19/06/2008 21:25

You're doing better than me, PinkyP.

I borrowed Annabel Karmel's book off a friend and even went so far as to buy a butternut squash, an item which had never darkened my kitchen door before.

A fortnight later I was prodding it in the vegetable rack, hoping it would have gone off so that I would have an excuse not to have to try to cook it. But the bloody thing seemed to be indestructible.

I finally cracked and chucked it about a week after that. It still looked ok but "it can't possibly be any good for DS2 after all this time."

DS2 is my third child and I just cannot get my act together. Like bluewolf, I am relieved he is starting to eat proper food for himself. I actually had to dust the Annabel Karmel book today.

(Oh and I keep meaning to make a romantic path up the garden by putting tea lights in the baby food jars but never get around to that either)

pinkyp · 19/06/2008 21:30

thanks for your comments, i was expecting a few people to slate me for using jars.... just feeling a bit low thats all. Started when i went to tesco's this morning lo fell asleep so i had to use buggy n try and fit everything in a basket then i was going to buy him a teddy but didnt have enough money left.. he didnt even know about it, it was me! Then i cooked some apple up for lo's pudding but by the time it'd cooled he didnt want it and my freezer portion got spilt! I then made a lasenya (ragu jarred version) and run out of pasta sheets and then burnt it! Then lo burnt his hand when he grabbed my lasenya of my plate and cried all the way through eastenders n fell asleep just before i was about to bathed him! I feel like i ignored him a bit today whilst i cooked or cleaned, i dont mean to i'd never get anything done if not. We've also had pikies coming round the backs of our house too today! Not a good day!

I shouldnt compare myself to others but its hard not too. My baby has his own bedroom but because its rented it just has a cot in it and a bed and a set of draws with plain wall paper.

balloonslayer - romantic path? My empty baby food jars are invaluable in diluting the embarrassing recycling bags full of booze cans!

littleboyblue · 19/06/2008 21:41

pinkyp I ignore my ds for normally about an hour a day whilst I do some housework, that's on top of the 40mins he spends sat on his own infront of telly while I shower and dress in morning.
You're right, you'd never get anything done if you never left him for a bit.
We only have 1 bedroom so me, dp, ds and dog all sleep in there!
As long as ds is loved and warm and safe and fed and clean(ish) he doesn't need anything else.

pinkyp · 19/06/2008 21:41

lol i bought annabell karmel book - took 4 hours in the afternoon and ended up with half an ice qube tray full of stuff. (spent about 15 quid getting all the ingrediants too!) ITs not sold on ebay!

OP posts:
pinkyp · 19/06/2008 21:46

he starts of clean until he has dinner! Then he's got a food stained top! Unless its really bad i dont change him, my friend changes her sons top every time he gets a slight stain on. I'd be contantly changing my son if that was the case! Plus i have too much washing as it is.

Making baby food is fun for about 3 hours over the course of their entire childhood then is hellish. My DS1 ate more than his fair share of jars.
