To worry about life now that young people's basic skills are so poor

They're taking on responsibility for such important things and you have to check everything they do because the ways of thinking that used to be taught and hammered home just aren't any more and their concentration is shot (never mind their incentive to work hard since they often won't be able to afford to move out of home regardless).

Not their fault, the fault of the education system and wider society.

(Scotland specific, maybe England is better)

I’ve only come across 1 young person recently who lacked basic life skills and that was mainly down to their neurodiversity
Most young people I’ve employed have been great - they wouldn’t have got the job otherwise
On a personal level my DC are 30+ so quite happily managing life as we all do
I have limited experience of teenagers other than through family and friends but they don’t seem that much different to when mine were that age - apart from having to limit tech

Im 47 I can remember many an old codger giving off at me about not knowing the imperial weight system when I was 16 working my Saturday shop job, why would I? I had only ever been taught the metric system, we apparently could not do mental arithmetic becasue we used calculators etc. The generation before that thought that old codger was workshy becasue they used alot more automation at work and in the home and it goes on!
I have my own late teens/early adults who are very diligent, studying towards bachelor then master degrees, all while working part time AND extra charity work/voluntary positions. They can also cook, clean and organise themselves.
