Settle an argument- downstairs loo or not…?

Please help settle an argument…

Starting on a small renovation. One person thinks that a downstairs loo is important as part of the work, there is space for it.

The other doesn’t see that it adds attraction to a property, and there’s a nice bathroom with loo at the top of the stairs…

Those who have or haven’t got one, who is reasonable?

(It would bring the total of loos in the house to two.)

Have we decided on the loo then is that settled?

Ladygardenerinderby · 13/04/2026 19:35

Team downstairs loo everytime no visitors traipsing up your stairs and no crossed legs while waiting for someone to hurry up

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 13/04/2026 19:45

Second loo definitely! No longer will you have to wait for the bathroom, no more being disturbed by someone needing a pee or worse when you are in the bath. A second loo is a marvelous thing.

We have 3. It's bloody brilliant. 2 upstairs and one in the basement. Sadly none on the ground floor. We moved here from a house with just one loo in the bathroom.

BeFastDreamer · 13/04/2026 20:01

As someone who has recently went from one toilet to three, absolutely get the second loo!!

Youcantwinthemall · 13/04/2026 20:06

One of the non negotiables for me when I last moved was a downstairs loo. I now have one and I love it!

BCBird · 13/04/2026 20:23

Defo need a downstairs loo in addition to upstairs loo.

Kpo58 · 13/04/2026 20:27

Team downstairs loo!

I don't want visitors going into personal spaces like upstairs. Also an extra toilet is great in situations where you both have food poisoning.

timeforteaandcakes · 13/04/2026 21:24

Definitely a downstairs loo

FunMustard · 13/04/2026 21:42

We spent about £3k adding a teeny tiny loo downstairs in our large 3 bed Victorian semi. Best thing we ever did.

We've still only got one bathroom, but we have three teen boys and two adults living here. It was ok when they were little, but now it's a huge relief. The mobility when older is also key, especially in our house which has three landings for only two storeys!

2
100% downstairs loo. I don't know what we would do without ours

Sorry!!! I was more interested in hearing the opinions rather than the poll, I confused myself 🤣

No problem!

Lennon80 · 14/04/2026 16:41

Definite yes to a downstairs toilet - saves guests going upstairs so you can always be untidy upstairs and not have to worry!! We have two upstairs loos and one downstairs and it’s definitely been worth it!!

Loulou4022 · 14/04/2026 16:42

2nd loo is always a bonus! There’s only the 2 of us in the house and the number of times we’ve both needed the loo at the same time! Also saves visitors traipsing upstairs.

Pelsall116 · 14/04/2026 17:57

Team downstairs loo

Oh I wish I'd had a downstaies loo when my Dd was toilet training l, and now I suffer with hip.and leg pain I'm wishing again, absolutely go for it

ThisMellowCat · 14/04/2026 18:05

I’ve not had one and had one. So much better to have one for….. people over who don’t need to tramp upstairs from the garden. Workmen… workmen and people running in the house who need to go desperately

ChinaGranOfTwo · 14/04/2026 18:05

It's a no brainer - if you have the space, why wouldn't you install a downstairs loo?

strawberrylemonade11 · 14/04/2026 18:08

I’ve lived in houses with and without downstairs loo and I would absolutely have a downstairs loo (currently live in a house with 3 toilets total) It makes life easier especially if you have guests or children

ColdWaterDipper · 14/04/2026 18:15

Absolutely yes to a downstairs loo, even in a small house. A young family will want a downstairs loo as they will at some point have potty training toddlers, and an older couple downsizing will also want a downstairs loo to save having to trek up and down stairs every time. Plus it’s great for guests not to have to go upstairs. We had an upstairs bathroom with loo and a separate downstairs loo at our last place (2 bed cottage), and we have an upstairs full bathroom with loo, downstairs shower room with loo, and still put in another separate downstairs loo when we did our renovation. It’s purely for guests and saves them going into our downstairs shower room.

Lovemeapickledgherkin · 14/04/2026 18:16

Definitely team loo. I’ve just bought a house with just the one bathroom/loo after living in a house with 3 and I’m already looking into an extension that includes downstairs loo…

cookielucylou · 14/04/2026 18:22

Might not be your target audience as we just rent but we went from a house with only 1 loo(downstairs bathroom) to a house with 1 loo actually in the house(upstairs) AND an outside loo, the outside loo gets used so much more even with the inconvenience of having to go outside.
Definetly loo downstairs needed.

envbeckyc · 14/04/2026 18:29

Definitely get a downstairs loo!

Perfect for young children, and elderly relatives, even if you don’t plan to use it much yourself.

Once you have one, you will never know how you coped without one!

Helpwithabuildingissue · 14/04/2026 18:31

If you have the room and are already renovating so it’s an add on in terms of cost & time/efforts I would say it’s a no brainer- you will get almost all of that money back when you come to sell in actual sale price or in terms of the wider catchment of buyers who absolutely wouldn’t consider a 3 bedroom property without a downstairs toilet.

bobdylannumber1 · 14/04/2026 18:33

You definitely need a downstairs loo.

TheTruthWillSetYouFreeMaybe · 14/04/2026 19:00

We’ve just moved from house with no downstairs loo. Renovated new house - a downstairs loo was top of the list. (I have a medical condition and having to panic in case I couldn’t make it upstairs in time was too much)
