He scuttled from the living room under the kitchen door. Got gaps everywhere in the kitchen for them to run under. Ffs 😩

Get a cat, pronto. My cat actually brings them in, sometimes dead, sometimes alive. If I can I catch them and release them.
Do you think it's a random mouse that might have sneaked in? Assuming no previous signs of mice?
You could get a humane mouse trap and bait it with peanut butter.

TheDogsMother · 14/04/2026 23:36

Get a humane trap and set it up with a bit of peanut butter in it. They will soon their way in and you can release it somewhere away from your home.

Just spotted that @WeAreNotOksuggested the same. Good luck OP.

sleepwouldbenice · 15/04/2026 00:33

Agree with the traps

however… take a look around for droppings. Start keeping doors shut . And… I am sorry but brace yourself for more

the 1st time we had mice it stopped at 3. The second time… 14. Sorry

I definitely thought that said “moose” and then reading the OP, I was going… “Is it a VERY flexible moose??”

Put down poison. Only effective way to get rid of rodents

Not true

I had this a year or so ago. Agree with the post about the humane trap with peanut butter in - but you do need to release it a long way from home or it will find it's way back (I swear, I released mine a mile away and by the time I got home the bloody thing was sat in my lounge!). The other thing you absolutely must do is get a reputable pest man in who will look around your property to find out how they are getting in and fill the holes. Not someone who is just going to lay traps. They're pointless if you don't stop their point of entry. The guy I used was here for less than an hour and filled 3 holes in with gauze. I've not had any trouble since.

ThisRightHereISwearWillEnd2Soon · 15/04/2026 00:58

Me too!

Except mine was exiting stage left swiftly followed by the cat that had just brought it in through the cat flap.

Totally on me as 30 minutes ago I walked into the kitchen to see what the noise was and found the same cat playing with possibly hopefully the same mouse and had chased them both outside. Next time I should have more confidence in the cat catching the mouse again and keep him inside.

MySpiritAnimalIsAPanda · 15/04/2026 01:09

Our cat would often bring mice in, play with them for a bit then get bored and leave the mouse running around 😡 we found if we locked the cat in a different room and opened a door to the outside the mouse would just run straight out. He’s too old for that kind of shenanigans now thankfully (so am I 🤣)

Trepidfox · 15/04/2026 01:52

Traps on order 🙏🏻 would love a cat but me and DD both allergic 😩 also in peri so went to bed with quilt protection and just woke up in a pool of sweat 🫨 I've heard chocolate for the traps so will try that and peanut butter? We live in a ground floor flat but the usual pipes etc running in to the kitchen so will have a look tomorrow for external holes. Fucking terrifying, DD yelled out mum theres a rat before I realised it was a mouse. DP also saw it in the kitchen and confirmed mouse (before it ran down the side of the dishwasher) aaagghhh I hate them (sorry mouse fans)

I would be way more accommodating to a moose, a mouse can get fucked! 😂

I don't think the shop bought poison is much cop tbh, I think if this gets worse I'll let the professionals put that down if its needed

Next door has a cat, maybe I could borrow her for a few hours a day - is that mad to ask? Me & DD are allergic but only react if we stroke a cat and don't wash hands (eyes start running and nose immediately stuffed up)

No, it isn't mad. Ours moved out when we moved our two cats in (many years ago now). They didn't even catch any but the mice just packed and left.

Growlybear83 · 15/04/2026 02:15

We had mice after our last cat died and I tried every type of humane trap and bait known to man and all the recommended deterrents like wire wool, toothpaste etc, but nothing worked. I can still remember watching a little mouse sitting on top of one of the traps and ignoring the peanut butter, and I’ll swear he was taunting me. We got a new kitten after a couple of months and by the time he was 13 weeks old he had caught about ten mice and we’ve never seen another one in the four years since.

DiscoBeat · 15/04/2026 02:35

You could get a cat, but then I've had more mice in the house since I got cats. When they kindly bring them in for me I catch them in a bucket. Make a ramp out of a long piece of wood (I duck tape it on) and smear peanut butter inside the bucket about 6 inches down. They'll fall in (put something soft in the bucket so they don't have a bumpy landing) then you can release them unharmed outside. I've had 100% success rate with this!

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 15/04/2026 13:16

I saw a mouse in the kitchen in November. My male cat just sat and watched it but my female cat tried valiantly. However it disappeared down the back of the fridge.

Tried the humane traps. Caught it. Sadly we had to repeat and repeat and repeat. 15 of them in the end. All released at least 3 miles away.

I got one of those sonic pest alarms from amazon and haven't had any more mice inside since December (although they are in the garden shed and one walked right past my boy cat again).

Unfairly (after me being kind to them) I got bitten by one releasing it and it was surprisingly painful!

I did comfort myself in the midst of our invasion by reading that mice don't live with rats so they re the lesser evil.

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 15/04/2026 13:17

Sonic pest repellent I meant to say

CraftySeal · 15/04/2026 13:43

Get a massive pack of wire wool, and stuff it in every crevice they could be getting in through. They can't chew through it. It's the only thing that worked when we had mice.

LadyVioletBridgerton · 15/04/2026 13:54

Poor you. I had them in a flat many years ago. After a while they got really bold and would just stroll across the living room really casually 🤮 🤮 🐁 🐁

I put down mousetraps in the end.

APurpleSquirrel · 15/04/2026 14:12

We had one last year - must have come in when the back door was open.
Despite putting humane traps down which did nothing - the mouse actually caught itself in the bath. Was obviously exploring & fell in (no water in at the time) & got stuck.
DH managed to get it into a box & promptly drove off with it to release it in the wild. He knew it had to be a fair distance so it didn’t return (advice is 1-2 miles) but he went 32 miles!!!
Unsurprisingly it hasn’t returned.

Do NOT put down poison op! My mum had a mouse in her house (funnily enough brought in by the cat), and my neighbour had a rat. Both put down poison, in my mums house the mouse managed to get under the floorboards in her kitchen unit and died there, the house fucking stunk. They had to rip out kitchen units to take the flooring up to get to it. In my neighbours house the rat ate the poison and then got into the walls and died. They’d only just moved in (was meant to be a fresh start for them after a few awful years) and it was recently renovated, and they didn’t have the funds to start putting holes in the walls. It was the middle of summer and the entire house stunk for about 6 weeks before the smell eventually went. She was in literal tears over it almost every day. I’d put down snap traps, I have no empathy for vermin in the house, but no poison!

BMW6 · 15/04/2026 14:31

Don't use poison - the mouse will die somewhere inaccessible and will rot. The smell will be vomit inducing. I've suffered it

Make sure there is absolutely no access to any food. Empty your toaster crumb tray every time you use it.........again, ask me how I know......

Get wire wool and pack into every space that you can put a pencil in, around pipes.

I bought some plug-in sonic repellents and haven't had mice since.

It’s indescribable isn’t it? I’ve kept snakes for many years, and on I think 2 occasions a snake has managed to convince me it’s eaten its mouse when it was still in the cage and I just hadn’t spotted it. It didn’t even take me 24 hours to realise from the smell that there’s an uneaten mouse in the house, and that’s just the very beginning bit of decomposition 🤢
