For women... not men. Aibu to ask? I know it's a bit how long is a piece of string but just interested... my friends and I had wildly different views! Thanks for sharing and why if you can

Wow, these responses are insane. I’d be impressed with anything over £100k

I don’t think 100k salary would afford you to have a nice house, private school for a couple of kids and money left for holidays and I would expect a high flying salary to be able to cover that

Nomura · 12/04/2026 20:48

I don't think i agree with deciding on what's a high salary along the gender lines.I think depending on what the individual does that is what should be the determining factor, so the question should be, 'what constitutes a high flying salary?' period.

@childoftkty that's eye watering 😅

It’s crazy!! A NQ lawyer friend of DD’s is on £180k at 25. Mad amount of money

missmollygreen · 12/04/2026 20:47

If you struggle on 200k then an extra 60k wont help. The problem is not the money

Oh 100%, the problem is losing so much in a divorce and having a large mortgage alone 😁

however, I know my finances and I know an extra £60k would help so wind your neck in

MayaPinion · 12/04/2026 20:49

Twenty gajillion pounds making fish lips out of macramé.

Probably mad hours too.

notcomfortable · 12/04/2026 20:50

I earn 32k
I'm on the highest salary for my level of work. The person above me earns about 45k.
Position above hers is about 53k so its really not much at all.
Some of these numbers are crazy, I'd feel like I won the lottery with that type of money 😂

lovealieinortwo · 12/04/2026 20:50

I earn nearly that much but do feel like I struggle. However I think an extra £60k would provide a good amount more per month to relax

Wouldnt you lose a lot of that extra 60k in tax though?

I do think what you earn & if you struggle or not on a higher salary can depend a lot on what age you got on the ladder and how much family help you had. Lots of high earners have a lot of family help which makes a big difference.

Catlady007007 · 12/04/2026 20:51

I wouldn’t think anyone in the public sector unless in government, would be on huge salaries. They are all publicly available to view.

Feteaccompli · 12/04/2026 20:51

£500k+ e.g. C-Suite, equity partner, top performing trader or banker. High flying in public sector would be less, maybe £200k+?

TeenLifeMum · 12/04/2026 20:47

In my world high flying would be £100k and above. £250k would be “really high flying”. Not sure I’d want the level of responsibility that comes with just kind of pay though and lots of mnetters on £100k seem to struggle to make ends meet whereas I’m fairly comfortable on £60k 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well I pay 30k a year on nursery fees and need to earn 60k pretty much after tax, ni, student loan, pension to be able to cover that so a salary of a little over 100k doesn’t particularly leave me in a state of luxury

They will have to work really hard for that money. DH works for a MC law firm and it can be pretty brutal.

Edited

Yes but I know how much extra I’d take home and that would make a difference on a monthly basis

lovealieinortwo · 12/04/2026 20:53

I could always do with more money!

Hayley1256 · 12/04/2026 20:54

Peak in my career would be 350k plus profit share and bonuses

JacquesHarlow · 12/04/2026 20:55

Itsmetheflamingo · 12/04/2026 20:42

Does it matter? Presumably you wouldn’t suggest some who earns the lower end you mention, £500k is not “high flying” no matter what they do?

I was giving a banding and indicator, not passing judgement @Itsmetheflamingo

Clearly all the salaries I mentioned were high flying. 🙄

Yep. Poor girl gets so little sleep or time off I am amazed that she hasn’t burnt out yet - the pressure is immense. It’s a huge salary but she definitely earns it.

So why the concern with knowing WHAT CAREER op is talking about?

Oh no, I totally agree! She’s an absolute star and works her arse off, for want of a politer term. It’s just such an astronomical figure for someone so young/newly qualified.

I don't think of the term high flying in terms of salary but more in terms of potential to achieve big things eg 'she's a high flier' to indicate that she was ambitious.

CurdinHenry · 12/04/2026 20:53

Not really . The point is men have always earned more than women and the gender pay gap is very real although that's now slowly closing. Traditionally only very few women earn these sorts of salaries so I'm interested in what women earn

The measure of high flying is not different.
